Nessebar, Bulgaria - World Heritage Journeys
At the crossroads of culture, Nessebar was a starting line for many European concepts we take for granted today. Originally a Thracian settlement, it became a Greek colony at the beginning of the 6th century BC. But the peninsular town possesses more than the remains of an assortment of iconic and historic eras. This hub on the Black Sea changed the world because the very concept of money was pioneered here.
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, the cobblestone streets encourage aimless wandering through the historic city, and the ancient trading atmosphere lives on with street vendors selling art and handicrafts throughout the town.

Nessebar is one of the heritage towns marked as not to be missed by all tourist guides. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nessebar is located in the south-east of Bulgaria, on a picturesque peninsula. Old wooden houses and Byzantine churches combine with the charm of the rocky coastline to create a unique ensemble, waiting to be discovered.
About 30 km north of Bourgas and only a few kilometers from the Coast of the Sun, located on a very small peninsula in the Black Sea, Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was founded by the Thracians around 3000 years before the new era and represents the richest city in Byzantine architecture in Bulgaria. In antiquity it was one of the powerful Hellenistic colonies on the southern (Bulgarian) coast of the Black Sea together with Sozopol (Apollonia) and Pomorie (Anhialo), its powerful rivals. Her name was Messemvria.
23 churches and monuments trace the Greek, Roman and Byzantine past of Nessebar. The city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and almost left it in 2010 due to the excessive invasion of the small peninsula by the stalls of merchants selling souvenirs to tourists.
Nessebar experienced a great economic and commercial boom in antiquity. Powerful colony, in the year 440 before the new era the city began to mint its own coins, then between the 3rd and 2nd century before the new era it began to mint its first gold coins. The objects exhibited in the city's archaeological museum testify to the wealth of its inhabitants and the opulent life that was led there.
Just like Sozopol Nessebar was conquered by the Roman legions around the year 70 before the new era. The capital of the Empire was not long in being established in Constantinople and Nessebar became the favorite place of the emperors who came to take care of their health at the thermal baths. After the establishment of Christianity as the official religion Nessebar continued to develop with the same pomp. More than 40 churches were built, the main one being called Saint Sofia, like the one in Constantinople.

Nessebar, Bulgaria - Drone 4K
Situated on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea, the more than 3,000-year-old site of Nessebar was originally a Thracian settlement (Menebria). At the beginning of the 6th century BC, the city became a Greek colony. The city’s remains, which date mostly from the Hellenistic period, include the acropolis, a temple of Apollo, an agora and a wall from the Thracian fortifications. Among other monuments, the Stara Mitropolia Basilica and the fortress date from the Middle Ages, when this was one of the most important Byzantine towns on the west coast of the Black Sea. Wooden houses built in the 19th century are typical of the Black Sea architecture of the period.

Nesebar (often transcribed as Nessebar and sometimes as Nesebur, Bulgarian: Несебър) is an ancient city and one of the major seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, located in Burgas Province. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Nesebar Municipality. Often referred to as the Pearl of the Black Sea, Nesebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. The small city exists in two parts separated by a narrow man-made isthmus with the ancient part of the settlement on the peninsula (previously an island), and the more modern section (i.e. hotels, later development) on the mainland side. The older part bears evidence of occupation by a variety of different civilisations over the course of its existence.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations and seaports on the Black Sea, in what has become a popular area with several large resorts—the largest, Sunny Beach, is situated immediately to the north of Nesebar.
Nesebar has on several occasions found itself on the frontier of a threatened empire, and as such it is a town with a rich history. Due to the city's abundance of historic buildings, UNESCO came to include Nesebar in its list of World Heritage Sites in 1983.

