High up on the cliffs of the Adriatic’s Istrian Coast are the remains of a city wall. The wall was built in the fifteenth century in order to protect against the Turks who were attempting to reach the peninsula from the mainland. Their goal was the Venetian maritime town of Piran, the most beautiful place on the Slovenian Riviera, an enchanting mediaeval town.The charm and flair of old alleys reflect the history of this idyllic town whose origin dates back to the fifth century. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Slavs, a German Emperor, the Venetians and the Habsburgs, they all wanted this town and it prospered accordingly. For more than five centuries the town was under Venetian rule, a time when it took on the form which we see today and from the wide-ranging trade network of the Serenissima, Piran profitted well.

Piran is a popular day trip form Ljubljana and one of Top Tourist attractions of Slovenia. Piran sits on a small peninsula surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and is famous for its medieval architecture and a maze of charming windy stone streets. Piran also has some of the best beaches in Slovenia. Piran is also a birthplace of famous composer and violinist Tartini. For more than half a millennia Piran belonged to the Republic of Venice and was also a flourishing spa town in Austro-Hungarian Empire. Between the world wars it belonged to Italy and after the WWII it became part of Yugoslavia, succeeded by Slovenia. Pirano is the Italian name of this bilingual town where signs are written in both Slovenian and Italian. Piran is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town is known for its medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative seat of the Municipality of Piran and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but it was replaced by Slovene following the forced expulsion of Italians after World War II.

Half of Slovenia's colorful area is covered by forests, but the country also has another part, a tiny, but very nice coastal area on the Adriatic Sea, with such venetian style cities as Izola, Piran and Portoroz, as well as 2,800 meters high mountains and ski resorts.
The picturesque lakes Bled and Bohinj both lie in a wonderful landscape. The gem of the karstic area is the Postojna cave.
The tiny country has plenty of wild rivers suitable for rafting and healing waters. Golf, mountineering, diving, mountain biking and rock climbing are also warmly welcomed in Slovenia.
The Lippizan is well known all around the globe. All of this is completed by such medieval towns as Maribor, Skofja Loka and Ljubljana, and such romantic castles as the Predjama.

We dine on a feast of fried fish, calamari, and shrimp before walking around the tiny peninsula of Piran.

Slovenia is truly Europe's best kept secret!
When traveling to the South, the questions is Where should I stay?
In this video, I visit the locations Of Piran and Portorose telling you all of the things that you should do, and giving you as much info as possible so that you can choose which one is best for you to stay - Piran or Portorose?
We stayed in Portorose at Kempinski Palace. It was was one of my favorite stays EVER! Their breakfast buffet was the best breakfast buffet that I've ever had.
The food in general is inexpensive, and amazing! Definitely try the seafood, pastas, pizzas, and wine. They are also known for their olive oil, truffles and wine.

Piran Slovenia | Things To Do in Piran Slovenia
Piran is the most beautiful medieval town on the Slovenian coast. It is located on a headland in the southwest corner of Slovenia.
Piran was first settled during the days of the Roman empire. The town was part of the Republic of Venice from the 13th to the end of the 18th century when it was annexed to the Austrian Empire. After the First World War, the town was ceded to Italy. Piran was annexed to Yugoslavia in 1954, and became a part of independent Slovenia in 1991.
The old port town with remnants of a medieval wall is protected as a cultural and historical monument. It consists of a main square, a harbour filled with fishing boats, a jetty and a promenade lined with restaurants. Piran is surrounded by beautiful nature. Long, wide paths trace the coast from north to south and are ideal for walking or cycling.

The city is very clean, safe, and friendly to visit and explore. It's a magical page from a Fairy tale book with castles and fortresses and Kings and princess's.
I came here as part of my travels to live and experience this magnificent place while maintaining a $20/day meal budget. It wasn't difficult since there was an abundance of options to choose from. The people are very friendly and helpful, and English was not a problem here.

Istria (Slovenia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
The Slovenian-Croatian peninsula of Istria is one of Europe‘s oldest settlement areas, the Pearl Of Adria with an eventful history and much multicultural flair; a rich interface between both Mediterranean and mediaeval cultures. In Koper, Istria’s economic centre and most important harbour city, the Old Town can be entered through the last remaining twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. In its heyday the city boomed with wine, oil, salt and fish and many merchants and craftsmen from Italy settled there and the Palazzo Belgramoni Tacco became the region‘s museum. The mediaeval town of Piran is located on a narrow promontory that juts out into Piran Bay like the bow of a ship. On a cliff above the old town is the Sanct George Church, and a bell tower on the town’s fortified walls provides a splendid view of the mainland, a maze of roof tops and the main square. Travelling further south, Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and City Hall reveals much of its history. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and palaces, squares and religious buildings were constructed. In the fertile countryside lies yet another Istrian gem, Hum, the ‘smallest town in the world’ with its well-preserved gate, cobblestones and single lane. Portorož is the only real resort on the Slovenian Riviera with several hotels lining its waterfront and since the Danube Monarchy it has been a fashionable meeting place of the elite of Central Europe. Istria is a beauty with many faces, a rediscovered Adria dream and an almost forgotten paradise.
