Host Julian Davison explores one of Asia’s most modern cities, Singapore. In the last half century this small island state, situated in the heart of the tropics close to the equator, has transformed itself into a well organised, vibrant, business and banking hub servicing the Asian region. Singapore was established as a British trading post by Englishman, Sir Stanford Raffles, in the early 19th century. Raffles mapped out the city’s districts along ethnic lines, where its Raffles Hotel, Singaporepopulations of Chinese, Indians and Malays, brought in as a labour force, and Europeans , lived separately.

Although some of these districts, such as Chinatown, and Little India, still survive today, Singapore has become in the 20th and 21st centuries one of the world’s leading multi-cultural nations. Julian explores the architecture of the Anglo-Asian Chinese shop-houses in the historic Chinatown, district situated close to the Singapore River, which was the hub of trading activity. He then visits a classic Singapore black and white house, a hybrid distinct to Singapore.

Only a few dozen of these colonial houses survive. Although modelled on English Tudor houses, their design was heavily modified to take account of Singapore’s equatorial climate. Singapore is a world leader in the design of public housing projects, as many of its citizens live in tower blocks. Nowadays it is leading the world in eco-friendly high-rise.

We visit one such project where the amount of green space has been increased on the building site despite the construction of a 37-floor building. Singapore is forever transforming itself and its latest futuristic development is a massive casino, or ”integrated resort” development on its harbour foreshores, with an extraordinary skypark which sits hundreds of feet above the city.

Why the last? We had to stop our drone filming in 2020 because of Covid-19. After the end of the quarantine the air space of Paris was closed totally. The city government hasn’t approved any drone shooting since that time. So, we were one of the last team who managed to fly above Paris with official authorizations.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With 40 million Chinese people living outside China, Chinese New Year has become one of the world’s largest festivals, as immigrants take their traditions with them to new communities. The Globe Trekker team has travelled to the most spectacular celebrations to bring you the definitive guide to Chinese New Year around the world.

Chinese Dumplings by Ruocaled - Flickr CommonsTo kick of the festivities, Lavinia Tan travels to Hong Kong. She joins a family meal where food is cooked in abundance and learns about the famous Chinese dumplings. Then it’s off to the traditional parade, somewhat modernised with representatives from all different cultures and countries. Hong Kong harbour provides a stunning backdrop for a sensational fireworks display, historically undertaken to ward off evil spirits.

In Taiwan, we visit the shocking ‘Bombing of the God’ where each year a young man takes on the role of the God Han Dan and has firecrackers thrown at him as part of an ancient ritual. Continuing the firecracker theme, we see how crowds of people gather to dance among the firecrackers, armed of course with helmets, and protective clothing!

Chinese Lanterns - FlickrAnd from the frantic to the serene, on the fifteenth day of the New Year, the Lantern festival is a peaceful and visually stunning occasion when hundreds of paper lanterns are simultaneously released into the sky, soaring high above the crowds below.

In Singapore the Chingay parade provides an opportunity for the city-state to rejoice in its diversity – the parade is a celebration of racial harmonies. Then it’s onto another parade.

This time it’s out west, in London, which has had a Chinatown community since the start of the 20th Century. Despite the cold, thousands turn out to see the parade through central London.

chinatown night market new yorkTo celebrate the Year of the Dog, New Yorkers take to the streets with their favourite pooch, who hopefully is dressed for the occasion! Megan McCormick finds a canine companion to take along, and together they explore all that New York Chinatown has to offer.

Then it’s over to Justine Shapiro on the west coast of the USA, in San Francisco, America’s oldest Chinatown. After seeing the Parade, Justine is invited to the Miss Chinatown USA pageant, and rounds off the programme in true style.

Chinese New Year is a festival with deep rooted traditions, fantastic spirit, beautiful celebrations and wonderful colour, so join us as we take you on a trip to the best celebrations in the world.

Parisification - Why Paris is THE City to Watch in Urbanism (sous-titres) - A Coolville Experience

Urban designer Mikael Colville-Andersen explores the many aspects of the #urbanism modernisation of Paris - or what he calls The Rebel Metropolis. There is a constant flow of developments all aimed at #futureproofing the #city against climate change but also reversing the negative impact of decades of car-centric development.