About Sveti Vlas itself
Sveti Vlas (also known as St. Vlas; Bulgarian: Свети Влас; Greek: Άγιος Βλάσιος), is a town and resort on the Black Sea coast in Nesebar municipality, Burgas Province, Bulgaria. In July, 2007 its population was 3,869.
The town is located at the foot of the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, in the northern part of Burgas Bay. A settlement was founded at the present place of Sveti Vlas in the 2nd century AD by Thracians and other Greeks, possibly Larissa (Λάρισα), though this site is more likely to be at Cape St. Athanasius. It acquired the name Sveti Vlas in the 14th century after Saint Blaise, a monastery dedicated to whom existed in the region, but was burnt down in the 14th-18th century by consecutive pirate raids. During the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, it was known as Kücük manastir or simply Manastir (monastery in greek), while the name Sveti Vlas became official after 1886.
Until 1920 the population of Sveti Vlas was predominantly Greek. After 1920 as a result of the exchange of population between Greece and Bulgaria most of the local Greeks emigrated to Western Thrace (ceded to Greece in 1920) Greece and found their new home in the village of Strymi (until 1920 Chadarli), Sapes municipality. Less than 10 Greek families remained in Sveti Vlas. After 1912 and especially after 1920 tens of Bulgarian families emigrated from Greece, predominantly from Greek Macedonia and established themselves in Sveti Vlas. The settlement became a climatic sea resort in 1963 and a town on 2 February 2006. Sveti Vlas is the only place on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where the beaches face directly south.
Sveti Vlas has grown as a tourist resort in recent times, serving as a quieter alternative to nearby Sunny Beach. The gap between the two places is shrinking as more hotels and holiday apartments are built along the coast. Sveti Vlas lies at the northern end of a bay which has Sunny Beach in its middle and the ancient town of Nesebar at its southern end. Sunny Beach and Nesebar are easily accessible by bus or taxi, and there are also boats going between Sveti Vlas and Nesebar.
The resort was mainly popular amongst inland Bulgarian tourists, but recently there is rapid growth in the number of foreign tourists, mainly from Russia, but also from Great Britain, Poland, Romania and Scandinavia. Even though Sveti Vlas was heavily developed in 2000's it remained pretty quiet and calm down place, making it good place to have a rest. Due to that fact the typical visitors in the resort are families with children.
The latest development of the area has been the building of the Dinevi marina, the largest in Bulgaria. The Dinevi brothers have been developing the area with numerous complexes, highlighted by the marina itself. The latest development being worked on is Complex Admiral, due to be completed in 2016. The beach was expanded in 2007 using rocks and sand that was removed when digging out for the marina. The marina with its clubs and restaurants has become famous among the wealthier people in Bulgaria, and expensive cars like Ferraris and Porsches can frequently be seen.

About Nessebar itself
This is one of the most beautiful cities on the Black Sea coast. Majestic white rocks, blue sea, golden sand and endless beaches, surrounded by sand dunes – Nessebar is a true diamond.
Due to the fact this town is mainly famous as a beach resort the majority of the local hotels are built in close proximity to the coast line. On the territory of each hotel there is a beach, a chain of restaurants and shops. Besides this, the well-equipped beaches of Nessebar offer renting sports equipment. Here you will find everything you need for scuba diving and surfing. Every hotel in Nessebar certainly has several swimming pools, a Turkish bath, a sauna, modern gyms, fitness centers and even a tennis courts.
Night life lovers won’t get bored here as when the darkness falls on the town, in Nessebar are light numerous lights of dance floors and night clubs. Don’t forget to visit local restaurants that will become a real discovery for lovers of exotic dishes. A distinctive feature of the local cuisine is a large choice of dishes with seafood. Here you can try grilled lobster tail, frog legs, mussels in batter, shark meat, shrimp cocktail, and many other delicacies. Of course, there are also restaurants that serve traditional European dishes.
When it comes to describing the sights of Nessebar, the majority of them are located in the old part of town, which is built on the beautiful picturesque island. Here simply everything is soaked in the atmosphere of tranquility and romance. All buildings of this part of the town were built during the Middle Ages. On the territory of the town are founded 40 ancient monasteries and churches, which were built mostly in the 5th – 6th centuries. You can also visit the ruins of the fortress wall.
On the border of the historic and new districts is an old windmill, which is considered one of the main symbols of Nessebar. The base of the mill is made of stone, while all the remaining parts are completely wooden, which makes the historical monument even more unique. Today, the mill is open to the public, on its first floor you can see the room where the flour was stored. On the second floor there are rooms in which the miller's family lived, and on the third floor, you can see the surviving millstone mechanism.
Today, many of Nessebar's old churches are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Particular attention should be paid to the 12th-century Church of St Paraskeva, which has preserved unique elements of antique decoration in its walls. Another unique architectural monument is the Church of St. Stephen built in the 11th century, while the Church of Christ Pantocrator is a striking example of medieval architecture. Despite the fact that this church is about 500 years old, it was possible to preserve the temple's original look.
A beautiful 19th-century manor house that once belonged to the wealthy merchant's family houses Nessebar Ethnographic Museum. Its collection is made up of very valuable and interesting exhibits: here you can see elegant antique furniture, unique handicrafts, works of art, as well as old national costumes and household items. In front of the museum, there is a small square where interesting entertaining events are always held on national holidays.
Nessebar has also preserved the ruins of the Byzantine baths, which are of great historical value. They were built in the 6th century, during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. The historical complex has been preserved only partially. According to historical data, the baths were often visited by emperors.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations and seaports on the Black Sea, in what has become a popular area with several large resorts—the largest, Sunny Beach, is situated immediately to the north of Nesebar.
