Losing/Finding My Mind In Namibia on a Solo Adventure!

This trip has been needed for quite a while! The Solo But Not Alone Series goes into it’s third part of the adventure, I head to Namibia on my own for a no plan trip, making it up as I go along! I managed to cross southern Namibia, heading past the Quiver Tree forest and Mesosaurus fossil camp near Keetmanshoop, then to the Duwiseb Castle, before making my way through to explore Sossus. There were some epic things that I thought would be fun to do in the area, like visit Valley of a Thousand Hills, and even hop on a Hot Air Balloon and take that over the Namib Desert! This trip was about a bit of soul searching, and how a solo trip can really help mental health! It’s important to take some time and do your own adventure every now and then!

Overland Adventure through Southern Africa

In January and February 2020 I took myself off on a rather spontaneous trip to Southern Africa. I've wanted to visit Africa for years but the stars never quite aligned to make it there till now.
I had the time of my LIFE. Hands down the very best trip I've ever taken. The places we saw, the things we did, the people I met, the animals, the days on the big purple lando - it was all completely fantastic! I genuinely could not recommend Southern Africa more - it is THE BEST!
I travelled with G Adventures and they deserve a big shoutout for being the best tour company I've travelled with! The trip I did was Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) to Cape Town (South Africa). It was 21 days of mostly camping, having a grand old time and seeing some of the most spectacular scenery you can imagine! You can check out the tour I did here - (unsponsored, just sharing some good knowledge of a time well had!).

While the whole trip was beyond spectacular, particular highlights were;
- Vic Falls, Zimbabwe
- Chobe River sunset cruise and National Park, Botswana
- Scenic flight over the Okavango Delta, Botswana
- Bush camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
- Etosha National Park, Namibia
- Skydiving and sandboarding in Swakopmund, Namibia
- Day trip up the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross, Namibia
- Sunrise at Dune 45 and Sossusvlei, Namibia
- Deadvlei, Namibia
- Fish River Canyon, Namibia
- Cape Town, South Africa

This video was primarily shot on iPhone and GoPro and edited using iMovie.

Part 1 in the series details the trip from Cape Town, South Africa to Van Zyl's Pass, Kaokoland, Namibia.

Tour Namibia in 12 Days with Africa4us

Is there any kind of travel experience more exciting, more exhilarating, and more unique than a safari? We don’t think so, either. Today, join TourRadar and Africa4us on a 12-day tour through Namibia; from the incredible wildlife to the fantastic accommodation and everything in between, get ready for a serious case of travel jealousy as we explore everything Namibia has to offer!

One of the most important things to consider when booking a safari journey is the type of transportation you’ll be using during game drives. While the classic Jeep is an iconic safari vehicle, there are plenty of other options available depending on your tour operator - and not all of them are created equal. Going on safari with Africa4us means travelling in their brand new overland safari vehicles, which include high elevation to increase visibility, single-windows so you have the view to yourself, and plenty of storage to keep all of your valuables.

While animal sightings are undoubtedly one of Namibia’s major draws, that’s not all this country has to offer. How about visiting Fish River Canyon - the second largest natural canyon in the world? Does walking barefoot through the vast desert sound appealing to you? What about sandboarding, or, for those looking for some extra adventure, skydiving? You may not expect to be able to enjoy these kinds of experiences on safari, but that’s the best part of touring - you never know what you could be doing next!

Of course, while there’s more to Namibia than its wildlife, we couldn’t forget about the country’s most famous residents! Travellers on this tour were able to view antelope, giraffes, elephants, and even had the incredible opportunity to watch a lioness with her young cub resting at a waterhole. The biggest problem travellers often have while on safari in Namibia is answering the question “what was your favourite part?” when they get home!

Are you ready to make some memories in Namibia? Head over to TourRadar to see this itinerary in more detail, or to find other amazing safari tours. Don’t be travel-jealous forever!

NAMIBIA overland adventure | Part One

Here our adventure begins with a 3-week long trip through the vast lands of Nambia.
Our adventure through Namibia began with an easy border crossing at Alexander Bay. We stocked up on food at Oranjemund and headed to Klein-Aus Vista Desert Horse Campsite. Here, we stayed for two nights and highly recommend campsite nr10, home to a magnificent Weaver bird nest that provided us with plenty of entertainment!

After spending our first night in Namibia we took a day trip to Lüderitz. A lovely town just a 1h30min drive from Aus. I would recommend that you visit Kolmanskop on the way as on return from Lüderitz it was a little late for us to enter - but we did manage to get some stunning photographs of the abandoned train station in the area. Keep an eye out for the wild horses, too!

After our stay in Aus, we hit the road towards Sesriem to visit the majestic Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon. On the way we stopped at the Prisoners-Of-War camp, today, only some of the foundations can be seen where there were once structures.

