Namibia with Audley Travel

On a Namibia safari, you’ll find there’s more to the country than its wildlife. Taking a self-drive trip, you’ll pass sweeping sand dunes, wizened rock formations, barren deserts and shimmering salt pans.

Safari specialist Sam explored the country by car recently. As you can see in this video she’s put together, she tried out just some of the many activities you can do here.

In Sossusvlei, you can climb the Big Daddy dune (the tallest in the region) and visit Dead Vlei, where blackened trees stand out sharply against the orange sand. Then, head to the Namib Desert to join a fat-biking tour through the dunes.

Farther north, you can photograph weather-worn rock formations such as Spitzkoppe Rock Bridge and see cave paintings left by San people millennia ago.

Following the Etendeka Walking Trail with a guide opens your eyes to smaller aspects of the ecosystem, from animal tracks and skeletal remains to plant life and insects. You’ll also take in varied scenery as you walk through rock-strewn scrubland, with sharp mountain peaks rising in the distance.

And then there’s the wildlife. Game drives through Etosha National Park and Damaraland will get you close to elephant, giraffe, lion, rhino and herds of wildebeest and zebra.

WINDHOEK: One of the Cleanest Cities in AFRICA | 10 INTERESTING FACTS

The name ‘Windhoek’ is derived from Afrikaans meaning ‘windy corner’. Situated roughly in the center of the country, Windhoek is the largest and capital city of Namibia. This is an African country located on the Southwestern coast of Africa bordered by Angola to the North, Botswana to the East, Zambia to the Northeast, South Africa to the Southeast and South and Atlantic Ocean to the West. Windhoek is the social, political, economic and cultural center of Namibia. Its population in 2020 was 431,000 but is continually growing.

The tourist portal on the official city of Windhoek website reads; ’Windhoek is often described as one of the cleanest capitals in Africa and visitors are surprised that this city, considered to be part of deepest Africa, offers all modern amenities that conform to some of the world’s highest standards.”

When Windhoek was selected to host the Africities 2000 Summit, the Mayor of Windhoek at the time, Immanuel Ngatjizeko, positioned the city in terms of its “cleanliness” as an attribute setting Windhoek apart. It was regarded as a jewel to be jealously guarded. Its status as the “cleanest city in Africa” was peddled by City of Windhoek officials for a while until Kigali snatched the “crown” from Windhoek around 2015/2016. Arguably, this status did not come by chance, but was (and is) a result of an entrenched culture of cleanliness among people living in Windhoek.

Slogans such as ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ have really helped. Windhoek still features among the top 10 cleanest cities in Africa, coming in at number 5 after Kigali, Tunis, Port Louis and Cape Town. In March of this year, city of Windhoek councilors embarked on a clean-up campaign to reclaim its former glory. This campaign is supported by various stakeholders like Rent-a-Drum, Shoprite Namibia, Plastic Packaging, Namibia Recycling Forum, Development workshops and learners from schools in the Garoeb/Moses constituency. If everyone else gets on board, great change will definitely be observed in the city.

The National Botanic Garden of Namibia (NBGN)is situated on a hill between Klein Windhoek and the city center of Windhoek. This is the only botanic garden in the country. It is one of five subsections within the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Forestry. The mission of the Garden is to protect and promote the Namibian flora while functioning as a research, educational and recreational facility for Namibians and tourists as well.

The estate is about 12 hectares big. The larger part of the area is unlandscaped and serves as a study area for local students. A number of walking trails lead through the Garden where the most common woody plants are clearly labeled. Bird and plant lists are available at the reception. You’ll see the desert house, rockery and nursery house which are a comprehensive collection of Namibian succulents, many of which are rare and endangered.

The garden also claims to have one of the densest areas of the Windhoek Aloe. In the early 1970s a forest of quiver trees and bottle trees was planted and today, this forest is well worth the visit. Early in the year, after good rains, you can admire some of the garden lilies flowering along the Lily Walk. The garden is also home to a variety of insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. The picnic area provides the perfect spot to end your visit as you relax in the tranquil atmosphere of the garden.

