Vatican City was by far my #1 Thing To-Do in Rome! The area is huge, so much to see and experience. The Dome (Cupola) is a must see, while not widely known compared to the actual St. Peter Basilica or Vatican Museum.

Cupola di San Pietro, scale interne e panorama ???? Info sulla cupola di San Pietro a Roma (Vaticano)
La cupola di San Pietro, scale interne o ascensore? Come salire? E' difficile?
Se anche tu hai in mente di andare a vedere San Pietro e hai letto che si può salire sulla grande cupola tramite scale o ascensore e godere della superba vista di Roma, ecco tutte le info che cercavi!
Se non soffri di vertigini e degli spazi stretti, salire sulla cupola di San Pietro in Vaticano è un'esperienza da fare assolutamente!
Iniziamo con le informazioni!
Per salire sulla cupola di San Pietro si deve pagare un biglietto:
- 10€ con ascensore + 320 gradini
- oppure 8€ solo a piedi, con un totale di 551 gradini
Vista la poca differenza, consiglio vivamente l'opzione con l'ascensore, anche perché la parte della scala stretta è l'ultima, che non salti se usi l'ascensore.
Infatti per salire in cima alla cupola di San Pietro ci sono delle scale interne che nella parte finale sono particolarmente strette e, se aggiungiamo il loro andamento circolare, non sono particolarmente comode, potendo dare senso di claustrofobia (oltre alla stanchezza).
Una volta dentro la zona della Basilica di San Pietro, è ben indicato l'ingresso alla biglietteria per la cupola di San Pietro (ingresso a destra): è possibile anche pagare con carta di credito/debito e di solito non c'è una grande fila.
Tra biglietto, salita alla cupola e discesa, considera circa 30-40 minuti

If you are in the Vatican and you want to visit St Peter's Basilica, don't miss the opportunity to climb the dome. To reach the top of St Peter's Cupola, you have 2 different options - to climb the 551 stairs or to take the lift and walk the remaining 320 stairs. The reward on reaching the top is worth it! You have a 360 degree view of the Vatican and the city of Rome at your feet. Be prepared because there is no return once you start the climb and it could be quite challenging for some people. If you feel fit enough to take the challenge, you will remember this unique experience. Another benefit is that the stairs leading down take you directly into the interior of St Peter's Basilica. On your way up to the top, don't miss out on the view from the gallery. You can peer down into the nave of St Peter's and the walls up here are lined with beautiful and intricate mosaics.

Climbing St. Peter's Basilica's Dome, Rome
The dome of St. Peter's rises to a total height of 136.57 metres (448.1 ft) from the floor of the basilica to the top of the external cross. It is the tallest dome in the world. Its internal diameter is 41.47 metres (136.1 ft), slightly smaller than two of the three other huge domes that preceded it, those of the Pantheon of Ancient Rome, 43.3 metres (142 ft), and Florence Cathedral of the Early Renaissance, 44 metres (144 ft). It has a greater diameter by approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) than Constantinople's Hagia Sophia church, completed in 537. It was to the domes of the Pantheon and Florence duomo that the architects of St. Peter's looked for solutions as to how to go about building what was conceived, from the outset, as the greatest dome of Christendom.
