Petra (2024 ٱلْبَتْرَاء) is an ancient Nabataean City in Jordan. The name derives from Greek Πέτρα (stone in Greek). Ancient Petra was part of the Seleucid Greek Kingdom until the Roman Empire took control of the area in Jordan. The Nabataeans became vassals of the Romans. Trade and the economy progressed. The city became rich on the trade route from the East to the West of the Roman Empire. Petra would eventually be enriched with many Nabataean Greek-Roman buildings. Some highlights of the ancient city are the Royal (Urn) Tombs, the Greek-Roman (en-Nejr) Theatre, the world famous Treasury building (Al-Khazneh), the great Temple (Qasr al-Bint) and the Monastery at Ad Deir.

Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon) lies in the far south of Jordan, set on a high plateau at the western edge of the Arabian desert. Petra has to be in the top 3 world wonders and once you step foot in this jaw dropping city, you can only imagine how 30,000 Nabateans lived here in a place considered to be paradise. One of the most astonishing discoveries about Petra is the water system because Jordan is one of the most water scarce countries in the world.

Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the Rose City. Perhaps its most famous structure is 45m-high Al Khazneh, a temple with an ornate, Greek-style facade, and known as The Treasury.

Situated in present-day Jordan and hidden amidst nearly impenetrable mountains to the east of the valley connecting the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea, stands the ancient city of Petra. One of the world’s most visually stunning archaeological sites, Petra (meaning ‘the rock’ in Greek) is an abandoned necropolis of temples and tombs cut into towering cliffs of red, pink and orange sandstone.
Primarily known as a commercial and ceremonial center of the Nabataean culture during the centuries before and after the time of Christ, the region of Petra was inhabited in far greater antiquity. Archaeological excavations have revealed a rock shelter of the Upper Paleolithic period, dating to around 10,000 BC, and a Neolithic village from the 7th millennium BC. While evidence of habitation during the Chalcolithic and Bronze ages has not yet been found, the region of Petra was again occupied in the early Iron Age, around 1200 BC, by the Edomite culture of the Old Testament (Edom, meaning red, is the Biblical name for this region of the Middle East).

Valleys were filled with water, as heavy rain affected the region.
Warnings were put in place, due to the risk of being trapped.
Homes and shops were flooded, destroying produce and possessions.
Authorities are working to repair damage caused.

Zabytki Jordanii

3. Meczet Króla Abdullaha I. Zbudowany w latach 80-tych ubiegłego wieku w mieście Amman i ma w środku nie tylko miejsce do modlitwy, ale także muzeum poświęcone pamięci króla Abdullaha I.
4. Jordańskie Muzeum Archeologiczne. Można go odwiedzić w Ammanie i znaleźć w nim całe dziedzictwo kulturowe całego kraju od kilku tysiącleci.
5. Główne gorące źródła. Są skarbem narodowym i znajdują się w pobliżu Morza Martwego, w którym według Biblii kąpał się żydowski król Herod.
Przydatne informacje dla turystów
Poruszanie się między miastami jest możliwe tylko w prywatnych autobusach specjalnych. Na terenie miast funkcjonuje komunikacja miejska (autobusy, minibusy lub samochody serwisowe na 5-7 miejsc), ale bardziej uporządkowany ruch obserwuje się głównie w stolicy.