Entering Sesriem the land changes and kilometers of open land and orange sand dunes approach. There are no words to describe the beautiful landscapes, a must for all to experience visiting Namib.

We spend two nights at Sossus Oasis Campsite - a real treat with our own outdoor bathroom and basin. With a little 'dakkie' to protect you from the sun. Not to mention the swimming pool - so lovely to cool off after a long day on the road with a cold one.

Sossus Oasis is just outside of the Sossusvlei nature reserve, we entered early the next morning to visit Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon. - Bucketlist items ticked off.

The next day we took the road to Windhoek - our plan was to continue up to Swakopmund, but not all adventures go according to plan. We had an issue with the CV Joint on our left front wheel. Luckily we noticed the problem while in Lüderitz. We contacted Volkswagen and they were able to order the part for our Amarok from South Africa. We stayed at Monteiro, a lovely campsite just outside of the main city, and visited the famous Joe's Beer House (add that to your list).
Early the next morning we took our car into Volkswagen in Windhoek - we spend the day roaming around the city visiting some craft stores and local restaurants. Mid-day our car was done and we could continue our journey to Swakopmund.

A huge thank you to the team at Windhoek Volkswagen for fixing our Amarok - you guys are amazing!

Our journey continues in part two!
Cheers, Hein & Niki

The great Namibian Adventure part 1

Namibia – Land of the brave…
Namibia is built for road trips and adventure. While doing these self-drive tours, we often stop the convoy to savor the silence and behold the towering dunes, and the granite slab mountains seemingly ‘floating’ as they rise out of the churning desert sands. With the snaking desert roads disappearing into an endless horizon, there’s a world of discovery awaiting us. It’s an unforgettable country with unforgettable memories and even more amazing scenery.

Africa Adventures in Namibia and Uganda 2016

A short video of my incredible 2 months adventure over 8 countries in Southern Africa, in here I just cover a few places and experiences amongst millions of them in Namibia and Uganda.

Edit: The footage where I am sitting on a dune is not the Namib desert but the Kalahari desert on my first day of the trip through south Namibia.

I already uploaded a video of my experience at the Victoria Falls during the 30 days odyssey Overland Adventure with Wild Dog Safaris. An unforgettable experience. I've met so many people, saw unbelievable places and collected some of the dearest memories ever!

We were setting camp every single day in a different place and crossed three borders with our van. I was lucky to finally be able to realize my wildest dream of flying over the Namib desert. The footage in here is just a glimpse of what I actually saw and words can not fully express my emotions!

Uganda is the place where I welcomed 2016, in the lovely and peaceful Lake Bunyonyi (I hope the spelling is right this time!). Miha from Gorilla Highlands was the best guide I could possibly have! It was a REAL experience with the locals. First we camped in the wild at Queen Elizabeth national park, where we spotted the famous tree lions, hippos and so much more! Then we moved to the incredible lake Bunyonyi, for which I'd have to write a separate chapter, especially because Miha has set up an incredible initiative to help the locals. If there is a place I'd love to go back in Africa, that's by the Lake in Uganda.

I'll be writing and posting more videos of my experience in Africa in the upcoming months. I decided to keep the videos short and make more of them as it's easier for me.

Stay tuned and check out my website and subscribe to my channel for my experiences in Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles.

AHUGE THANK YOU TO:

Miha from for the warm welcome in Uganda

Liz from for the 30 days Odyssey trip.

Cape Point to Namibia | South Africa to Namibia | Southern Africa Adventure Safari Pt 1

This first episode covers our (family's) departure from Edmonton, Canada, to Cape Town, South Africa, where we did a bit of sightseeing at Sea Point and Victoria and Alfred (V&A) before joining the rest of the group of 16 and 2 guides on the overland adventure in Southern Africa.

First we visited Lion's Head in some inclement weather. The next day was a full day's drive to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, stopping at sights like Chapman's Peak, Hout Bay, and Simon's Town (for the penguins at Boulder's or Seaforth Beach).

On Day 3 we said goodbye to the Table Mountain, as we headed north through the “Swartland” and along the West Coast into Namaqualand. After a night in a hotel, we picked up supplies in Springbok before crossing the Orange River, and border, into Nambia.

Chapters:
00:00 Introduction
00:35 Cape Town
05:00 Lion's Head
08:18 Cape of Good Hope
13:13 Namaqualand
19:30 Orange River

This 24-day overland, camping adventure in Southern Africa covered South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe (and Zambia for some). We camped for 13 nights, the rest of which were spent in hotels, lodges or tented camps. Our group size was 16, comprising participants from Canada, Portugal, UK, Denmark, and Czech Republic.

Our guides from the NE South Africa region were Bheki and Duncan. We travelled in a purpose-built Hino truck by the operator, Drifters, though participants booked the trip through different agents.
