In 2019 before a pandemic took over the world, I made my childhood safari dreams come true. I booked a 5D4N safari with Mar Tours, which explored Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park.
Tarangire is Tanzania’s 6th largest National Park and covers an area of 2,600KM2. Most popular for it’s large elephant herds and mini-wildlife migration during the dry season that sees 250,000 animals enter the park.
Established in 1951, Serengeti National Park stretches across 14,763KM2. It is home to our planet’s largest movement of animals, called the great migration. More than 2.4 million wildebeest, zebra and antelope make their way across 800km of plains into Kenya’s Masai Mara.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the worlds largest inactive, unbroken and unfilled volcanic caldera. It was formed when an ancient volcano similar in size to Kilimanjaro erupted and collapsed on itself. The crater is 610m deep, 260 KM2 and approximately 30,000 animals call the crater home. One significant species you won’t see here is the giraffe… the steep cliffs are too difficult for them to navigate down.
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzanias smallest parks, with a total area of 330KM2. It’s known for the famous tree climbing lions, habituated baboons and large elephant populations. It’s home to over 400 species of bird including flamingos!
This was a budget safari experience. There are far more luxurious options available, but they can get pretty pricy. If you enjoy camping and “roughing it”, this was a very enjoyable experience. The food was amazing and our guide was English speaking & very knowledgable.

How to prepare your trip to Tanzania? This is your travelguide for Tanzania. Tanzania is an amazing country. You can hop between having the greatest safari of your life in the Serengeti national park and jumping into crystal clear water on Zanzibar. We absolutely enjoyed the trip and we will summarize all you need to know, if you are planning your trip to Tanzania. In this video we will answer how to apply for the visa in Tanzania. What you need to know about the yellow fever vacccination and malaria prophylaxis.
This was our travel route:
1 day Arusha
4 days safari (Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and Ngoronggoro)
1 day Arusha
10 days Zanzibar
How to prepare your visa for Tanzania:
First, you can apply for an e-visa or get a visa on arrival. Either way, you pay round about 50 US Dollars for the visa. When you apply for your visa online, you need to do it early enough. We got our visa granted in 4 days. So you need to apply for the visa at least 10 days before leaving. Friends of us did not get the visa on time. You can apply for your e-visa (online visa) here:
In the case you don't want to apply for the e-visa, you can also apply for the visa on arrival.
Here you find a list, which countries need a visa:
Yellow fever vaccination:
You don't need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania, because it is not a high risk area. However, they will not ask you when you enter Tanzania mainland or Zanzibar from your home country. But it can happen that they control your vaccination certificate when you enter Zanzibar after visiting Tanzania mainland first. This does not make sense at all, but it is a formal vaccine and it could happen they ask you for your certificate. So better be prepared. Our tip is: visit Zanzibar first and then go to Tanzania - this way around you won't have any problems. The other way around, you maybe need to be prepared by getting vaccinated before you go on your trip.
Malaria Prophylaxis:
Tanzania mainland is a high risk area for malaria. Especially when you go on a safari. The doctors told us to take malaria pills. We started to take them before leaving Germany and stopped taking them on Zanzibar.
Corona regulations for entering Tanzania:
At the moment (march 2022) you still need a negative PCR-test to enter Tanzania. Of course, this can change again. Right now, you also need to fill out a health form 24 hours before leaving.

In order to get into the park you have to do a 4-hour drive through Ngorongoro Conservation, no worries we will share more about this park in another video!
The Serengeti is the oldest national park in Tanzania for an area close to 15,000 square kilometers in size. It is well known around the world for its amazing biodiversity and abundant wildlife.
The Serengeti is home to hippos, warthogs, hartebeest, waterbucks, giraffes, impala, eland, bushbucks, roan antelopes, dik dik and Oryx, Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Rhinos and Buffaloes, cheetahs, hyenas, serval cats, jackals, wild dogs, otters, honey badgers, mongoose and the African golden wolf. There are also hyraxes, ground pangolin, crested porcupine, cape hare, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and aardvark. The primates in the park include baboons, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys. When it comes to reptiles, it is home to the serrated hinged terrapin, rainbow agama, Nile monitor, Nile crocodile, leopard tortoise, chameleons, and ver 500 species of birds call the Serengeti!
The Serengeti is also home to the largest wildlife migration in the world. The Great Migration is among the Seven Wonders of Africa and involves the movement of about 2.5 million wildebeest zebras, antelopes, and other grazers. We were there to witness it and it was absolutely breathtaking.
Our guide taught us the importance of learning to observe. Just driving by, seeing the animal, and snapping the pretty photo is not going to give you the real experience. If you stop, turn off the car, and actually watch what the animals are going to do next might have some amazing surprises for you to see!

These are some highlights of our 6-day African Safari through the northern parks in Tanzania. We went on many game drives and traveled through Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire national park.
