NEWARI food in NEPAL I TRADITIONAL dishes with LOCAL LIQUOR in KIRTIPUR and LALITPUR

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

► More street food in Nepal:

Taking ahead our food escapades in Nepal, in this episode we are exploring some authentic and traditional recipes from the cities of Kirtipur and Lalitpur. Along with our gracious and genial host Sanam Chitrakar, we visited two very special eateries that specialises in authentic traditional food from different parts of Nepal. This gastronomic journey includes a scrumptious experience from Newa Lahana in Kirtipur and Raithaane in Lalitpur (Patan). Kirtipur is an ancient city teeming with history, heritage, rich culture, hospitality, stunning landscape views and several monuments.

We started with Kirtipur. Situated at the distance of 5km south-west of Kathmandu, it is a center of the Newar culture. Here, Newa Lahana is a community run restaurant and open museum working towards the promotion and conservation of the Newar culture. With fully traditional setting, arrangements and menu, it is a flag bearer in presenting authentic Newari cuisine to the world. As we entered the kitchen, we were greeted by a jolly, dexterous and busy team of local womenfolk dressed in their traditional Haku Patasi. The menu here is quite extensive. We ordered Chatamari(rice pancakes with meat and egg), Samay Bhaji(Snacks Platter), Wo(lentil pancake), Chusya Mushya(grain based snacks platter), Shyapu Mhicha(bone marrow stuffed buffalo tripe) , Yomari(steamed rice cakes with jaggery filling) along with some native rice based liquor. The home style food was fresh and super flavourful. The variety flavours and textures was simply impressive. There is so much dynamism in the cuisine that leaves you gratified. Our ultimate favourite of the lot was the toothsome Yomari. The jaggery oozing out into the mouth from these steamed rice cakes transports you to a blissful zone where its just you and this popular (revered) dessert. The liquor made from fermented rice was strong and too sour for our palette.

From there we went to Lalitpur(Patan) to another special restaurant named Raithaane ( Founded by three passionate young men, it intends to introduce the world to the traditional ingredients and components of the diverse Nepalese cuisines through its super fascinating menu. It focuses on the under appreciated and under rated aspects- be it ingredients or cooking techniques-of Nepal's food traditions. Here we were joined by Prasantha Khanal, one of the co founders who briefed us about the lesser known dishes and ingredients from different parts of Nepal. At his recommendation, we tried some very unusual dishes like Rikikur(savoury potato pancakes), Kanchemba(buckwheat fries) and Chamre Fakse(aromatic rice with pork and wild lichen dish). Prasantha patiently familiarized us with the details of the dishes. The taste and flavours were very unique and unprecedented. Our favourite was the kanchambe with Timmur Chop(dried spice mix made with a local chilli). The experience at Raithaane was gratifying and insightful.

We are grateful to Sanam for taking us around to such amazing places, to the amazing team at Newa Lahana and Raithaane for such endeavour and to Prasantha for all the insights. Till next time keep walking and Keep exploring.

20 UNIQUE Street Foods in Kathmandu, NEPAL | Nepali & Indian Street Food | Nepali Food Tour ????????

What’s fun about Kathmandu is the amazing food diversity the city has to offer. Kathmandu is an incredible foodie destination.

We spent two full days hunting for the best street food in central Kathmandu, NEPAL. This time, we’ve covered Asan, Basantapur (and Kathmandu Durbar Square) and New Road.

There are hundreds of dishes and food items there. And it can be quite overwhelming and difficult to enjoy the Kathmandu food scene if you don’t know what you’re looking for and most importantly, where to look.

Here are the 20 street foods you absolutely must try in Kathmandu.

For our breakfast, we went to Asan. We had:
1. Jeri, also known as Jalebi in India, an orange deep-fried sweet in a pretzel shape.
2. Gwaramari, a Newari round bread.
3. Malpuwa (or Malpua), a pancake deep-fried in sugar syrup.

Then, we went to Indra Chowk. We had:
4. Lassi, a traditional curd / yoghurt drink from India.

For lunch, we had:
5. Mixed Chatamari, usually referred as a Nepali pizza but the one we had was like a crepe style or galette style (galettes are the salty version of crepes).

We went to two small (secret) Khaja Ghars near the newly rebuilt Kasthamandap to eat:
6. Anda Keema, a Newari dish, it’s a delicious egg steamed served in a small bowl with keema under the egg and curry on top.
7. Aloo Paratha, a roti (flatbread) stuffed with potatoes.

