AGRA FORT: HOME OF THE MUGHAL EMPERORS! (4K)

Please join me for a tour of the impressive Agra Fort in Agra, India, another must-see in Agra in addition to the Taj Mahal, which you can see from Agra Fort. Agra Fort, which is also known as the Red Fort, was the main home of the Mughal Emperors until 1638 when the capital shifted from Agra to Delhi. It was home to Akbar the Great, who built much of the fort in 1573; his son Jahangir; and Jahangir's son Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, but who was imprisoned here by his own son. In a cruel irony, Shah Jahan could only see the Taj Mahal from his room but could never again visit his own masterpiece. Agra Fort is made of red sandstone but much of it was rebuilt by Shah Jahan in white marble. Some of the impressive buildings inside Agar Fort include Jahangir Palace, Musamman Burj, Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), and Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque).

Agra Fort is a popular historical fort in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Agra Fort was known to be the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638, after which the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. Before the Britishers captured this fort, the last Indian rulers who occupied it were the Marathas. In the year 1983, the Agra fort was got the tag of a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located at about 2 km northwest of its more well known sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more appropriately described as a walled city.

Agra Fort had been built and used majorly by the early mughal rulers including Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. The Fort stands tall on an ancient site and was known as Badalgarh. It was known to be captured by Ghaznavi for some time but later in the 15th century A.D. the Chauhan Rajputs captured it. Soon after, Agra got the status of capital soon after Sikandar Lodi (A.D. 1487-1517) shifted his capital from Delhi and built a few buildings in the existing Fort of Agra. After the first battle of Panipat (A.D. 1526) Mughals occupied the fort and ruled from it. Then Humayun was crowned in the fort in A.D. 1530. The Fort actually got its present appearance during Akbar’s reign (A.D. 1556-1605).

Agra Fort Architecture: The 380,000 m2 (94-acre) fort has a semicircular plan, its chord actually lies parallel to the Yamuna river and its walls are known to be 70 ft high. Double ramparts have massive circular bastions at certain intervals, with battlements, embrasures, machicolations as well as string courses. 4 gates were provided on all the sides, one was the Khizri gate which opened on to the river. Two of the gates of the Fort are notable: the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate is popularly known as the Amar Singh Gate, for Amar Singh Rathore.

The Agra Fort is known to be a historical fort in Agra,UP and also called Agra's Red Fort. Mughal emperor Humayun was known to be crowned at this historic fort. It was later renovated by the great Mughal emperor Akbar from the year 1565 till 1573. It used to serve as the main residence of the Mughal rulers until the year 1638, when the mughal capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. It was also called Lal-Qila or Qila-i-Akbari. Before it was captured by British, the last Indian rulers who could occupy it were the Marathas. In the year 1983, the Agra fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its importance in the Mughal Era. It is located at about 2.5 km northwest of world famous monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be described more accurately as a walled city. It was known to be renovated later by Shah Jahan.

Like the remaining Agra, Agra Fort prior's history before Mahmud Ghaznavi's invasion is quite unclear. However, it is said that in 15th century, the Chauhan Rajputs occupied it. After that, Agra became the capital of Sikandar Lodi (AD 1487–1517) when he shifted his capital from Delhi to Agra and constructed a lot of buildings in the already existing fort at Agra. After the Panipat's first battle (AD 1526) Mughals captured Agra fort and ruled from this place. In the year 1530, Humayun was crowned in it. The Agra fort was got its present appearance during the reign of Akbar (AD 1556–1605). Later this fort was known to be under the rule of Jats of Bharatpur for almost 13 years.

This 94-acre fort has a semicircular plan, its chord actually lies parallel to Yamuna river and its walls are known to be seventy feet high. Double ramparts are known to have massive circular bastions at intervals, with battlements, embrasures, machicolations as well as string courses. There are 4 gates that were provided on its four sides, one is known as Khizri gate that opens on to the river. Two of the fort's most important gates are: the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate is also known as the Amar Singh Gate, named after Shah Jahan's commander Amar Singh Rathore.

Delhi Gate that faces the city on the fort's western, is considered to be the grandest of the four gates and is known to be a masterpiece of Akbar's time. It was built in the year 1568 for enhancing security as well as it was the king's formal gate, and this is why it includes features related to both. It is embellished and made with intricate inlay work in white marble. In those times, a wooden drawbridge was used to cross the moat and for reaching the gate from the mainland; inside, an inner gateway known as Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate) – which was guarded by two life-sized stone elephants with their riders that added another layer of security.

Taj Mahal interior & Beautiful inside and outside Views - Gingerline Media

The famous Taj Mahal in Agra, India is one of the wonders of the world. Have you ever seen an inside tour? We also show you rare footage of Inside the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658), to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. Described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as the tear-drop on the cheek of time, it is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts 7–8 million visitors a year.

Inside the Taj Mahal, the cenotaphs honoring Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are enclosed in an eight-sided chamber ornamented with pietra dura (an inlay with semi-precious stones) and a marble lattice screen. But the gorgeous monuments are just for show: The real sarcophagi are in a quiet room below, at garden level.

