Ranakpur Jain temple Rajasthan

Ranakpur Temples are acclaimed world-wide for their intricate and superb architectural style. These temples form one of the five major pilgrimages of the Jains. Located in village of Ranakpur near Sadri town in the Pali district of Rajasthan, Ranakpur temple lies at a distance of 95 km in the north of Udaipur city. The temple is easily accessible from the city of Udaipur as regular buses are easily available. Built in the 15th century, Ranakpur temples are known for being the largest and most important temples of the Jain cult.

The temple is said to have been built by Seth Dharna Sah (a Jain businessman) with the aid of Rana Kumbha, who ruled Mewar in the 15th century. Ranakpur got its name after the name of the Rajput Monarch and likewise the temples. The temple complex is positioned in an isolated valley on the western side of the Aravalli Range. The Jain Temples of Ranakpur are certainly creditable for their splendid architecture. This temple is wholly constructed in light colored marble and comprises a basement covering an area of 48,000 sq feet. There are more than 1400 exquisitely carved pillars that support the temple.

In the complex, there are several temples including Chaumukha temple, Parsavanath temple, Amba Mata Temple and Surya Temple. Among all of them, Chaumukha Temple is the most important and as the term Chaumukha suggests, this temple is four-faced. Chaumukha temple is dedicated to Lord Adinath, who is the first 'Tirthankara' of the Jains. The Temple structure is highly compound having four different doorways to get into the chambers. These chambers ultimately take you to the main hall where the image of Adinath is positioned.

The four faced image also symbolizes the Tirthankara's quest for the four directions and ultimately the cosmos. The image is surrounded by many small shrines and domes. One more range of cells with separate roofs encircles these shrines and domes all over again. The five spires elevate above the walls and around 20 cupolas rise from roof of the pillared hall. Each spire houses a shrine and the largest shrine is the important one that addresses the central altar. The temple ceilings are festooned with foliate scrollwork and geometric patterns.

The temple is a masterpiece of architecture and boasts of not less than four additional shrines. It has 24 pillared halls with 80 domes that are supported by 400 columns. The upper and lower parts of the domes are linked by brackets that have deities' sculptures. Above all, you would be amazed to see at a height of 45 feet engraved nymphs playing the flute in various dance postures. Each column is intricately carved and it is surprising to know that no two columns have the similar design.

Apart from this, another stunning act about these columns is that they change their color from golden to pale blue after every hour during the day. In the mandap (prayer hall), the two big bells of 108 kg each produce a harmonious sound on the movement. Chaumukha temple is formed like a Nalinigulm Vimana (heavenly aircraft) and provides this whole structure a celestial appearance. Conceivably, it is due to the intricacy of the structure that the temple took approximately 65 years to complete.

The Temple of Parsavanath is another attraction that is worth visiting. Built in the mid 15th century, the temple is renowned for its engraved windows embellished with Jain figures. Parsavanath Temple is also known as Patriyon Ka Mandir. In close proximity to this temple, you can trace two other temples dedicated to Neminath (22nd saint) and Surya Narayan (Sun God) respectively. Here, Surya Narayan Temple has innumerable wall projections with circular structure. The sight of Lord Surya driven in his chariot of seven horses is truly pleasing.

Ranakpur Temple was also nominated among the top 77 wonders, while deciding for new Seven Wonders of the World. However, number of wonders cannot be increased and some or the other would come among the top seven, still Ranakpur Temple is undoubtedly a wonder. If you are on a trip to Udaipur, don't miss this artistic temple that would become an unforgettable part of your beautiful memories.

रणकपुर जैन मंदिर में क्यूँ चमकती है आदिनाथ जी की प्रतिमाओं की आँखें? | Ranakpur Jain Temple Vlog

Ranakpur Jain temple is not only one of biggest Jain temples of India but also one of most beautiful temples in India. I started my journey to Ranakpur from Udaipur by car. My Girdhari Mama ji, Sushila Mami ji and Sakshi accompanied me in this 96 km long journey that took nearly 2 hours.

The day was very special as it was 75th anniversary of India's independence. Through deep green hilly area for last 20 km we reached at Ranakpur Jain temple at 2 o clock in after noon. I bought ticket of Rs 100 for shooting inside temple.

There are three temples in compound of Ranakpur Jain temple. Main and biggest temple is dedicated to first Jain tirthankar Adinath ji who is also known as Rishabh Dev Ji. Others to temples are dedicated to Parshavnath Ji and Neminath ji respectively.

Ranakpur Jain temple is more than 600 years old and main attraction here is Adinath temple which was made in a shape of Vimaan called Nalinigumn. Maharana Kumbha of Mewad, Dharna Shah and Depa the architect, these three are key persons behind construction of Ranakpur Jain temple.

Ranakpur Jain temple is world famous for its splendid carvings on marble pillars, arcs and sculptures. There are hundreds of well crafted statues and sculptures inside Ranakpur Jain temple. I find myself helpless as I can't describe Ranakpur Jain Temple's beauty in my words.

But I tried my best to show it for you in this Ranakpur Jain Temple vlog.

Hope you'll like this vlog too and shower your love in form of likes, comments and sharing of it.

