Turtle and Shark (Laumei ma Malie in Samoan) is a place with association to an important legend in the culture of Samoa. It is located on the southern shore of Tutuila, the largest island of American Samoa, a short way south of the village of Vaitogi. The feature known as Turtle and Shark is a U-shaped cove, set between Vaitogi Beach to the north and a basalt cliff to the south. The cove is about 72 metres (236 ft) measured from east to west and 78.5 metres (258 ft) measured from north to south. The topography of the cove is such that it is frequently subjected to high-energy wave action, with spray thrown high into the air. The cove is believed by the Samoan populace to be the location of the climactic scene of the Turtle and Shark legend, one of the island's best-known and popular tales.
The earliest documented form of the Turtle and Shark legend was published in 1884 by a missionary:

A story is told of a woman and her child, who in a time of great scarcity were neglected by the family. One day they cooked some wild yams, but never offered her a share. She was vexed, asked the child to follow her, and when they reached a precipice on the rocky coast, seized the child and jumped over. It is said they were changed into turtles, and afterwards came in that form at the call of the people of the village.

By the early 20th century, the tale had been altered to involve a ritual for avoiding famine, and had become strongly attached to the cove at Vaitogi. The village was described by anthropologist Margaret Mead as the site of the famous legend.

The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

POLYNESIAN Cultural Center.
Samoans tell the story of an old blind woman, named Fonueau, of Salega, Savaii (Western Samoa). She had one child, a dear girl named Salofa.

One year villages near her home suffered the effects of a great famine. Because of her blindness Fonueau was not able to find food. After many days of intense hunger, she and her daughter smelled the wonderful aroma of soi as it baked in the ground ovens of the village. Foneau and Salofa waited for food to be brought by villagers, but it never arrived.

The woman and her daughter were so desperate, they decided to cast their fate upon the sea. The mother took her child by the hand and together they jumped off the cliff into the surf below.

As they swam to the surface, their bodies transformed. One became a turtle and the other a shark. They swam away from the villagers who did not care for them. When they arrived in Vaitogi, a village in American Samoa, they resumed their human forms. They were welcomed with food and clothing by Chief Letuli and his people.

The two women were so appreciative of the chief’s tender care that they vowed to return to the ocean to live just beyond the cliffs, returning when called upon to dance and entertain the villagers. They left a beautiful song with the Samoans that could be used when the shark or turtle were needed. Today, when villagers gather along the shore of that legendary site and sing the sweet melody, it is said that a turtle and a shark appear.

American Samoa 2023, our family picnic at TURTLE & SHARK beach

Our kids wanted to go to the beach so we went looking for a place nearby. We lost our way driving Westwards so we turned back and stopped at this spot at low tide. Turtle and Shark beach is a legendary place in Samoan culture.

American Samoa National Park: Tropical Paradise without Tourists

National Park of the American Samoa is a unique National Park. It's a tropical paradise with very few tourists, beautiful tropical scenery, pristine beaches, great coral reef, dramatic mountains, and great culture. It's the only national park south of the equator.

The National Park is just one of the attractions at American Samoa. To visit National Park of the American Samoa is to visit American Samoa. This park has very few visitors because it's so far away. Between that and the vibrant Samoan culture, it is authentic and down to earth, which makes it a very enjoyable visit.

Samoa - Swimming with Turtles

SWIMMING WITH TURTLES IS LOCATED IN THE VILLAGE OF SATO’ALEPAI on Savai'i Island. Sadly it was a very small lagoon where they are kept and would have been better to have seen them in the ocean.

Samoa Highlights - Giant Sea Turtles near Namua Island, Samoa (off Upolu)

We saw a few Giant Sea Turtles in their natural environment while traveling between Upolu, Samoa and Namua island, and managed to capture this one on video on the way back. I used a long monopod and GoPro near the surface of the water so as to keep a fair distance.

Snorkelling near the island is fun and fairly safe for kids who swim well. You should see a few large coral and many small fish. There was minimal current inside the reef when we were there. Our 5 year old wore a floatation vest (we supplied), while my 7 year old was fine (though always close to an adult).

Tip: go at low tide. We were told that the chances of swimming with Turtles is greater at low tide.

Staff on boat and island are friendly and very helpful. The island has basic facilities such as toilets, a few fale (some with mattress), and you can buy drinking coconuts. I think everything else is byo (e.g. Snorkelling equipment) - please correct me if I'm wrong. Some people were staying the night on the Island (not sure of cost).

Costs:
- Return Boat and fale on island: 40 tala per adult, 20 tala per child, and our 5 year old was free
- Car parking: 10 tala
- Coconuts: 2 tala each

I hear that all money raised goes to the village who also maintain the area.

Swimming With Turtles - Savai'i Samoa South Pacific

Swimming With Turtles - Savai'i Samoa South Pacific. It only costs around 5 tala (about 2 american dollars) to go swimming with the turtles. Note, this is a rehabilitation area for injured turtles that are brought in by fisherman. They spend some time here before they are released back into the wild. This was a great experience! Web:
