Things To Do & Where to Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake | White Oaks Resort Review

Things To Do & Where to Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake | White Oaks Resort Review

Heading to the Niagara region anytime soon? My recent visit to the Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls was so special - we hope you enjoy this review video as we share our recommendations of where to stay, the top things to do and where to eat if you are lucky enough to get away for 2 days and 1 night!

ACCOMMODATION
As for accommodation, White Oaks Resort and Spa was simply excellent - from the impeccable service, to the room size and cleanliness, to the concierge putting cold water bottles in our car when the valet brought it around... we could not say more positive things about this hotel! For more information, visit:

WINE TOURS
We also went on a organized winery tour and visited three different wineries in the region including Hare, Pondview and Between the Lines. The wines were excellent - and for any wine lover this experience is a real treat as each winery was so different and unique with small town charm and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE
As for the main road in Niagara on the Lake - Queen street - the charm and vibe of this special high street is truly remarkable. The countless ice-cream, fudge, and chocolate stores will leave you salivating. While the quaint tea shops, souvenir stores and other retailers really make browsing and shopping a pleasure. The vibe in the summer is also palpable as the flowers and tress are in full bloom and the dogs and horse carriages are out in abundance!

FOOD
Dinner at the award-winning Treadwell never ceases to amaze us. Their flexibility to accommodate any and every dietary requirement, while still maintaining the most delicious standard of food left us feeling full and most satisfied!

Day 2 started with a delicious breakfast at White Oaks' well-known restaurant Liv.

NIAGARA FALLS
After check out, we headed to do what every tourist does in the area - and that's see Niagara Falls! Since my sister had never seen the falls we decided to do the maid of the mist boat tour right into the falls - and we have to say , it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity! It took 60 mins from start to finish - the lines moved seamlessly and the experience is one to remember. I will for sure be bringing my kids back to do the Hornblower boat tour in the near future!

So there you have it - a whirlwind 24 hours of wine, sun, waterfalls, great food, relaxation and more.

131: Cider Barrels with a Cooper, a Maker & Thierry Lemaire

Cider Barrel Maintenance The craft of making an oak barrel is called “cooperage” and the person who applies this craft is called a “cooper”. The skills of this trade have been passed down through the centuries. The tree and the wood chosen to become a barrel has to meet specific criteria, such as having a tight grain and flavor profiles that lend the tannin qualities often sought in a cider barrel.

From the classic wide belly barrels to oval shaped vessels, the shape of wooden barrels have changed very little over time. Quality control over the wood used and the intricacies of heat, stave bending, and maintenance of cider barrels continues to evolve.

This episode 131 was recorded in Saint Catharine, Ontario during a dinner chat with Ryan Monkman of FieldBird Cider, Thierry Lemaire of Nuance Winery Supplies and Louis of Radoux, a cooperage based in Santa Rosa California and France.

All three men have extensive knowledge on barrel use with wine. As the cider market continues to grow and both the consumer’s and cidermakers interest in ciders fermented or stored in oak increases, barrel maintenance is undoubtedly a hot topic and a key market for these specialist in the art of oak barrel cooperage and fermentation.

As we enjoy a bottle of Ryan’s FieldBird cider over dinner the four of us discuss oak barrel selection and maintenance, which in short narrows down to the broader topic of Barrel Skills. Whereas the wine industry has been working with oak barrels for centuries, cidermakers particularly in the US and Canada, are only now gaining speed with cider post Prohibition.

Key topics in this chat:
Finding the right oak barrel for your cider
Barrel Maintenance:
Cleaning a barrel
Storing a barrel - wet or dry storage - burning a sulfur disk
Leaky barrels - mechanical (cooperage) or maker mismanagement? Using Wax on a barrel to stop evaporation
Buying a new barrel

【Canada】Niagara-on-the-Lake Konzelmann Estate Winery & Peller Estates Winery in Ontario

Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to some of the oldest and most established wine producing vineyards in Canada.
Bordered by Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, the climate is moderated and temperatures are generally warmer so that grapes ripen very well. An earlier spring in Niagara-on-the-Lake means the grapes have a longer growing season, resulting in ripeness at harvest and better depth of flavour in the wines.
The town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is just 1.5 hours from Toronto, and 10 mins from Niagara Falls or from the Canada-US border.

Konzelmann Estate Winery:
Konzelmann is Niagara’s only lakefront winery, located on the shores of Lake Ontario. The Winery began in the small German town of Uhlbach, near the turn of the 19th century.

Peller Estates Winery:
When Andrew Peller first arrived in Canada from Hungary in 1927, he envisioned a day when Canadians would come to appreciate premium quality wines and enjoy sharing them with family and friends.

Best Things to do in Canada's Most Haunted Town (Halloween)

Subscribe to the Channel!

Looking for something to do on Halloween 2019? Come to Niagara on the Lake and do a little ghost hunting!

Niagara on the Lake is known as Canada's Most Haunted Town! This is a great way to spend your Halloween in Wine Country where you can find ghosts everywhere! This episode will explore the best things to do in Niagara on the Lake at night as Niagara can get a bit sleepy at night but there is a lot still to do if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Niagara Falls. This will tap into the town's most haunted sites so if you're planning on a trip here you'll want to see this episode as it uncovers it's ghost adventures! Don't worry, Niagara on the Lake is not that scary!
The Ghost Walk Tour is highly recommended! The Ghost Walks are largely attended by locals as well as tourists and it's a great way to learn about the town and it's history. Highly recommend it! There were many people in attendance that do this tour annually.
There is also a ghost walk in Fort George. We did this tour on Halloween.
There were weird things that happened to everyone's camera and photos at one of the vacant haunted houses we went to visit. You'll even learn if there are any haunted houses available for sale and the history of some of the properties and stories.
A lot of the pubs in Niagara on the Lake are haunted and if you're interested in doing a pub crawl, your local bartenders will share some old and new ghost stories given the deep history of this town.
Don't miss attending the Shaw Festival Theatre! Their upcoming season for 2019 is stellar.
The play seen was A Christmas Carol - excellent performance - with Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. It was fortunate the Shaw allowed a photo of the actors as normally this is prohibited.
