Nuuk, The tip, is the capital and largest city of Greenland, and the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. Nuuk has a population of 15469, making Nuuk one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population!

Founded as Godthåb by Hans Egede (The Apostle of Greenland), Nuuk is Greenland's capital and principal urban centre. As more Greenlanders become attracted to the capital's economic and cultural opportunities the pace of construction is relentless. This growth is both exciting and challenging. This short film provides some historical context as well as an overview of the sights and sounds. A particular thank you goes out to Ejvind Elsner of Atlantic Music for his hospitality and insight.
In response to the many negative comments about the comment in the film about the legacy of the missionary Hans Egede I would like to point out that this is not my personal view - it is the established Greenlandic view as expressed to visitors of the National Museum.

In 1971, Greenland's 250th anniversary was celebrated in different ways, but largely expressed a very romantic notion of Hans Egede as a father-type figure to Greenland and the country's union with Christendom. Now in 2021, Hans Egede's arrival is seen in a more nuanced way. The focus is on reconciling a complicated past with the benefit of perspective and a more thoughtful understanding of the enduring influence of Christianity on Greenlandic society and culture. This includes changing political perspectives that have in recent years shifted public expressions of the 1721 anniversary from jubilant affairs to more respectful observances.”

The major cities closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. Johns in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains almost a third of Greenlands population and its tallest building. The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian governor Claus Paarss when he relocated Hans Egedes earlier Hope Colony (Haabets Koloni) to the mainland, and was named Godthåb (Good Hope). The city officially adopted its current name in 1979, although the name Godthåb remained in use in Danish. Nuuk is the Kalaallisut word for cape (Danish: næs). It is so named because of its position at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. Exploring Nuuk, Greenland (Walking Tour in Nuuk, the Capital of Greenland) - Travel vlog
Explore with me Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, as I walk through the streets of Nuuk.
“Nuuk” is the Greenlandic word for “cape” and is named for its position at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord (otherwise known as the Nuuk Fjord) – the second largest fjord system in the world. The Narsap Sermia glacier flows directly into the fjord. Nuuk is the northernmost capital in the world if you don’t include Reykjavik. Nuuk was founded in 1728 by the missionary Hans Egede after he left his first settlement at the nearby ”Island of Hope”. The population is approximately 16800.
As I walk through the streets of Nuuk, you will see Nuuk old harbor, Nuuk Cathedral, Hans Egede statue, Nuuk water taxi station, Nuuk boardwalk, Nuuk center (Nuuk shopping mall), Nuuk Katuaq center (Nuuk cultural center), Nuuk Tupilak Travel office, Muggedalen, and many other beautiful sites.
At the end of the video, you will see a beautiful area known as Muggedalen. It gives a good view of the colorful houses of Nuuk along the seashore.

Exploring the world's smallest capital city: NUUK in GREENLAND!!!
The final stop in Greenland was to visit the capital, Nuuk, which means the headland and is located at the edge of a large peninsula at the mouth of a giant fjord system. It was founded in 1728 by the missionary Hans Egede, making it the oldest town in Greenland but also the world's smallest capital city with only 16,000 inhabitants.
The day of our visit was very cold, considering it was summer and very windy, so we tried to stay warm while seeing what we could!

Should you visit GREENLAND & Nuuk - shops, markets and culture
Hello everyone! This is the seventh video in my Iceland & Greenland series.
My adventures in Greenland, my 65th country (well, depending on how you count them), continues.
In this video, I get the chance to explore Nuuk on one of its busiest days of the year - Kids' Day. There are a lot of people out and about and I thought it was an ideal day to explore the cultural side of the capital.
I start my day with a quick bus journey around the city and talk with an interesting bus driver. Afterwards, I frequent a variety of shops, including clothing shops, the big Nuuk shopping mall, the tourist information office and local markets to name a few. I also meet some friendly local people along the way! The day ends with a Colour Run as part of the festivities - yours truly as a spectator only though!
At the end of the vlog, I also give my verdict on whether Nuuk is worth visiting after spending a few days there. I won't ruin the suspense for you, but there is a bit of a twist...

WELCOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ISOLATED PLACES - GREENLAND!
Today I arrived in one of the world's most remote villages, way out here on the rugged North Eastern shores of Greenland. It's called Ittoqqortoormiit (say that 5 times fast) and it's a fascinating place that feels like I'm on the moon!
Very few outsiders have ever visited this village because it's so remote, and I'm lucky to be one of them on board this Hurtigruten expedition!
Ittoqqortoormiit has a population of around 350 and the nearest town is thousands of kilometers away. The locals are called Inuits (the same ethnic group as Eskimos), and they survive from hunting and eating polar bears, walrus, seals, and whales.

Hi everyone! This is the sixth video in my Iceland & Greenland series.
Fishing is the lifeblood when it comes to the economy of Greenland and its importance for the island cannot be overstated.
In this vlog, I first visit the Kalaaliaraq Market in Nuuk that sells meat such as whale and seal. Afterwards, I explore Nuuk Harbour where local workers show me some of the storage facilities and warehouses in the harbour.

Welcome to one of the fastest growing capitals on Earth!
Nuuk is the bustling capital of Greenland, a microcosm of vibrant cosmopolitan energy on the west coast of the world's largest island nation. This city of 17,000 people is home to the Inuit people, an Asian indigenous group that migrated from Siberia centuries ago, settling in the far reaches of northern Russia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. Their vibrant Inuit culture is evident not only through the numerous carvings that dot the city center, but also in the uniqueness of their cuisine: narwhal, beluga, reindeer, muskox, and seal meat are all widely available for consumption.
On my first day in Greenland's bustling capital, I take a walk through its modern downtown core, replete with shops and restaurants galore that are sure to satisfy even the most finicky of travelers. In this video, I'll take you to some of the city's best eateries and sightseeing spots, from the Katuaq Cultural Center with its exquisite cafe (where I enjoy a latte and a wild hot dog made of muskox and reindeer meat, wrapped in bacon!), to the bare-bones Cafe Mamaq, to the laid-back vibes of Cafe Pascucci. With so much variety and energy in this vibrant city, you'll quickly forget that you're in the remote Arctic and wonder how this is even possible.

On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.
Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 70 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Nuuk ( is the capital of and most populous city in Greenland, an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the territory's largest cultural and economic center. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2023, it had a population of 19,604. Nuuk is considered a modernized city after the policy began in 1950.
The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony (Haabets Koloni) where he arrived in 1721. The governor Claus Paarss was part of the relocation. The new colony was placed at the Inuit settlement of Nûk and was named Godthaab (Good Hope). Nuuk is the Greenlandic word for cape and is commonly found in Greenlandic place names. It is so named because of its position at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. Its latitude, at 64°11' N, makes it the world's northernmost capital, only a few kilometres farther north than the Icelandic capital Reykjavík. When home rule was established in 1979, the authorization of place names was transferred to Greenlandic authorities, who subsequently preferred Greenlandic names over Danish ones. The name Godthåb mostly went out of use over the next two decades .
The campus of the University of Greenland, hosting Statistics Greenland and the main holdings of the Public and National Library of Greenland, are at the northern end of the district, near the road to Nuuk Airport.
Nuuk receives its electric power mainly from the renewable energy-powered Buksefjord hydroelectric power plant by way of a 132 kV powerline crossing Ameralik fjord over a distance of 5,376 m (17,638 ft), the world's longest free span.
