NIAGARA FALLS VACATION GUIDE
In this Niagara Falls Vacation guide, we share everything you need to know before visiting the wonder of the world, including the best time to visit Niagara Falls, how to get around Niagara Falls and typical costs in Niagara Falls.
Niagara falls is where nature meets fun. Straddling the US/Canadian border, both sides offer a variety of attractions in and around the falls, ideal for families, couples and backpackers.
Best time to visit Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls can be visited all year round but to experience all the attractions in and around the falls at their best, the best time to visit Niagara Falls is from June to August.
Summer is peak season because the average high temperature is in the low 80s, you can enjoy a light breeze from the falls to keep you a little cooler but you can also dry off quickly after getting soaked in the Cave of the Winds; which we recommend doing.
Plus, there is a free Discover Niagara Shuttle which runs throughout the summer.
However, visiting in the Autumn offers a different experience, with beautiful colours in the state park as well as harvest season at the local wineries.
The main attractions close over the winter period but you can visit the falls as they freeze over if you time your trip just right.
Getting to Niagara Falls
The quickest way to get to Niagara Falls is by flying to either Toronto or Buffalo airport then take a taxi, bus or train into Niagara.
Alternatively, you can use the Greyhound bus services from New York City. These trips take 10 to 12 hours and cost $58. You could also take the train for $78, taking 9 hours. If you are taking a road trip, the drive can take approximately 6 and a half hours.
Getting around Niagara Falls
Whilst you are in Niagara Falls, there are a few ways to get around. Walking is the most popular option here, as many of the attractions are close to one another. You can also walk from the US side to the Canadian side and vice versa, using the Rainbow Bridge.
How to cross Rainbow Bridge -
There isn’t too many parking options near the falls themselves apart from hotel or casino parking lots but driving around Niagara itself can be a fun experience; especially for those wanting to visit the vineyards or further afield attractions.
You can rent a bike around the falls too or use the Niagara Transit bus network on the US side.
Typical costs of Niagara Falls
Now, let’s look at typical costs. There are plenty of budget hotel rooms in Niagara rooms on both the American and Canadian side. Budget private rooms start at $30 US Dollars whilst a nicer room costs between 50 to 150 US dollars.
There are lots of restaurants to choose from too, with chain restaurants available for families looking for something that everyone can enjoy. As a couple who ate out twice a day and picked up breakfast from a grocery store but also drank in the bars occasionally, we spend on average around $80 a day between us.

The legendary Niagara Falls is located on the border of the United States and Canada and the dull rumble of its raging waters gave the Niagara River its Indian name of Thundering Water. Travelling at up to fifty kilometres an hour and with several treacherous rapids, the Niagara is one of the world's wildest rivers. A small area of land named Goat Island divides the waters of the Niagara River into two falls, the American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls .At a width of around seven hundred metres Horseshoe Falls is more than twice as wide as the nearby American Falls. The water plunges fifty-five metres over the cliffs and continuously hollows out the rocks while the misty spray rises overhead and obscures the landscape. An increasing number of tourists from around the world come to experience the romantic qualities of this exceptional location. Indeed, in 1803 the younger brother of Napoleon, Jerome Bonaparte, and his wife, Elizabeth Patterson, enjoyed a honeymoon in Niagara!

There are so many things to do at Niagara Falls in New York, like taking a boat ride under the falls, night fireworks, or a trolley ride along the Niagara River. Let us be your travel guide as we explore the US side of the falls and show you these cool places. Just a note that while the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are on the US side and Horseshoe Falls are on the Canadian side, you can still see all of them.
This video is part of our epic road trip to all 5 US Great Lakes (Ontario, Erie, Huron, Superior & Michigan) where we visited Niagara Falls in New York, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands National Lakeshores, Mackinac Island, the Porcupine Mountains (Porkies as they say in da UP), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, the Lakeshore bike trail in Chicago, Frankenmuth the year-round Christmas city - are you tired yet? Oh and we ate a lot of pasties and fudge. Like a lot of fudge. So much fudge that we actually take no offense to the Yoopers and Trolls calling us Fudgies. We've been called much worse. It is believed that Niagara is a derivative of the Iroquoian word Onguiaahra, which was anglicized by missionaries.
Ice boom
Since 1964, the potential damage caused by floating ice has been controlled by an ice boom at the source of the river.
Flowing at a speed of 40 kilometres per hour, Niagara Whirlpool is a Class 6 rapid.
Ice bridge
The phenomenon occurs when there are a majority of days below zero each winter, leading to the ice bridge formation.
Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge connects the tourist districts of Niagara Falls, America with Niagara Falls, Ontario.

A Miracle at Niagara Falls
The summer of 1960 brought a miracle at Niagara Falls when Jim Honeycutt took his co-workers’ children, Deanne (17 years old) and Roger Woodward (7 years old), for a boat ride on the Upper Niagara River. While Jim died in the accident, Roger was rescued by the maid of the mist tour boat. Roger Woodward is the first and only person known to have gone over the falls unintentionally and survived without a protective capsule or any equipment.

Niagara Parks owns and maintains three retired power generating stations that are currently undergoing assessments to be considered for refurbishment and reuse in the future. The first one is the Canadian Niagara Power Generating Station. The second is the Toronto Power Generating Station, and the third one is the Ontario Power Generating Station. There are two active power generating stations owned and operated by Ontario Power Generation.

Almost all lots allow re-entry within one calendar day. Niagara Parks does not provide overnight parking.