Agra Fort, one of the finest example of Mughal architecture in India

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. The fort is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its much more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city.

Agra Fort built by Akbar in Red Sandstone when he was through with the consolidation of his power after accession to power in 1654, Agra Fort worked both as a military strategic point as well as the royal residence.

Ever since Babur defeated and killed Ibrahin Lodi at Panipat in 1526, Agra played an important center of Mughal Empire it was in a ruined condition and Akbar decided to make it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558 Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 1,444,000 builders worked on it for eight years, completing it in 1573.

At the end of his life, his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort, a punishment that might not seem so harsh, considering the luxury of the fort, imprisoned Shah Jahan. It is rumored that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with an excellent view of the Taj Mahal.

The fort contains splendid palaces both in red sandstone and white marble built by two generations of prolific builders Akbar and later Jehangir and Shahjahan. Of the nearly 500 Akbari buildings built in the Bengal and Gujarati traditions only a few have survived, arrayed in a band on the riverfront.

History of Agra Fort, India

History of Agra Fort:
Agra Fort (sometimes called the Red Fort), was commissioned by the conquering Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great in 1565, and is another of Agra's World Heritage Sites. A stone tablet at the gate of the Fort states that it had been built before 1000 but was later renovated by Akbar. The red sandstone fort was converted into a palace during Shāh Jahān's time, and reworked extensively with marble and pietra dura inlay. Notable buildings in the fort include the Pearl Mosque or Motī Masjid, the Dīwān-e-'Ām and Dīwān-e-Khās (halls of public and private audience), Jahāngīr's Palace, Khās Mahal, Shīsh Mahal (mirrored palace), and the Musamman Burj.
It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty till 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. The Agra fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.
Realising the importance of its central situation, Akbar made it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558. His historian, Abul Fazl, recorded that this was a brick fort known as 'Badalgarh'. It was in a ruined condition and Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone from Barauli area Dhaulpur district, in Rajasthan. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 4,000 builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in 1573.
It was only during the reign of Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, that the site took on its current state. Shah Jahan built the beautiful Taj Mahal in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan tended to have buildings made from white marble. He destroyed some of the earlier buildings inside the fort to make his own.
At the end of his life, Shah Jahan was deposed and restrained by his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort. It is rumoured that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with a view of the Taj Mahal.
The 380,000-square-metre (94-acre) fort has a semicircular plan, its chord lies parallel to the river and its walls are seventy feet high. Double ramparts have massive circular bastions at intervals, with battlements, embrasures, machicolations and string courses. Four gates were provided on its four sides, one Khizri gate opening on to the river.
Two of the fort's gates are notable: the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate is also popularly also known as the Amar Singh Gate, for Amar Singh Rathore.
Because the Indian military (the Parachute Brigade in particular) is still using the northern portion of the Agra Fort, the Delhi Gate cannot be used by the public. Tourists enter via the Amar Singh Gate.
The fort is a typical example of Mughal architecture, effectively showing how the North Indian style of fort construction differed from that of the South. In the South, the majority of forts were built on the seabed like the one at Bekal in Kerala.

A presentation by Mahakavi Mirza.

Agra Fort: The main residence of Mughal emperors until the year 1638

Agra Fort was built in the year 1573 under the reign of Akbar – one of the greatest Mughal Emperors. It took more than 4000 workers and eight years of hardship to complete the fort. Knowing the significance of its location, Akbar built the fort to make it the main residence of the Mughals. The fort remained as the main residence of the emperors belonging to the Mughal dynasty until the year 1638. The fort houses numerous impressive structures like the Jahangir Mahal, Khas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khass, Diwan-i-Am, Machchhi Bhawan and Moti Masjid. In 1638, the capital of the Mughal dynasty was moved from Agra to Delhi, causing the Agra Fort to lose its status as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. The fort is separated from its sister monument Taj Mahal by just 2.5 kilometers. Often described as the walled city, Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, the fort is a major tourist spot and attracts many tourists from all over the world.

The Red Fort: A Masterpiece of Mughal Architecture [4K]

The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is a significant fort in Delhi, India's Old Delhi region. It was once the Mughal emperors' primary residence. When Shah Jahan chose to move his capital from Agra to Delhi on May 12, 1638, he ordered the Red Fort's construction. Its original colours were red and white, and architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also built the Taj Mahal, is credited with creating it. The fort, which combines Persianate palace design with Indian traditions, is a prime example of Shah Jahan's Mughal architecture.
During Nader Shah's invasion of the Mughal Empire in 1739, the fort's artwork and valuables were stolen. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British destroyed the majority of the fort's marble buildings. The defensive walls of the fort were substantially unharmed, and it was afterwards used as a garrison.
Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, raised the national flag over the Lahori Gate on August 15, 1947. The prime minister raises the Indian tricolour flag at the fort's main entrance and delivers a speech from its ramparts that is aired nationally on August 15, which marks India's Independence Day.
The Red Fort, which is a component of the Red Fort Complex, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Agra Fort - rare aerial view of landmark Mughal era monument

Flying over Itmad-ud-Daula which is surrounded by Agra city on the bank of river Yamuna. Itmad-ud-daula has a special place in the chronicles of both history as well as architecture. This is precisely because Itmad ud Daula is the very first tomb in India that is entirely made out of Marble. This is actually a mausoleum that overlooks the River Yamuna and is a tomb of Mir Ghiyas Beg, a minister in the court of Shah Jahan. A railway bridge can be spotted from air. Agra Fort which is also known as Red Fort can also be seen.

