Mountain Gorilla Trekking In Virunga National Park, Congo DRC | 2018

In late 2017, we traveled to Virunga National Park located in the Democratic Republic of Congo to track the incredible mountain gorillas.

Virunga National Park is one of only 3 places in the world where you can come face to face with mountain gorillas in the wild (Uganda and Rwanda are the other two). And although most travel advisories urged us to forego travel to the DRC, due to the unstable situation in the region, we choose to support the park, its rangers, and it's mountain gorillas by spending our tourist dollars on this incredible wildlife experience.

Thanks to the rangers, guides, and the wonderful staff at the Virunga National Park, our visit to the park was INCREDIBLE!

TODAY WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE IN THE DR CONGO!!

I went trekking in the middle of the Congolese rainforest (Virunga National Park) to witness the incredible mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. If you can remember about 2 years ago, I did something similar in Uganda, but to be honest, it's 10X better in the DRC because we were the only ones here in this remote setting. I just can’t believe how human-like they are!

In other positive news, the world population of mountain gorillas has risen from about 600 to over 1,000 in the last decade, moving them from critically endangered to just endangered.

About Ubuntu Voyages:
Ubuntu Voyages specializes in gorilla trekking, mountain hike and wildlife safaris in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our mission is grounded in the philosophy of Ubuntu. The word “Ubuntu” is a Nguni word. Nguni languages are a group of bantu languages spoken in southern Africa by Nguni people. The nguni proverb “Ubuntu ngumtu ngabanye abantu” describes the core principle of Ubuntu and is translated as a person is a person through other persons. This can be rephrased as ‘I am, because of you’. The word ‘Ubuntu’ is also present in many bantu languages spoken in the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi; and it means “the fact of being a human”.
Our mission is to offer opportunities for people from different cultures and backgrounds to meet and connect. To strengthen and spread the philosophy of Ubuntu through tourism; and to go beyond psychological and geographical barriers between people for common interest of happiness in living and working together for a sustainable development. And finally to promote African values, among them solidarity and hospitality. Remembering that the later has been known as the characteristic of the Democratic Republic of Congo when it was called Zaire.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking | Uganda | Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Pre-COVID-19 pandemic, we spent a day in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park on the Uganda side of the Virunga Mountains in central Africa. There are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild. Their population is spread between Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This is what it's like to trek to the gorillas and experience them up close.

Mountain gorillas and Nyiragongo volcano at Virunga NP

In July of 2016, we had the opportunity to visit Africa’s oldest national park, the beautiful Virunga in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We spent one day with the Nyakamwe mountain gorilla family and on the following day hiked to the Nyiragongo Volcano, camping on the rim of the volcanic crater and watching the Earth’s largest lava lake.

Park rangers are fighting to protect the world’s last about 880 mountain gorillas who live here – from poachers and the threat of oil companies - even though it is protected as a Unesco world heritage site. If you want to know more about this amazing place visit their website:

Gorilla Trekking in the Congo (DRC) - Kahuzi Biega National Park

A couple weeks ago I ventured into Kahuzi Biega National Park in South Kivu, DRC to visit a family of habituated eastern lowland gorillas, one of the most endangered primates in the world. Before I even begin telling this incredible story, I want to try to put things into perspective. I was the only tourist in the entire park (the size of Palestine). I spent more than two hours with a family of eight gorillas. We trekked through the bush for four hours slashing our way through with machetes. My heart beats fast. The mother ape has just charged at us, incredibly angry and aggressive with her child by her side. I’ve noticed even the rangers standing next to me armed with AK-47s are worried. We are the vulnerable ones. We must show respect. The trek continues. A young male chews on a twig and looks at us curiously. The biggest thing I drew out of this experience was that this park needs help. It is home to the largest population remaining of eastern lowland gorillas but rebels and poachers continue to invade the park and people set up illegal mines. Organizations like @wwf are working hard to reestablish control over the land. But tourism is vital to make sure the park remains protected and viable for the future. If you're feeling up for it, I highly recommend visiting some day soon #KahuziBiega #CongoTourism #DRC #Gorillatrekking #gorillas

Kahuzi-Biega National Park: Gorilla Trekking in DRC

Nestled in the Democratic Republic of Congo is Kahuzi-Biega National Park, home to the eastern lowland gorilla or Grauer's gorilla.

During our time there, we were able to do 6 treks with these magnificent creatures. The Grauer's gorilla is considered endangered, with a decreasing populations as a result of a host of human activities - from the bushmeat trade to the effect that deforestation is having on their habitat.

While humans are undoubtedly the cause of the problem, we are also the only hope these sentient hominids have of survival into the future. Tourism has served to effectively protect gorillas in other parts of Africa and can generate revenue and communal goodwill for their conservation.

The only solution is to empower and incentivise communities to protect their wildlife. However, in the words of John Kahekwa, hungry stomachs have no ears. Impoverished communities need to benefit from the protection of wildlife in order for them to be a voice for wildlife and not another drain on diminishing natural resources.

Exploring the Magnificent Gorillas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Welcome to the enchanting world of the gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)! Prepare to be captivated as we embark on a journey to discover these magnificent creatures and the efforts dedicated to their conservation.

The DRC is home to both the critically endangered mountain gorillas and the endangered eastern lowland gorillas, making it a truly remarkable destination for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike. Let's delve into the awe-inspiring experiences and conservation initiatives surrounding these remarkable animals.

In the mist-covered Virunga Massif, a range of volcanic mountains stretching across the borders of the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda, lies the habitat of the majestic mountain gorillas. This region boasts the renowned Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, one-third of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population finds refuge. Traverse the lush forests, witness their intricate social interactions, and observe the tender care provided by dedicated conservationists.

Venturing further east, we encounter the eastern lowland gorillas, also known as Grauer's gorillas. These magnificent creatures thrive in the rich biodiversity of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park and the Maiko National Park. Immerse yourself in the dense jungles, and with the guidance of experienced trackers, catch a glimpse of these gentle giants in their natural habitat. However, the plight of the eastern lowland gorillas is not without challenges, as they face habitat loss and the threat of poaching.

To safeguard these incredible primates, passionate conservation organizations and local authorities are working tirelessly to protect their habitats and ensure their survival. Anti-poaching patrols, community-based conservation initiatives, and sustainable ecotourism projects are just some of the strategies employed to preserve these remarkable species. By supporting responsible tourism, you contribute directly to the conservation efforts and provide economic incentives for local communities to protect the gorillas and their ecosystems.

Embarking on a gorilla adventure in the DRC is not only a thrilling experience but also a chance to make a positive impact on the future of these extraordinary animals. As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, it is our responsibility to protect and conserve these iconic creatures for generations to come.

Join us on this extraordinary journey, where wildlife conservation meets the allure of adventure, as we explore the gorillas of the Democratic Republic of Congo – a true sanctuary for these magnificent beings. Together, let's celebrate their existence and work towards a sustainable future where they can continue to thrive in harmony with nature.