A long period of political will has created the framework for constant change - something that is unusual in a global, urban context. But #paris inspires nonetheless. Constantly, consistently and powerfully - as this freestyle #documentary will highlight.

Mikael was not paid to visit Paris - he just likes what's going on and explores it while living there. So nice try, you dorks from #saccagedeparis.

Thanks to Mikael's friend and colleague Romain Loubiere - Urban Designer -for invaluable help in research and his camera work.

Barcelona, capital of Catalunya – an empire which once straddled the Pyrénées and ruled the trading routes of the Mediterranean – is a proud nation with its own language, customs and traditions, all forged by a fierce democratic history…

Barcelona’s history is reflected in its striking, expressionistic architecture engineered by some of the greatest builders known to man – foremost amongst them: Antoni Cornet i Gaudí. Architectural historian Julian Davison charts the liberal history of this remarkable city by exploring its buildings. And what buildings! For this was a city transformed by the merchantJulian Davison, Barcelonariches of the Middle Ages, accrued by an expansive sea trade which led to the construction of resplendent Gothic palaces and gravity-defying churches.

When Barcelona fell under the heel of its Aragonese neighbours in the ensuing centuries, it found its feet again with Spain’s conquest of the Americas.

Industrialists moneyed by their profitable trans-Atlantic trading became the new Gothic princes of yesteryear. They invested in new mansions designed by a group of ‘modernista’ architects who flew the Catalan flag during a belated 19th century renaissance – Antoni Gaudí, Domanech i Montaner and Puig i Cadalfach – who between them, produced edifices of breathtaking imagination and splendour.

As Julian points out, they paved the way to the creation of a metropolis unlike any other in the world.

A hybrid architecture, design and culture show aimed at viewers interested in buildings and aesthetics, METROPOLIS: is a 30-minute guide to the style of some of the most recognisable places in the world.

Hosted by passionate architecture and design expert Charlie Luxton, METROPOLIS LOS ANGELES charts the rise of a city founded oil, and one which grew to become one of the richest and most famous in the world. This is a place where dreams come true and anything is possible – and that includes the architecture.

Nowhere else on this planet is the motor car so important, and the buildings reflect this. During the early to middle of the 20th Century, buildings were the first to be constructed with the motor car in mind. For this reason, Charlie takes a journey along Wilshire Boulevard, from the heart of the city to the ocean, detouring to take in the city’s most important and influential buildings. From the classic Art Deco designs of the 1920s and 30s, right up to the present day, the car is king in LA.

Charlie learns that LA’s unique architectural legacy stemmed from a freedom afforded no-where else on earth. In many ways, this was a city where anything goes, and did. Here, revolutionary ideas were tried and tested with spectacular results.

Featuring contributions from the Art Deco Society to architectural experts, renowned authors and established designers, METROPOLIS Los Angeles uncovers a sweet shop of architectural classics, inspired by the wonders of the modern world.

America has always been associated with Art Deco, so Charlie goes to explore a classic, No1 Bunker Hill where he meets John Thomas from the LA Art Deco Society. Not only a building, this mighty structure is a work of art, taking inspiration from world events such as the discovery of the Pyramids and African Safaris.

LA’s modernist architecture movement started soon after, and the centre was a picturesque corner of LA called Silverlake. Here, renowned architects such as Richard Neutra learned to harness the favourable year-round weather, creating new Modernist movement.

Although architectural styles and influences changed from decade to decade, at no time did this become more dramatic than the 60s. With Hollywood firmly establishing itself as the movie capital of the world, a sense of vibrancy and humour emerged, epitomised by a style known as ‘Googie’. Taken from the name of a coffee shop frequented by stars such as James Dean, restaurants and bars, while trying to attract custom from passing motorists came up with more and more outlandish designs.

Where Neutra ended, a host of architects like Eichler continued in their quest for the perfect LA home. This meant embracing the sunshine and creating inside/outside living.

Charlie ends his journey back where he started… in downtown. LA’s newest building, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which was completed in 2003 has been the catalyst for the transformation of a once deprived area of the city and promises to herald the next great chapter of LA architecture.
