Coffee grounds and bamboo: Colombia’s ecological innovations | WIDE

From the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, from the Amazon rainforest and the Andes mountain range, Colombia offers a variety of splendid landscapes with rich nature. But the ecological treasures of Colombia are not to be taken for granted as they deteriorate due to climate change as everywhere else on Earth.

Fred and his family encounter creative environmentalists of Colombia: a biologist using coffee grounds compost to grow mushrooms, an architect using bamboo to build furniture.

How to Make Rum That Tells the Story of Colombia in One Sip with Miguel Riascos de Castro

Our cocktail of the week the Banana Old Fashioned or Banana Republic is a yummy mix of rum and one of Colombia’s main exports - the banana.

Apart from coffee and flowers, bananas are one of Colombia’s main exports. The Riascos family used to cultivate bananas before moving into ageing fine Colombian rum. This cocktail showcases the family’s heritage in a smooth, fruity classic.

Indigenous Mexican coffee exploration

What's it about?
Mexico is one of the top producers of coffee in the world, with its array of high-quality beans. Let’s immerse ourselves in this fascinating universe.
This expedition will provide a rare look into the coffee harvesting tradition of the Nahuatl (Aztec) community. (check out our previous talk about Aztec history and culture)
We’ll visit Nahuatl homes to see the coffee harvesting process and how their cooperative — comprised of over 70,000 members — is organized.
In this experience, we will talk about and see the different stages of the coffee planting and harvesting process.
In order to have an amazing cup of coffee in front of you with outstanding unique flavors, there are many people involved and you will get to know some of them.
We will visit a coffee plantation and go through the process since the seed gets planted until is ready to roast.
You will see different types of plants, different types of processing of the harvest, how the beans get selected and stored in the mountains.
Who's telling the story?
Teyo and Angel:
Born and raised in the mountains of Puebla, descendants of the Aztecs, they are two of the most outstanding members of the coffee cooperative, they co-own and co-work a small portion of land in the mountains of Puebla, where they harvest mainly coffee, but also cinnamon, black pepper, and other crops.
Ricardo:
Ricardo started eight years ago while he was living in the mountains of Puebla with an indigenous community that produces coffee. Since then he has not surrendered in his journey of promoting one of the best products that Mexico offers to the world. He is the founder and CEO of Borola Café, one of the most emblematic specialty coffee shops in Mexico, and a judge in the national coffee competitions.

Farming Abroad - Coffee Harvest in El Salvador

Working with Luis Gutierrez and his son on La Finca de Cristiani Burkard in El Salvador, I learn how coffee is harvested at high elevations on the side of an active volcano. The bright red coffee beans are hand picked and fill heavy bags that are carried across steep terrain to the trucks that are waiting to haul them down the rough mountain dirt roads. At the washing and drying facility in the valley below, coffee is prepared one of three ways: natural, washed, and honey. I learned all about the different flavor nuances of the different varieties and preparation methods by taking part in a taste test, which happens regularly on the farm to ensure the the coffee is meeting their highest quality standards. After the beans are washed, they are moved to either raised beds or the patio, where they are continually hand stirred while they dry under the hot sun. Lastly the coffee beans are bagged and ready for export out to all parts of the world.

I can't thank Wilbur-Ellis enough for their support on this trip. Not only did they help sponsor the video, they were also my connection to this amazing coffee farm in El Salvador. Our farm here in Oregon has been loyal Wilbur-Ellis customers for many years now and we've established strong relationships at the company with people that are helping us maintain our crop health and helping manage our farm's inputs. Luis, in El Salvador, had the same nice things to say about his experience working with Wilbur-Ellis as well, which was great to hear. Wilbur-Ellis has been a great company to work with and I'm honored that they wanted to help make this video happen.

Pedro Pascal: No Good Mexican Food in NYC??

Are you sure about that? Respectfully, here's 5 spots we think are worth a try, and maybe come to the defense of the many Mexicans and Mexican-owned establishments that call NYC home. You can get tacos, chalupas, micheladas, and more, and we think they give Los Angeles a run for its money. Have you hit these places? Drop us a line in the comments.

Stories of la Molina, Colombian coffee farmers - TvAgro by Juan Gonzalo Angel

Colombia is recognized as one of the largest coffee producers in the world with its Arabica coffee species. The 2017/2018 coffee year represented a production of 13.8 million bags, translated into 6.47 billion pesos. In spite of the challenges of coffee price volatility, climatic conditions and the world's over supply of this grain, the resilience of Colombian coffee has allowed it to continue to stand out as a leader. Thanks to the Federation's effort to represent the interests and watch over the well-being of the more than 540,000 families that live from the coffee agroindustry, the coffee guild is one of the greatest references of association and institutionality in Colombia and the world. Through the work of the Departmental Committees of Coffee Growers, it is possible to execute the guild's strategy in each coffee producing department that has a coffee production of more than 2% of the total national production. The technical accompaniment through the rural extension service has made it possible to reach all the territories of the country and contribute to the construction of good productive and environmental practices. These practices are the result of the work carried out by the National Coffee Research Center (CENICAFE2 ), which has concentrated on increasing the productivity of coffee growers, betting on social, environmental and economic sustainability. This technical and productive accompaniment would be incomplete without the work of the Manuel Mejía Foundation3 , which accompanies coffee growers in processes of formation and training for their well-being.

Coffee Farm Tour in Colombia

From seed to cup! I had a chance to go on a coffee farm tour in Colombia. It's an easy day trip from Medellin, to Fredonia where some of the world's best coffee is grown. We had a chance to meet the coffee farmer, help pick coffee cherries, learn how to wash & dry the green coffee beans, learn about coffee tasting, and see the whole process of coffee before it gets to your cup! We even got to plant new coffee trees for the next harvest season. I highly recommend taking a coffee farm tour in Colombia. Read more on the blog at: chasingtravel.com
