Our Next Adventure (retro) - Beehive Huts in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Eswatini (Swaziland)

Highly recommend visiting Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Great balance between comfort and wilderness. Meaning, this isn't a resort first with a tourist's safari experience. This IS a game reserve.

With no predators, a definite highlight is renting a mountain bike and cycling freely around the park. It is amazing to zip down a dirt road and come face to face with a herd of wild Kudu.

Swaziland and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

I was sitting in my hotel room in Johannesburg trying to decide where I should spend the last week I had in Southern Africa. When I looked, Swaziland stuck out to me like a sore thumb. I was so close to the country, I had to go. Thus, I set off on a super quick 3 day trip into Swaziland.
I spent most of my time in Mlilwane Wildelife Sanctuary which is a fairly humble national park in the heart of Swaziland. Though it doesn't have any big animals, it does have lots of antelope including some very rare ones. The part is great because unlike other major national parks in Southern Africa, you can actually get around and do some walking, cycling, and hiking here. With no big predators, there is little risk.
Anyways, after visiting Mlilwane, I headed straight down south across the entire country in a couple hours.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (Swaziland)

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Ezulwini, Swaziland

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini's oldest protected area, owned and managed by a non-profit trust.
The sanctuary serves as a headquarters for the Big Game Parks including Mlilwane's sister reserves Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve. The Sanctuary covers 4,560 hectares in the Ezulwini Valley or Valley of Heaven. Formerly a farming and tin mining area, the area has been rehabilitated and is now Eswatini's most frequently visited reserve. Abundant wildlife grace the plains. The southern section is predominately open grassland plains with middleveld vegetation, stretching up onto Nyonyane Mountain. Tourist activities are concentrated in the southern section which can be explored by foot, horseback, mountain bikes or vehicle. The northern section includes one of the highest points in the area at Luphohlo. Only guided trails enter this part of the sanctuary. Mlilwane means Little Fire, a reference to the many fires started by lightning strikes on Mlilwane Hill.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Swaziland’s pioneer conservation area, a shining example of what is possible if passion, vision and action fuse. Once a highly profitable multi-purpose farm, and being labeled an “impossible dream”, Mlilwane was proclaimed in 1961 and is now the kingdom’s most popular eco-destination for locals and internationals alike.

The name 'Mlilwane' ('Little Fire' in siSwati) was derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane Hill but now holds significance as the little fire that ignited the conservation movement in Swaziland.

Mlilwane’s diverse habitats support a surprisingly extensive species list. Endless hours of guided or self-guided exploration within the small 4560 Ha sanctuary are possible due to the relative absence of dangerous game. The southern plains stretch to the striking Nyonyane Mountain (Execution Rock) with its exposed granite peak. Tourism is concentrated in this southern section of the park, while guided Chubeka Trails explore the northern section, as far as Luphohlo Peak.

Mlilwane’s Rest Camp offers a range of affordable accommodation with self-catering and catered options available. Alternatives within Mlilwane include Sondzela Backpackers 2 km to the south, luxurious Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge and Down Gran’s Self-Catering Cottage a short 3km to the north of Rest Camp.

All Activities depart from our Activities Centre at Reception, with detailed maps on sale. The Hippo Haunt Restaurant and Swimming pool with summerhouses provide the opportunity for true relaxation. Day Visitors are welcome to self-drive and picnic at Rest Camp, visit the restaurant or take part in activities until 18h00.

Situated between Mbabane and Manzini, with 24-hour access to the Sanctuary, guests are free to enjoy the neighbouring tourist hubs of Ezulwini and Malkerns, with their many unique attractions and craft shops.

Nyonyane Mountain is where ancient San or Bushmen people once lived and where Swazi Royal graves are situated. This gives it great historical significance. Behind these mountains, the stunning Mantenga waterfall and beautiful Usushwana Valley form the divide, before stretching up to northern section, which includes one of the highest surrounding points at Luphohlo. Tourist activities are concentrated in the southern section, with only guided trails entering the pristine mountains of the north.

Mlilwane means Little Fire, being derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane Hill. Many a colourful tale can be told about the Reilly Family, with special relevance to the early pioneer Mickey Reilly, whose family still manages and lives on the Sanctuary.

Our Next Adventure (retro) - Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary - Mountain biking & horseback

Horseback riding or hiking is ok... but, mountain biking in a wildlife sanctuary is truly incredible! Mlilwane has no predators and no fences. So, you can bike freely with the animals. It is amazing to zip through a forest, come around a corner and be confronted with a herd of wild Kudu.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Mlilwane Wild Life Sanctuary, Swaziland - Canon HD - Virtual Trip

The Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary is one of the three main animal reserves of the Kingdom of Swaziland. To recall, there are:
The Hlane for the lions
The Mkhaya for its Rhinoceros
And finally the Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary which is a rare park where you can walk freely (due to the absence of predators). We come here mainly to rest, to enjoy a typically African landscape, with its many Acacia tortilis (a kind of natural umbrella!), Its zebras and impalas that wander around, and which make this decoration a real postcard. Hypopothames and crocodiles can also be found near the largest pond.

If we did the Kruger just before, the place will not seem exceptional either, however it is a real haven.

Eswatini, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary Hike

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is the oldest protected area in eSwatini and extends into the Ezulwini Valley, also known as the Valley of Heavens.

FAHAN BEEHIVE HUTS - Fahan, Co. Kerry, Ireland (www.TravelersWithABucketList.com)

Clusters of curious cone-shaped huts speckle the side of a road that winds along Ireland’s Dingle Peninsula. These old houses, all worn and battered by time, stand as humble testaments to the island’s medieval stonemasons.

There are beehive houses, or clochán, all over County Kerry, including at the spectacular Skellig Michael. But this particular group is said to be the most remarkable in the country.

The exact age of the houses is uncertain, and different theories date them anywhere from the eighth to 12th centuries AD. It’s likely hermit monks and followers of Saint Peter once lived in them, though pagans may have also called some of the cone-shaped structures home even earlier.
At one point in history, more than 400 of these intriguing abodes dotted the hillside. Though many have vanished over time, a significant number still stand. You can walk right up to—and sometimes even into—the houses to admire the stonework that has let these clochán weather centuries of wind, rain, and curious sheep.

The builders of these beehive houses didn’t use any mortar. Instead, they meticulously stacked rings of stone one on top of the other, positioning each layer a little further inward until a snug, pointed roof was formed to cap the structure. This corbelling method is part of the reason why the huts are so difficult to date, as it doesn’t belong to any one time period and has been used in Ireland for thousands of years.
