PEAKS OF EUROPE | Northern Spain Travel Vlog | Picos De Europa National Park Asturias

Picos De Europa was the first National Park in Spain, known as the Peaks of Europe. This travel vlog is from Asturias in Northern Spain ...⬇ Click 'Show More' ✈ Learn to travel full-time:

As if the North of Spain couldn't get any better, we're introduced to Picos De Europa, the first National Park in Spain known in English as the Peaks of Europe. The highlight of the park could be the views, the greenery or the full blown wildlife floating around - but it's all about the glacial lakes. Theres 2 enormous glacial lakes at the peak, or there abouts, the National Park that really have to be seen to be believed.

Heading to Picos De Europa from Asturias was a pretty easy trip and a nice day of travel through the mountains. In this vlog we also travel to Gijon, a popular Spanish coastal town. The Peaks of Europe are obviously massive and take up a lot of ground, so having a car to explore and visit Gijon in the same day was vital.

This was our first time seeing the North of Spain and we loved it - it feels untapped, there's less people, less tourism and so much more to appreciate without the hustle. For a full read on what to do with 48 hours in Asturias check out our blog post:

Northern Spain Tours should be the next thing you Google, find a way to get here soon!

Thanks to Spain Tourism and Turismo Asturias for inviting us to explore the North of Spain and share how amazing it is!

Picos de Europa National Park, Spain - Roulette Travel Recap

The Picos de Europa mountains in Northern Spain, crossing the provinces of Cantabria, Asturias and Castille de Leon. With peaks rising to nearly 8,700 feet above sea level, the Picos de Europa National Park offers a serene spot to test your alpine hiking skills and return for a dinner in the warm and vibrant town of Potes. Originally established in Medieval times, Potes lies along the junction between two rivers and offers a glimpse into the history of Spain.

Both affordable and highly accessible from the Santander Regional Airport (easy sub $100 connections from Madrid), the Picos de Europa makes for the perfect destination for an off-the-beaten path adventurer.

Cantabria, Asturias & Picos de Europa Road Trip - Roulette Travel Recap

I impulsively booked a flight to Madrid when the travel bug caught a hold of me - but after contemplating four days in a city, I decided to head north. About as North as you can go in Spain - to the city of Santander. From there, I rented a car and set out on this quick but incredibly scenic journey. Places visited include Santander, Santillana Del Mar, Picos de Europa, Bulnes, Potes and more!

The Picos de Europa (Peaks of Europe, also the Picos) are a mountain range extending for about 20 km, forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. The range is situated in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León. The highest peak is Torre de Cerredo, at an elevation of 2650 m.

The range consists of three major massifs: Central (also known as Urrieles), Eastern (Ándara) and Western (also known as the Picos de Cornión). The Central and Western massifs are separated by the 1.5 kilometers deep Cares Gorge (Garganta del Cares), with the village of Caín at its head. Some of the water in the Cares river is diverted through a hydroelectric scheme, with a canal running in the northern wall of the gorge to Camarmeña. An access path next to the canal provides a spectacular walk.

Almost all of the rock in the Picos is limestone, and glacial action has contributed to create an impressive area of alpine karst.

The Picos de Europa is Spain’s very first National Park, classified as such as far back as 1918. Later on, in 2002, it was also named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The Park is acknowledged for its mighty reliefs – high peaks, broad valleys, deep canyons, gloomy caves, wild grasslands, and picturesque mountain villages. Some of the highest slopes around the massif reach more than 2,300 meters, while the highest peak in the Park is Torrecerredo – stretching 2,646 meters high into the sky.
Heavenly meadows, deep mountain forests, beech woods, oak groves, and lush heathlands – Picos de Europa has a bit to offer for both professional hikers and inexperienced mountain walkers – you just need to pick your track and follow it with all your heart.

Location and getting there
The Picos de Europa National Park stretches for about 20 km and over 64 thousand hectares. It is situated in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains, in northern Spain, and includes parts of three different autonomous communities – Asturias, Cantabria, and Castilla y León.
The Park is reachable by a private vehicle and opens for the general public all year round. It can also be accessed with the bus and taxi services in the towns around the area. On peak days like Easter, the summer season, and national bank holidays, access to some of the lakes around the Park may be regulated for environmental protection concerns. So, always check before you plan a visit, especially if it includes Covadonga or the Covadonga lakes.

Except for that, you will also walk the paths of western brown bears, wolves, wild boars, chamois, deers, mountain cats, red squirrels, and numerous different wild creatures.
The biodiversity in Picos de Europa is protected, so you will have to be extra considerate. Free camping, unauthorized fires, hunting, fishing, and bathing in the lakes is strictly prohibited.

It would be wise if you monitor the weather forecast before you go since the steep terrains and challenging hiking trails might become hazardous if fogs and hard rainfalls are predicted.
We are Yuri and Julia, the travel couple, and we love exploring Europe.

