Why nobody wanted us to visit China...???????? (FIRST TIME IN CHINA!)

Our first time in China!
We were anxious and nervous to arrive to Shanghai, China on a 144-HR visa free transit because we heard that if we have stamps from certain countries, we may get rejected and denied entry.
This exemption would allow us to stay in China within 144-hr or 6 days.
It had been our long-time dream to travel China, so we were hoping we could visit the country.
With the policy, we were only allowed to explore Shanghai.
Because of covid and western medias, many people told us not to visit China.
But China was not what we expected. China surprised us!
Is China dangerous? Is China safe? What's China really like? Check out our vlog!

Top 10 Places to Visit in Shanghai - China Travel Documentary

Shanghai is one of the most fascinating cities in China, and in this video I share my personal top 10 places to visit in this amazing city.

Few cities in the world evoke so much imagination as the largest city in China. Rich and glamorous on one corner, rough around the edges on another, Shanghai is truly one of the most fascinating places in the country. Located in the East of China, Shanghai should be high on any traveler’s list.

The video starts off on the Bund, a spectacular waterfront promenade located right in the center of the city. It provides a stunning contrast between historic colonial architecture and the awe-inspiring modern skyline of Pudong on the other side of the Huangpu river. Here, you can get some of the best views across the city. After Pudong, I take you to Nanjing street for some shopping, followed by a moment of calm in the rebuilt Jing’An Temple.

After walking through the People’s (central) park where I encounter a ‘marriage market’, we search for pockets of old Shanghai. These authentic neighborhoods are fast disappearing, as development of apartment towers and shopping malls takes over.

With enough time, it’s possible to plan a few day trips out of Shanghai. Some of my favorite ones are Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and the impressive Yangshan Port (Shanghai's main container terminal, or harbor). Back in the city, we travel to the outskirts to visit a ‘bicycle graveyard’ and visit a few trade shows. Probably not your regular 'tourist attraction', but interesting places for those interested in doing business in China. The video finishes at the former Expo site, taking you back to one of the largest events ever held in China.

*** The footage in this video was made in the years before the global pandemic. I am currently not traveling, like most people in the world. ***

MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

ONE WEEK IN BEIJING

In this one week in Beijing video, we share everything you need to know to enjoy 144 hours in Beijing. Including: how to get around Beijing, tips for visiting Beijing, planning a trip to Beijing guide, best things to see and do in Beijing, when to visit Beijing China and Beijing China travel tips.

Recommended VPN: Whilst living in China, we tried a few different VPN’s but found the most reliable to be Express VPN -

Things to do in Beijing:
Staying in a courtyard hotel:
Best places to stay in China:

The capital of China, Beijing is a fascinating city with lots to offer visitors. From amazing food, thousands of years of history and a unique culture, there are many reasons that Beijing should be on your Asia travel itinerary.

When to visit Beijing

China is a huge country so the weather in the North and South can be a big contrast throughout the year.

The best time to visit Beijing is from middle of April through to June and September to October.

The winter in Beijing can be bitterly cold, with temperatures reaching minus 15 degrees, with the pollution also running high from November to March. However, summer months are hot and busy in Beijing too.

Whilst planning your trip, you also need to avoid the Chinese national holidays - Golden Week runs during the first week of October and Chinese New Year lands around February, with a handful of long weekends throughout the year. If possible, aim to visit Beijing just after a national holiday; locals all go back to work and attractions and sites are much quieter.

How to get around Beijing

Beijing is a bustling city so the best way to get around is by using the Metro. Download the Beijing metro app to plan your trips around the city.

Also down the Didi App, this is China’s version of Uber and is easy to use. Taxis around the city are cheap but travel outside of rush hour to avoid traffic.

Things to do in Beijing

There are many things to do in Beijing so here are some of the best attractions and sites to visit:

Many people use Beijing as a base for their trip to the Great Wall of China. This iconic wall is definitely the number 1 thing to do in China and you can comfortably visit different sections of the Wall from Beijing. Book a driver and leave early to visit the wall at its quietest.

The Forbidden City is perhaps the most popular attraction in the city itself. This is a place complex and the former home of the Emperor of China from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is now home to the Palace museum and makes for a great way to spend a morning in Beijing. Head here for opening, this place gets busy quickly.

Whilst you are in Forbidden City, spend some time exploring Tiananmen Square. This square can accommodate a million people and carry a lot of history. Apart from the Forbidden City, you canals see the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the National Museum of China and the Mausoleum of Chairman Mao.

The beautiful Temple is another iconic place you should visit during your time in Beijing. This is seen as the most holy imperial temple in Beijing, with emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties using the Royal Alter for their worship.

Another must-see in Beijing is the hutongs - you can even stay in a courtyard hotel tucked away in hutongs for a unique travel experience. Either way, make sure you find some time during your week in Beijing to visit these narrow alleyways, full of tiny stores, street vendors and even the odd hidden bar.

Looking for a place to eat? Make sure you visit the food markets for some tasty local snacks but also try the famous Peking duck at one of the many restaurants in the city.

You may want to escape the crowds of Beijing and one great day trip is to visit to the city of Tianjin. This European influenced city offers an insight into modern local life in China so spend a day walking through the Italian Quarter, cruising along the river and visiting the quiet local temples.

Another fun thing to do in Beijing or in fact, anywhere in China, is a cooking class. Learn how to cook traditional Chinese dishes and visit a local market with your cooking host.

Visit the parks in the city and take in local life in China - with dancers, groups of elderly exercising together and locals playing Go: a Chinese board game played with black and white stones.

Only have a week in China? Split your time between Beijing and another one of the iconic cities. China has an excellent speed train network, meaning you can reach Xi’an, Shanghai or Chengdu in under 5 hours.

We hope you a have an amazing time in Beijing, let us know what your most excited for in the comments below.

Travel in China | One week visit 4 cities, from north to south

This April I visit Beijing, Yangzhou, Changsha and Guiyang in one week, a super busy but joyful trip. How can I manage it?

One Week in China

#China #Travel
China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers.

I was worried about coming here in China…???????????? (FIRST TIME IN HARBIN)

We are back in China!!! In this video, we arrived in the coldest city in China...Harbin.
Harbin is the number one tourist destination in China at the moment because of the Famous Harbin Ice Festival. This has been on our bucket list ever since we found out about it. So even though the Canadian travel advisory has a warning against going to China, we flew to Harbin as soon as we got the chance. We were more at ease about being in China this time since it was our third time flying to the country. BUT many of you guys expressed your concerns and worries about us coming to Harbin with just the clothes and jackets we bought from Chongqing. And your comments also made us worried, and fear that we would not survive in Harbin. But we were just so excited being in Harbin! This city has gone viral on social media, and we wanted to check it out. Check out our first day in Harbin, China.
