Welcome to Cyprus!
On this road trip across the south coast of Cyprus, I’m exploring Cyprus’ most amazing destinations. I’ve done the research, and chosen these must-do activities that will help you plan the perfect trip. Right! It’s time to share with you 9 of the most fantastic things to do on this beautiful island.
The awesome power of nature is everywhere in Cyprus, and my first fantastic thing to do illustrates that perfectly - Avakas Gorge. Be sure to bring some comfortable shoes - there’s a short but lovely hike on the way to the gorge.
Okay, so this is the Avakas Gorge trail that we're going to follow. It's very hot, it’s very dry, we’ve dosed up on sun cream, got tonnes of water in the bag and got about a 2-3km trek to go and find the Gorge. So yeah, let’s get walking!
Like I said, it’s a popular tourist destination, so you can expect to see some tour groups on your walk. The tourist presence doesn’t ruin the appeal. A lot has been done to protect the area. It’s prohibited to pick any plants here, and animals roam freely. You’re completely surrounded by natural beauty.
The walk to the gorge sort of serves a double purpose. The blue sky, the lush green foliage - it sets you up for the shock of finally turning that corner and seeing the walls of the gorge.
The gorge is 3km long, and the walls reach up to 30 metres high. These sheer rock walls are so tall that you’re completely protected from the sun, and the cool breeze blowing through the gorge is so nice after a warm and sticky hike.
The river is low and calm under foot - but during the winter month, the river levels rise and the small stream becomes a torrent. This sense of danger isn’t just under foot- it’s also overhead.
So there's a rock here which is wedged between the cliff faces and it looks pretty ominous! Looks like it’s about to drop.
Beware that some of the mountain roads to get here can be quite tight and get busier as the day goes on. Something to note if you’re a nervous driver.
So here’s a bonus tip for you - right next to wonderful thing to do number 3 is a fantastic restaurant called Oniro By The Sea.
Fantastic food, refreshing cocktails, sea views - Oniro has everything, and I can’t recommend enough that you make it a stop on your trip and it’s just a stone’s throw away from our next destination. In fact, you can probably see it from your table.
It’s just a 5 minute walk from the restaurant at most - the shipwreck of the Edro III.
So that the Shipwreck behind me is quite a sight and it’s been here for just under 10 years now. So apparently back in 2011 it embarked for Rhodes, one of the Greek Islands.
But never made it, because it hit a freak storm and ended up being caught up on the rocks here just off the coastline.
So apparently people fled there, they made it safe, they took out the fuel as soon as they could, so that the oceans weren’t polluted and now? It makes for a rather nice photo opportunity as you can see down there.
I couldn’t help myself - I had to get closer to the ship. The rocks are very rough in places, but I’m so glad I did - getting just that little bit closer to the shipwreck was so awe-inspiring.
The clear water and crashing waves were hypnotising. But if you want even more bang for your buck, just 200 metres from the wreck are sea caves carved into the cliffs.
A great opportunity to walk down the lunch, take some gorgeous holiday pictures, and get one last look at the shipwreck before heading to your next destination.
Coral Bay Beach is widely regarded as one of the best beaches on the island. That’s right, it only took me three Things To Do until I wanted to hit the beach, and it’s the most visited beach on Cyprus’ West Coast.
It’s easy to see why - it’s got fine, white sand, calm, clear water - everything you’d want for a day in the sun. If you’re put off by seeing so many people here, don’t worry. I found an easy solution.
So yes, Coral Beach is a fairly obvious beach to come to, you’ve got your parasols your water sports, your deckchairs.

It has so much to offer; incredible white sand beaches, a rich and complex history, some phenomenal food, and cosmopolitan cities. I was based in Protaras and traveled from here to visit all of the main parts of the Island; including the most popular destinations in Cyprus that bring tourists to the island such as Paphos, Ayia Napa, and Nicosia. If you’re planning a trip and are wondering where to go in Cyprus, this guide will help you plan the perfect itinerary to ensure you see the best of all that Cyprus has to offer. Don’t miss the full guide to traveling Cyprus!
1. Troodos Mountains
Cyprus is famous for its sun and beaches, but the Troodos Mountains are one of the coolest places to visit in Cyprus.The Troodos Mountains are spread across the center of the island with Mount Olympus being its highest peak at nearly 2,000 meters.
2. Caledonia Waterfall
In the summer, take advantage of the cooler mountain temperatures and tackle the Caledonia Waterfall trail, which is one of the most enjoyable hikes in CYPRUS.
3. Nicosia (Lefkosia)
The Cypriot capital is one of the best places to go in Cyprus. It combines a bustling street scene with some incredible history, much of it being played out in real time.
Nicosia is a divided city after the Turkish invasion in 1974.
4. Northern Nicosia (Lefkosa)
The contrast in cultures is evident as soon as you cross the border and you can spend hours exploring the cobbled streets of this fascinating part of Cyprus.
5. Larnaca
Larnaca is a city on the southeast coast of Cyprus and is the city to the east of Limassol. It’s far more local than Limassol, and much less built up. As a result, it’s a much more affordable city to visit in Cyprus. Price aside, there’s still plenty to do in this coastal city.
6. Kourion Amphitheater
Kourion is one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus and is one of the most culturally rich places to visit in Cyprus – there’s evidence of human habitation as early as 5500 BC!
It’s built along Episkopi Bay, not far from Limassol.
7. Fig Tree Bay
Fig Tree Bay is one of the most popular destinations in Cyprus for tourists and locals alike and it’s easy to see why. This stretch of white sand and crystal-clear water is located on the east coast of the island in Protaras.
8. Coral Bay
Coral Bay is one of my favorite beaches in Paphos. While most of the beaches in Paphos are rocky or pebbly, Coral Bay is sandy. Because of this, it’s very popular and gets particularly busy in the summer.
9. Akamas National Park and Blue Lagoon
The National Park is located near Paphos and covers some 230 square kilometers. Here you’ll find the stunning Lara Beach, (see below), as well as Cyprus’ second Blue Lagoon.
10. Adonis Baths
Around 12km from Paphos lies Adonis Baths, a waterfall, and a pool with ropes to jump into the lake. Swimming in the baths is supposed to preserve a woman’s beauty and strengthen a man.
11. Omodos
Nestled in the Troodos Mountains, Omodos is the epitome of a traditional Cypriot village. Imagine cobbled streets, sandstone buildings, a busy central square, and stunning views over the mountains and you’re in Omodos; one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus.
12. Cypriot Wineries and Vineyards
Cyprus is home to the world’s oldest named wine still in production – Commandaria – and so it’s no surprise that wine growing is hugely popular in Cyprus.
13. Lara Beach
Lara Beach is located within Akamas National Park and is an unspoiled slice of paradise on the Cyprus coast.
14. Waterparks
Cyprus has its share of waterparks which are some of the best places to visit in Cyprus for families. There are waterparks in Limassol, Paphos, and Ayia Napa.