Ranakpur, Rajasthan | Ranakpur Jain Temple | Virtual Tour of Ranakpur Jain Temple

This video is virtual video tour of Ranakpur Jain Temple. We show you glimpses of Ranakpur Jain Temple.

Ranakpur Jain temple complex in Rajasthan

One of the most significant and extensive Jain temple complexes that can be found in the country, the Ranakpur Jain Temple holds immense importance for all Jains. Spread over an area of 4,500 square yards and consisting of 29 halls, the temple is one of the most important of the five major pilgrimage centres of Jainism. The Ranakpur Temple is distinguished all across the globe for its brilliant architecture and was voted amongst the top 77 wonders of the world. The religious vibe and eye-catching design of the temple compel the pilgrims and tourists from all around the world to pay a visit and seek blessings from the Almighty.

The temple honours Adinath, who was the first Tirthankar of the present half-cycle or 'avasarpi' according to Jain cosmology. Built during the reign of the Rajput monarch Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, the temple complex consists of a total of four shrines. The construction of the temple was undertaken by Dhanna Shah, a local Jain businessman who saw a divine vision. The architectural style and stone carvings of the Ranakpur Temple are based on the ancient Mirpur Jain Temple that is located at Mirpur in Rajasthan.

The temple is designed as a 'chaumukha', which means that it has four faces. This beautiful and marvellous structure carved in stone is well known all across India for its fantastic architecture style. The unique thing about the temple is its colour-changing columns. They go from golden to pale blue after every hour that passes during the day. Moreover, each of these columns has been carved intricately without repeating any designs. Hence, no two columns in the temple have similar designs. The two large bells in the prayer hall give a harmonious sound upon their movement and are like a cheerful song to the ears of the devotees.

-------------- Place visited on this tour:

Hidden away in the forests of the Aravalli hills lies a place of magnificence in the form of this 15th century Ranakpur Jain Temple. Located nearly 90 kilometers from the city of Udaipur in the Pali district, the Ranakpur Temple in Rajasthan is gracefully positioned on the banks of the Maghai River.
Featuring intricate designs resembling a beautiful piece of embroidered cloth, this temple stands as one of the most brilliant architectural monuments in the Indian subcontinent. Furthermore, Ranakpur Temple is also the largest and most significant place of worship for Jains.

According to a Sanskrit text called Soma-Saubhagya Kavya and a copper plate inscription discovered within the temple complex, this temple dates back to the early 15th century. An architectural marvel in its own right, the Ranakpur Temple came from Dhanna Shah, a Porwal of Ghanerao, under the patronage of Rana Kumbha, the then ruler of Mewar.
Legend has it that Dhanna Shah, a prosperous merchant and prominent minister in the court of Rana Kumbha, one night dreamed of a heavenly vehicle. The next morning he awoke with a burning determination to build a temple in the form of a vehicle to give expression to his vision. Without further ado, he shared his ambition with the king and begged for his help. Delighted with the concept, the king agreed to the request, but on the condition that the structure be named after the monarch.
It was around 1394 A.D. that the merchant began his search for someone who would help him to enact this vision in stone. He finally gathered courage and sought the help of an eccentric ascetic, Deepak, who after days of meditation, came up with a sketch as flawless and divine as if it had been drawn by the gods themselves.
After about 50 years of tremendous work by thousands of craftsmen and sculptors, the Ranakpur Temple came into being.

The temple's enormous structure, built entirely of softly colored marble, sits atop a base of underground vaults, spreading over an area of some 4,500 square meters. Upon entering the temple complex, it is hard not to be enchanted by the vividness and scale of its designs.
The moment one enters the Ranakpur Temple is the very moment one begins to discover its true splendor; shafts of light filter through corridors of carved pillars, emanating their warmth into the ornate cupola cupolas above.

The Ranakpur temple complex in Rajasthan comprises 1444 intricately carved pillars, 24 pillared halls accompanied by 80 domes supported by 400 columns. The apogee of all temple architecture is the fact that no two pillars are the same here!
The temple structure has five pinnacles, each of which houses a shrine underneath, and it is under the largest pinnacle on the axis of the main entrance (Chaumukha Shrine) that the nearly 2 meter tall statue of Lord Adinath can be located.

The temple is famous for its beautiful carved idol of Parshvanatha made from a single marble slab. The idol has 1008 snake heads and several tails. Two bearers of chauri and Yaksha and yakshi, half human and half snake, stand on either side. There are two elephants purifying Parshvanatha. Can't find the end of the tails.

The entire ceiling of this temple complex is adorned with geometric designs and arabesques. However, it is the sculptures of the nymphs and celestial maidens playing musical instruments, almost 14 meters high, that really catch the eye.
After stepping out into the open courtyard, you can admire the outer covering of the Ranakpur temple complex in all its glory. Every inch of the material, flowered with delicate, luxurious carvings and the high central ceiling that accommodates the deity, seems to probe the limits of human devotion.

The symmetry and design of the Ranakpur Jain Temple seems perfect, almost! If you look carefully, you'll find a slightly crooked pillar. One might wonder about this small imperfection in a perfect example of architectural design. However, the pillar in question was deliberately built slightly crooked, to show that not everything was going to be perfect.

Ranakpur Jain Temple, Rajasthan

- Ranakpur Jain Temple is dedicated to Adinatha. It is said to be the most spectacular of the Jain temples.
