POSTOJNA CAVE Train Ride - Slovenia |4k|

Postojna Cave Train Ride, Slovenia.
Take a ride on the underground train and enjoy a 3.7-km-long journey on the world's only double-track cave railway. The wonderful Murano-glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of Postojna Cave's Dance Hall make for a fairytale atmosphere.

Postojna Cave (Slovene: Postojnska jama; German: Adelsberger Grotte; Italian: Grotte di Postumia) is a 24,340 m (79,860 ft) long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country (following the Migovec System) as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River.

In 1819, Archduke Ferdinand visited the caves, this is when the caves became officially known as a tourist destination. Čeč became the first official tourist guide for the caves when the caves were opened to the public. Electric lighting was added in 1884, preceding even Ljubljana, the capital of Carniola, of which the cave was part at the time, and further enhancing the cave system's popularity.

In 1872, cave rails were laid along with first cave train for tourists. At first, these were pushed along by the guides themselves, later at the beginning of the 20th century a gas locomotive was introduced.

During World War I, Russian prisoners of war were forced to construct a bridge across a large chasm inside the cave.

In June 2015 and May 2017, the cave administration reported that cave divers managed to explore a further underwater section of the cave leading towards Planina Cave, thus lengthening the cave system from 20,570 m (67,490 ft) to 24,340 m (79,860 ft). The cave also houses the world’s only underground post office.

Spectacular Postojna Caves (Postojnska Jama) – Slovenia Travel 4K

This subterranean world of the Postojna Caves (Postojnska Jama) has amazed visitors for over 200 years with its jaw-dropping chambers and passageways - captured on a Sony FX30. We ride a train about 1.5 KM underground to where we explore another 1.5 KM on foot, and then ride the train back out. We have been in a few caves before, but this is our best cave experience with many of jaw-dropping moments. This is the first of my two 4K travel destination videos of Slovenia. Video was captured in May 2023 on a Sony FX30 camera, S-Cinetone (with Color Phase +2 for more natural look), with a Sony E 15mm F1.4 G lens.

Hotels near Postojna Cave:

Postojna Cave (Slovene: Postojnska jama; German: Adelsberger Grotte; Italian: Grotte di Postumia) is a 24,120 m (79,130 ft) long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country (following the Migovec System) as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River.

History
The cave was first described in the 17th century by the pioneer of study of karst phenomena, Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, although graffiti inside dated to 1213 indicates a much longer history of use. In 1818, when the cave was being prepared for a visit by Francis I, the first Emperor of the Austria-Hungary, a new area of the cave was discovered accidentally by Luka Čeč, a local man in charge of lighting lamps in the cave. In the 1850s, the Austrian-Czech geographer Adolf Schmidl published the first comprehensive scientific overview of the Postojna caves and the Pivka Basin, which became a standard reference point in the study of speleology.

First tourist guide and electric lighting

Mid-century changes
During World War II, German occupying forces used the cave to store nearly 1,000 barrels of aircraft fuel, which were destroyed in April 1944 by Slovene Partisans. The fire burned for seven days, destroying a large section of the cave and blackening the entrance.

After 1945, the gas locomotive was replaced by an electric one. About 5.3 kilometres (3.3 mi) of the cave system are open to the public.

At the end of the 1990s it was one of world's most visited show caves, with nearly 1 million tourists per year.

21st-century tourism
In June 2015 the cave administration reported that cave divers managed to explore a further underwater section of the cave leading towards Planina Cave, thus lengthening the cave system from 20,570 m (67,490 ft) to 24,120 m (79,130 ft). The cave also houses the world’s only underground post office.

Natural environment
Postojna Cave was carved by the Pivka River over millions of years. There are stalagmites, stalactites, and formations called curtains or draperies that look like folded curtains.

The cave system is 24.12 kilometers (14.99 mi) long and is made up of four caves interconnected through the same underground river. However, according to speleology rules, the passages and siphons connecting the caves must be walked or swum through by man for them to be considered one whole. Connecting two of the main cave systems will make this the longest cave system in Slovenia and one of the longest in all of Europe. There remain 400 meters (1,300 ft) between the two caves, which would make the cave system between 31,000 meters (102,000 ft) and 35,000 meters (115,000 ft) long.

The caves are also home to the endemic olm, the largest troglodytic amphibian in the world. The tour through the caves includes an aquarium with some olms in it. On January 30, 2016, a female olm at the cave began to lay over 50 eggs. This rare event led to global news about Postojna Cave and the olm. From the end of May to mid-July 2016, twenty-two baby olms successfully hatched.

Welcoming the legend - new cave trains in Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave has recently modernised its fleet of cave trains – 31 years after the purchase of the old ones – and is now the proud owner of six new trains, which are in line with our sustainable vision for tourism. Despite their special technological innovations, the trains have retained their legendary appearance, which was a particular challenge when it comes to developing new trains.

More info in my article:

Postojna Cave is the most visited cave in Europe so don’t expect to be on your own there. For more than 140 years a railway has been taking visitors to the center of the earth. Driven by human power at first then in 1914 it was replaced by a gas train. The electric one in operation today was added in 1959.

To visit the cave don’t forget to bring an extra layer. Even if it is hot outside, the temperature inside the cave is constant all year long (8-10°C). It is even too cold for bats that cannot be found in this subterranean area.

Indoor concert held in “Concert Hall” several times per year where classical and jazz concerts are presented. The Proteus is blind but developed its other senses, maybe he his one of the biggest fan of this kind of events.

The little (30 cm) snakelike salamander was once believed to be the proof of the Dragons existence and the cave in Slovenia the place where the Dragon’s keep their offspring. They can live without any food for up to 10 years.

Postojna Cave | Train ride | Slovenia | DJI Osmo Pocket | 4K 30 FPS | LumaFusion | iPad 2018

As Part of my visit to beautiful Slovenia, I made a visit to a famous tourist attraction Postojna cave which is around 50 KM away from Ljubljana, The capital of Slovenia.
This video has been taken while the train inside the cave was transferring us to the main spot.

I used Osmo Pocket in 4K 30FPS mode to video this in very low light.
Then I used LumaFusion on my iPad 2018 to edit the footage and do some tweaks and color correction as well.
Since the train ride was quite noisy I muted it and used two music track instead.

Postojnska jama / Postojna cave train ride

A train ride inside if the Postojna cave - Postojna cave is the only one in the world where tourists can enter via train. It takes you 3.5 kilometers inside the cave and then you can walk for another 1.5 kilometer before being taken out of the cave by another train.
Postojna cave is the only cave in the world with double train tracks and its also the oldest cave open to visitors.

Postojna Cave - Full Tour in 4K of the Second LARGEST Cave in Slovenia

Walk tour is a great way for people to see how visiting certain places is like. In Postojna Cave there is a guided walk and train tour with a guide and all in all it is a truly unique experience and I can recommend visiting it. When you reach the cave entrance where they take your ticket, you can already feel the cold air, so it is recommended that you are dressed warmly as it is only 9 degrees Celsius inside. The train ride is quite amazing, especially since you get to ride in a karst cave and admire the perfect work or art only nature can create, during the ride. A walk through the cave is even more interesting. Words cannot describe what a master nature is. I recommend a visit at any time of the year.

Enjoy the entire walk tour, train ride and the guided tour as you would if you visited Postojna cave in person. I hope you will like the 4K video of the second largest cave in Slovenia.