Red Fort, Agra, UP, INDIA

Agra Fort, is a monument, UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.

The 94-acre (380,000 m2) fort has a semicircular plan, its chord lies parallel to the river and its walls are seventy feet high. Four gates were provided on its four sides, one Khizri gate opening on to the river.

Two of the fort's gates are notable: the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate is also popularly also known as the Amar Singh Gate, for Amar Singh Rathore.

The site is very important in terms of architectural history. Abul Fazal recorded that five hundred buildings in the beautiful designs of Bengal and Gujarat were built in the fort. Some of them were demolished by Shahjahan to make way for his white marble palaces. Most of the others were destroyed by the British between 1803 and 1862 for raising barracks. Hardly thirty Mughal buildings have survived on the south-eastern side, facing the river. Of these, the Delhi Gate and Akbar Gate and one palace -- Bengali Mahal -- are representative Akbari buildings.

An interesting mix of Hindu and Islamic architecture is found here. In fact, some of the Islamic decorations feature haraam (sinful) images of living creatures -- dragons, elephants and birds, instead of the usual patterns and calligraphy seen in Islamic surface decoration.

7 Wonders of India: Agra Fort

Agra Fort is one of the most important and robustly built stronghold of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings encompassing the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture. The fort, semi-circular on plan, is surrounded by a 21.4 m high fortification wall. It was re-constructed by the third Mughal emperor Akbar
on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh. Some 4,000 builders daily worked on it and it was completed in eight years. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahanand Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travellers and the highest dignitaries who participated in the making of history in India.

Red Fort, Agra - Ancient Mughal Empire

The Red Fort, at Agra, is a real eye-opener. Built over many centuries, of red sandstone and inner exquisite marble buildings, carved and inlaid with ebony and semi-precious stones. It is a monument to human ingenuity and design, attempting to give grandeur and honour to tyrannical emperors of the Mughal Empire. But, there is Good News at the end of this video!

Agra Fort, magnificent creation of the Mughals

Agra Fort a historical monuments through which we can see Yamuna river and above that the Taj Mahal.

Agra Fort, is a monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.

The present-day structure was built by the Mughals, though a fort had stood there since at least the 11th century. Agra Fort was originally a brick fort, held by the Hindu Sikarwar Rajputs. It was mentioned for the first time in 1080 AD when a Ghaznavide force captured it. Sikandar Lodi (1488--1517) was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted to Agra and lived in the fort. He governed the country from here and Agra assumed the importance of the second capital. He died in the fort at 1517 and his son, Ibrahim Lodi, held it for nine years until he was defeated and killed at Panipat in 1526. Several palaces, wells and a mosque were built by him in the fort during his period.
Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya who won Agra in 1553 and again 1556 defeating Akbar's army

After the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, Mughals captured the fort and seized a vast treasure, including the diamond later known as the Koh-i-Noor. The victorious Babur stayed in the fort in the palace of Ibrahim and built a baoli (step well) in it. The emperor Humayun was crowned here in 1530. Humayun was defeated at Bilgram in 1540 by Sher Shah. The fort remained with Suris till 1555, when Humanyun recaptured it. The Hindu king Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, also called 'Hemu', defeated Humanyun's army, led by Iskandar Khan Uzbek, and won Agra. Hemu got a huge booty from this fort and went on to capture Delhi from the Mughals. The Mughals under Akbar defeated King Hemu finally at the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556.

Realizing the importance of its central situation, Akbar made it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558. His historian, Abdul Fazal, recorded that this was a brick fort known as 'Badalgarh' . It was in a ruined condition and Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone from Barauli area in Rajasthan. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 4,000 builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in 1573.

Agra Fort - the Mughal Citadel

Agra Fort, a Mughal Citadel has imposing Mughal style of art and architecture and was constructed by the third Mughal Emperor Akbar during 1565 and 1573 on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh. It is situated on the west bank of the Jumna River, about 2km upstream from the Taj Mahal. Akbar built the fort of sandstone; his grandson Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, constructed palaces of white marble within the fort itself. Shah Jahan was imprisoned in Agra Fort following the coup of his son, Aurangzeb, and died here in 1657.

Agra - Red Fort - India's Most Important Fort

Agra is known world wide as the location for the Taj Mahal. While the Taj Mahal is of course worth every once (gram) of publicity that it gets the magnificence of the AGRA RED FORT also makes it a must -see destination. While I was disappointed in our visit to the famous RED FORT in New Delhi there was no reaction here in Agra. Come to think of it that may have been partly due to the fabulous view that is afforded the Taj Mahal from the Agra Red Fort.
Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques. - source: unesco.org
