Welcome to day 142 in Panga Panga, or as we call it Pago, Pago, American Samoa. Now this island I could come back to in a heartbeat.
I found it to be not only stunningly beautiful, but it kind of reminded me of what I thought Hawaii would have looked like about a hundred years ago.
It is surrounded by lush green mountains and rain forests with crystal clear water - so clear and beautiful.
Also, there is a barrier reef around most of the island as well, and when you have lots of rain, you've got rainbows and waterfalls.
The capital in Pago Pago is located about 2300 miles from New Zealand and 1600 miles south of Hawaii, about 14 degrees south of the equator and there are about 65,000 people of whom 9,000 live in Pago Pago.
The American Samoa's retain much of their traditional life called the Fa'a Samoa in which the head of the village is given much respect...

American Samoa is an unincorporated overseas territory of the U.S. in the southern Pacific Ocean. The territory shares maritime borders with Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands (New Zealand), Niue (New Zealand), and Tokelau (New Zealand).
It is the United States' only territory south of the equator, situated about 4,000 km (2,600 mi) south west of Hawaii, east of the island of Samoa (Western Samoa) and 1,200 km south of the island of Kiribati.
With an area of 199 km² American Samoa is about three-quarter the size of Malta, or slightly larger than Washington, DC.
The US territory has a population of 54,300, capital town is Pago Pago on the island of Tutuila. Spoken languages are Samoan 89% (closely related to Hawaiian and other Polynesian languages), English 4%, and Tongan.
Rainmaker Hotel in American Samoa - An old journey 2003

Mountain Rainmaker is the most famous landmark in America Samoa. Hotel Rainmaker was also very famous and it was the only international hotel from the middle of 1960 to the middle of 200.
The hotel had stopped it's business 2004 and had remained in ruins for more than 10years. In 2016, finally demolished and disappeared as a memory. This video was shot in August 2003.
The hotel building was a wooden structure and looked very old. There was a tiny duty-free shop, a convenience store, a post box, and a public telephone.

We ended up going three times while making this video, to show you the experiences of going on different days and at different times.
Saturday morning is actually rather quiet, which surprised us. The first Friday of every month is usually very busy, with food venders and entertainment, but ever since the COVID-19 restrictions, it's been a quieter affair, but still with some delicious food venders. It turns out that Friday mornings are the time to come if you're looking for fresh produce and sea food, with the Fagatogo Fish Market open only on Friday mornings.

Today we're showing you The Old Pago Pago Trail. We started at the same trailhead as the Mount Alava Trail, but instead of taking the path most taken, we opted instead for the narrow, steep, and challenging path that meets back up with the main Mount Alava Trail.
This alternate route is about 0.7 miles long (one-way) and includes ropes, natural root steps, and a beautifully visible star mound (tia seu lupe).
