Rory set to on the theme of data and was unstoppable. It was a scintillating, coruscating criticism of the mis-use of data across agencies, business, and society.



Counter-intuitive instincts may be right and people with spreadsheets are wrong. We give too much power to people who have data to win arguments and we are the poorer for it. In business culture now the person with the numbers, however stupid, will hold sway. You have to speak ‘number’ to get into power and numbers encourage unwarranted confidence in those who marshall them in argument.

Creative North Presents: An Interview with Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland is the Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy UK, a Spectator columnist, a world-renowned speaker, an author, and a whole lot else besides. He’s also been on Radio 4, chaired judging panel at Cannes, and lived in Napoleon III’s attic.

At Creative North 2020, Rory would’ve started talking about whatever took his fancy, and kept on going until he was ushered protesting from the stage. We’ve tried to recreate that here. So this is just a small slice of what he might have said…

Rory Sutherland is Vice Chairman of The Ogilvy Group and the author of Alchemy - The Surprising Power of Ideas that Don't Make Sense and, more recently, Transport for Humans. He founded the Behavioral Science Practice at Ogilvy. He is also a columnist for Management Today, Insight, and The Spectator.

He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behavior. In his writings and his professional life, he is a prominent and persistent advocate for the use of behavioral science in defining and solving the more persistent problems which beset both businesses and governments - and above all consumers.

He believes that the failure to account for psychological and anthropological factors is often the single leading cause of business and policy failure - and also that the presence of the narrowly rational actor in economics is a significant obstacle to the use of creativity in problem-solving. Until you define the problem imaginatively, you will solve it creatively.

Before founding Ogilvy’s Behavioral Practice, Rory was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988. He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global.
Rory is married to a vicar and has twin daughters. He lives in the former home of Napoleon III - unfortunately in the attic. He is a trustee of the Benjamin Franklin House in London and a Patron of Rochester Cathedral.
