Spectacular Postojna Caves (Postojnska Jama) – Slovenia Travel 4K

This subterranean world of the Postojna Caves (Postojnska Jama) has amazed visitors for over 200 years with its jaw-dropping chambers and passageways - captured on a Sony FX30. We ride a train about 1.5 KM underground to where we explore another 1.5 KM on foot, and then ride the train back out. We have been in a few caves before, but this is our best cave experience with many of jaw-dropping moments. This is the first of my two 4K travel destination videos of Slovenia. Video was captured in May 2023 on a Sony FX30 camera, S-Cinetone (with Color Phase +2 for more natural look), with a Sony E 15mm F1.4 G lens.

Postojna Cave, Slovenia - REAL Life Baby Dragons!

Postojna Cave, Slovenia - Home Of REAL Baby Dragons! I’m Rok and I’ve spent last 8 years travelling around Europe as a tour guide. I want to show you one of the most spectacular and best known caves in the world, Postojna cave. Located in Postojna Slovenia, it is home of a unique animal proteus known as Baby dragon. Postojna cave experience is easy and enjoyable, thanks to the first cave train for tourists in the world. I want to give you all the info you need for great Postojna cave visit.

Postojna Cave was carved by the Pivka River over millions of years. Water was slowly breaking and melting down limestone to create caves, passageways and chambers. At the same time it was depositing melted limestone through a small drops falling from the ceilings for thousands of years and it created some of the most amazing formations like stalagmites, stalactites, and curtains. Postojna is the most diverse cave in the world. It is 24 kilometres or 15 miles long and it consist of four interconnected caves. About 5.3 kilometres or 3.3 miles of the cave system is open to the public. The public part was discovered in 1818 and a year later Archduke Ferdinand visited the caves. From that moment on the caves became officially known as a tourist destination and today Postojna is the most visited cave in Europe.

About the Cave
A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors, which has already reached 34 million in 200 years.

Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world's largest karst monuments. Many books and other contributions have been written about Postojna Cave; speaking of tourist guides regarding the cave itself, almost 100 have been produced over 200 years.

Postojna Caves , Slovenia in Ultra 4k

Version en français plus bas

From a geological point of view, the cave is several million years old. The first human traces discovered in the cave date back to the Pleistocene glaciation.
The cave of Postojna is a karst network located near the town of Postojna in Slovenia about 50 km southwest of the capital Ljubljana.
The cave of Postojna is a tangle of more than 20 km of caverns and galleries (discovered until today), where in 185 years passed more than 30 million visitors2. Indeed, these are the largest caves of the Carso, as well as the most visited of Europe. In the Pivka river complex, the most famous caves are the Cave of Postumia, the Otok Grotto, the Abisso della Pivka, the Black Cave and the Cavernone della Planina.

A view of the cave.
The caverns are rich in stalagmites and stalactites which form imperceptibly, and whose formation requires thousands of years. The development of these stalagmites and stalactites is due to the influx of water containing calcium carbonate which deposits forming the concretions.
The average temperature of the cave is 10 ° C, which increases slightly in summer and decreases somewhat in winter. On the other hand, the humidity is very high and it is advisable to dress a raincoat for visits.