The Gardens are open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every first Saturday of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. Entrance is free, save for the weekends. Just don’t litter, don’t damage any plant or plant materials and stay on the marked trails.

With the rapidly growing population of Windhoek and increased investment and development of the city, there was increased pressure on the supply of water. In 1968, the municipality built the plant making Windhoek the first city in the world to produce its own drinking water from wastewater. In 2002, the city built a new DPR plant next to the original one which is still in operation but only producing water for irrigation.

The Goreangab plant is often referred to as ‘the cradle of water reclamation’ and is believed to be the world's only pipe to pipe DPR facility. It produces purified water for over 400,000 city residents. This water is not treated again at conventional water treatment plants but goes directly into the distribution system. It is reported that no illnesses have plagued the city due to this purification system.

The Sandhof Lilies - One of Namibia’s natural wonders - Know Your Country

---------------------------------------------------------------

About This Episode:

Sometimes in life, conditions conspire at exactly the right time and work towards a single purpose, creating magic!

This is what happened on the Sandhof Farm north of Maltahöhe this month when thousands of so-called Sandhof lilies burst into bloom in awe-inspiring splendor.

The last time the lilies bloomed en masse here was in 2010. Perfect conditions are needed for this member of the Amaryllis plant family, Crinum paludosum, to grow and bloom. This happens only after good rains when the 700-hectare pan fills with 15 to 20cm of water. Within 7 days the plants appear and flower in a great celebration of life as if the earth has been patiently waiting.

Like magic, the event is short-lived and the exquisite show only lasts 4 to 7 days.

This year the magnificence of the ‘Sandhof lilies’ blesses us on Valentine’s day when our hearts are open to appreciating both natural beauty - and love.

Windhoek, Capital of Namibia

-- Windhoek, Capital of Namibia --

Windhoek is not your typical African capital. Rush hour lasts half an hour. People obey the rules of the road. It's almost as if some German efficiency from this former German protectorate has rubbed off on the inhabitants of Windhoek.

The capital of Namibia has a big German expat community, which adds to its culinary allure. It's probably one of the best places in Africa to enjoy authentic Teutonic specialties such as sauerkraut, schnitzel, various types of wurst (sausage) and of course, the local brew, Windhoek Lager.

Sustainability at Onguma

Oshivelo Farming is a 500-hectare vegetable farm located on the borders of Etosha, Oshivelo township and Onguma. Currently 94 hectares are under irrigation and Oshivelo Farming aims at
developing another 150 hectares in the foreseeable future. Water is sourced from strong boreholes on the property.

Starting from nothing but overgrown bush, Jan and Lizette developed the farm to the extent that it is currently one of the top five vegetable producers in Namibia.

Oshivelo Farming produces carrots year round, beetroot, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbage, maize, butternut and broccoli as well as papayas. Four hundred tons of vegetable is currently sold
monthly into the Namibian market. Clients range from major supermarket groups like Woolworths, Spar, Checkers and Food Lovers Market, to the informal traders through an outlet at Oshivelo.

Oshivelo Farming currently employs 180 local people on a permanent basis of which 80% are women. Up to 100 additional people are employed seasonally. All of these individuals were
previously unemployed, eking out an existence in Oshivelo.

In addition to the creation of sustainable jobs, Oshivelo Farming also regularly subsidizes vegetables to where there is a need. Assistance has also been given to the local school, in the form of fencing
around the school and to acquire tables and chairs for the scholars. Assistance has also been given to the local community in building a soccer field.

Jan and Lizette’s goal is to meaningfully assist and contribute to the upliftment of the community of Oshivelo and the surrounding district. Their passion for and commitment to their community is clearly visible in every aspect of the Oshivelo Township, their business and their personal lives.