Picos de Europa | North of Spain [4K]

Today is our walk in Asturias and its peaks. Asturias is one of the northern provinces of Spain. And now we are in a beautiful place, in the center of the national park which called Picos de Europa. Picos de Europa is the mountain range Cantabrica which located in three states of Spain Asturias Leon and Cantabria.

The Picos de Europa and Costa Verde Spain

For more about the places featured in this film, see our blog:

The Picos de Europa National Park is a 647 square kilometre wonderland that straddles Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León in Northern Spain. Its proximity to the Atlantic coast, the Costa Verde, creates a temperate climate more akin to that of the British Isles. Golden sandy beaches are pounded by surf and craggy limestone cliffs cascade down into the cold, wild waters of the Bay of Biscay. Inland, forests of deciduous and coniferous trees sweep up towards the towering limestone monoliths, spires and peaks that crown the Picos de Europa National Park. In between lie rich alpine meadows misty with flowers. There are endless opportunities for day hikes and multi-day treks in this region, including the most popular, the Cares Gorge from Puente Poncebos to Caín and that from the mountain village of Bulnes to the Refugio de la Vega de Urriellu. Known as Picu Urriellu in Asturian, the 2,519 metre high Naranjo de Bulnes, a towering chimney of grey white Palaeozoic limestone which sits behind the refugio, is the symbol of the Picos de Europa National Park and is on every Spanish rock climber’s wish list. Both hikes are featured in this film.

Places to see in ( Asturias - Spain ) Picos de Europa

The Picos de Europa are a range of mountains 20 km inland from the northern coast of Spain, in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León; they are part of the Cantabrian Mountains. A widely accepted origin for the name is that they were the first sight of Europe for ships arriving from the Americas.

The range consists of three major massifs: Central (also known as Urrieles), Eastern (Ándara) and Western (also known as the Picos de Cornión). The Central and Western massifs are separated by the 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) deep Cares Gorge (Garganta del Cares), with the village of Caín at its head. The waters in the Cares mostly arise from cave resurgences.

The highest peak is Torre de Cerredo, with an altitude of 2,650 metres. Many other peaks reach altitudes of over 2,600 m. The area is popular with mountaineers, climbers and mountain walkers. There is a good network of well-established mountain refuges. The best-known climbing site is the Naranjo de Bulnes or Picu Urriellu, in the Urrieles massif which can be considered the most famous climb in Spain.

Cantabrian brown bears (Ursus arctos pyrenaicus) and wolves (Canis lupus signatus) live in the more remote regions. Rebeccos (Cantabrian chamois - Rupicapra pyrenaica parva) are fairly frequently seen (according to a 2006 Ministry of the Environment report, there were around 8,000 sightings that year); choughs and buzzards are common, various eagles and vultures are frequently seen, and there is a diverse butterfly population in the park.

Most of the region is now protected as a single Picos de Europa National Park in Cantabria, Asturias and León provinces of Spain; the Asturian part was Spain's first National Park. Access is via minor roads to each of the three massifs from the north and from the south to the aerial tramway at Fuente Dé and to Caín at the head of the Cares Canyon.

The Picos de Europa contain many of world's deepest caves, including Torca del Cerro (−1589 m), Sima de la Cornisa (−1507 m), Torca los Rebecos (−1255 m) and Pozo del Madejuno (−1252 m). Discovery of new caves and their exploration still continues.

( Asturias - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Asturias . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Asturias - Spain

Early Retirement Campervan Roadtrip- Part 1: the Picos de Europa in Spain

Much to our embarrassment, we didn’t even know of the Picos de Europa until only a couple of weeks ago. Just over an hours drive from the Santander ferry, we found ourselves in the most splendid isolation high up in the mountains. We drove by cascading rivers, deep ravines and perilous peaks.

We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our European road trip. Join us as we discover some of the best places to visit in the Picos National Park, Spain’s oldest National Park. We tackle the Ruta Del Cares, one of Spains best hikes, wild camp in stunning locations and have a healthy dose of culture visiting the Basilica de Santa Maria high in the mountains.

We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.

You will soon realise that we are complete YouTube beginners with all the challenges of creating and publishing videos ahead of us, not to mention uploading when on the road.

Green Spain self-guided cycling tour - Local Travel Agency

Pleasant cycling through the gorgeous landscapes of España Verde (Green Spain).
Spain’s green north coast makes the perfect setting for an easy cycling holiday. Over hills and almost flat country roads you cycle past the coast ranges of El Cuera and El Sueve in the shadow of the impressive snowy peaks of the Picos de Europa. Passing tiny coves and charming coastal villages, you ride from Cantabria into Asturias. Some of your routes follow sections of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela (Saint James’ Way) so you will find ruins and Romanesque chapels along the way. The cider-making capital of Villaviciosa makes a good introduction to Asturian gastronomy before sending you off to the friendly city of Gijon where good fish restaurants await you.