We headed to Aunty Sekuwa Corner for the best:
8. Chicken and Buff Sekuwa, a Nepali barbecued-style chicken or buff marinated in spices and cooked in wood fire.

At Narayan Dai ko Masangalli ko famous Momo, near Kathmandu Durbar Square, we tried:
9. Buff momo, Nepali steamed dumplings.

Then, we went to New Road to try:
10. Kachori Chaat, a spicy deep-fried puffed pastry filled with lentils crushed and mixed with many ingredients such as dahi (curd), chilli, onions, tomatoes, achaar, spices, …).

A week later, we came back to New Road to have breakfast. We had:
11. Puri Tarkari, a puffy bread served with a bowl of vegetable curry.
12. Chole Bhature, a bowl of spicy chickpeas with Bhature (huge puffed bred).
13. Rasmalai, a cottage cheese patty soaked inside a sweet milk cream.

We also wanted to try the trendy:
14. Chocolate Pani Puri, an empty deep-fried crispy dough ball filled with chocolate and whipped cream.

We found one small Khaja Ghar and tried:
15. Samosa, a triangular deep-fried pastry filled with spicy potatoes, peas, onions and other ingredients.
16. Samosa Chaat, a Samosa crushed and and mixed with many ingredients such as dahi (curd), chilli, onions, tomatoes, achaar, spices, …).

Then, our friends, Nissim and Sumeet, joined us. We had:
17. Pani Puri, an empty deep-fried crispy dough ball filled with a special mixture.
18. Dahi Puri, Pani Puri with Dahi (curd).

They brought us to a very secret place near Makhan Tole and we tried an amazing:
19. Chatpate, a mixture made of puffed rice, waiwai (instant noodles), herbs, spices, peanuts, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, lemon, chili

We ended our tour with style with a very unique:
20. Meetha Paan, betel leaves filled with many ingredients that were totally unknown to me.

Nepali STREET FOOD Tour in KATHMANDU (Momos, lassi, and more)

I went on a Nepali street food tour in Kathmandu, Nepal and tried all sorts of amazing dishes! We had buff momos, samosas, lassi, yomari, bara, papri chaat, jalebi, buff sekuwa, and fokso. It was my first time trying most of these dishes as an American traveler visiting Nepal for the first time.

I booked this tour for $35 through Airbnb Experiences:

Nepali Food - Momo taste test in Kathmandu, Nepal travel food video transcript:

Okay guys, so this video is going to be all about Momo (मम). Momos. How excited are you?

I'm very excited. So basically momo (མོག་མོག) are dumplings with Tibetan roots. Tibetan origins and you can have them steamed or fried. It is a really popular dish here in Nepal (नेपाल) so we're going to be trying to eat as many momos as possible in the coming days.

Yeah, so we're just going to hit up a bunch of different places and have different variations because some of them can be steamed, some of them can be fried. They can be sweet, they can be savory. We're going to try some with typical ingredients and also some ones that are more contemporary. Ooh. So we're going to be eating a lot of momo (饃饃). Let's go eat momo (मम)!

Vegetable Momos.

It is momo (饃饃) time.

So we ordered vegetable momo today.

Palak Paneer Momos & Chocolate Momos.

Alright guys, so we made it to the Momo Hut and I think the name says it all. This place specializes in momo (ममचा).

And actually they have over 20 varieties.

Some of the fillings are a bit unusual. You can get ostrich, a rabbit, chicken sausage, peanuts. But we've gone for something a little a little more tame.

We are having palak paneer. That is our savory one and we also got yummy chocolate with melted ooey gooey chocolate.

Pesto Momos & Pumpkin Momos.

So here we go. The pesto momos (मम) are here.

Yeah, so these are very contemporary. A contemporary take on momo (ममचा).

Okay, so we finished the pesto momo (馍馍) but this next dish is what we came for. We are having the pumpkin momo with a chocolate chili sauce and we had this yesterday on our 1st day in town.

Alright, I'm going to get lots of chocolate on here. Last time we didn't finish all of the chocolate. So we'll try not to make that same mistake. Oh la lah.

And this is a chili chocolate sauce guys. So it has got a bit of spice. And it is slightly bitter chocolate. It is so good. You can tell it is really high quality chocolate that has been melted.

Mmmm.

And the thing I like about the pumpkin filling in here. Mmmhmmm.

Is that is has got a lot of spices. It reminds me of like a really nice spiced Thanksgiving pie. A pumpkin pie that has a lot of spices put on top. Mmmhmmm.

This is just so good. Alright. We'll be coming we'll be eating this again.

The verdict?

We loved Momos (मम)!