You won’t easily find two humbler people, with great pride in their country, their workers, the farm and
the quality of their products. They have a passionate belief in the future and the spirit of working together to leave this world a better place than how they found it.

To find out more about Jan and Lizette, visit Oshivelo Farm to experience the passion and pride that took them from nothing to where Oshivelo Farming is today, in six short years - driven by intelligent hard work and long hours.

Onguma is very proud to be a part of this initiative. We believe that Onguma, together with Oshivelo
Farming, contributes positively to the lives of the Oshivelo community – both young and old.

Namibia's Best Kept Secret - Zambezi Floodplains

Namibia is a country of contrasts. From the red Kalahari to the floodplains of the Zambezi region. Watch as the might Zambezi River cuts across Namibia and end with a giant spectacle at the Victoria Falls.

The lure of wild Africa is felt as you drive into the north-eastern corner of Namibia. Once called the Caprivi strip and later the Caprivi region before claiming its full African heritage, the Zambezi region is a step into the heart of the continent.

A tree-filled expanse dotted with villages and elephant caution signs welcome you. Unusually, this corridor containing the Bwabwata National Park is a protected home to both wildlife and people, ushering in a concept of coexistence, stewardship and synergy. Two smaller national parks, the Mudumu and Nkasa Rupara, lie along the Kwando waterway that becomes the Linyanti and Chobe rivers as it flows eastwards.

This is also where you'll find some of our lodges. Namushasha River Lodge & Villa looking out onto reeds and the Kwando River, Chobe River Camp in the vast flood plains of the Chobe River and Zambezi Mubala Lodge & Camp on the mighty Zambezi. They are a wilderness havens where the lethargic sound of hippos grunting floats through the air intermingling with birdsong.

Every part of the day has its own magic here, whether taking a midday siesta or joining a boat cruise along the waterways and a drive into a national park. Return to the lodge to be welcomed with smiles and sweet sherry. Savour the last streaks of sunset from the deck before darkness descends and the delicious supper aromas can no longer be ignored.

Campaigning To Save Namibian Tourism - #SOStourism

The Namibian tourism industry is on the verge of collapse. And whether we want to acknowledge it or not, Tourism affects every single Namibian, be it directly or indirectly.

With #SOSTourism, Gondwana Collection Namibia aims to create awareness and start a countrywide conversation on how to assist the tourism industry where 120 000 jobs, 1000’s of companies and SME’s are at risk. Tour guides, craftsman, artists, entire community and conservation initiatives are on the brink of total collapse.

#SOSTourism advocates for more practical regulations to allow the tourism industry the opportunity to survive without posing any additional threat to the health of Namibians.

We hope that this will open the doors for further engagement, and discussions between all parties to revive Namibian Tourism.

Deadvlei Namibia – The 8th Wonder of the World!!!

Deadvlei is a white #claypan located near the more famous salt pan of #Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in #Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means dead marsh (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei). The pan also is referred to as Dooie Vlei which is the (presumably original) fully Afrikaans name. Dead Vlei has been claimed to be surrounded by the highest sand #dunes in the world, the highest reaching 300–400 meters (350m on average, named Big Daddy or Crazy Dune), which rest on a sandstone terrace.

The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the #Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive.

There are some species of plants remaining, such as #salsola and clumps of #nara, adapted to surviving off the morning mist and very rare rainfall. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to have died 600–700 years ago (ca. 1340-1430), are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry.

Deadvlei is a paradise for photographers as the contrast between the #pitch-black trees and bleached-white pans, and the rusty-red dunes and deep blue sky make for incredible images. Deadvlei is at least 1km walk from the parking lot so be sure to take drinking water with you. With some of the highest sand dunes in the world, the #NamibiaDesert has a number of activities for visitors to enjoy, like quad-biking in the dunes, to nature walks, to hot-air balloon flights and so much more making it one of the most popular areas to visit in Namibia.
