MONTEVIDEO - Uruguay Travel Guide | Around The World
Montevideo is the pleasant capital city of Uruguay, a country in South America. It is situated on the east bank of the Rio de la Plata and is the southernmost capital city in South America.
Montevideo was founded in 1724. For much of its early history, the city consisted of what is now known as the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). By the mid-19th century the city began to grow eastward towards what is now known as Centro. The demolition of the old fort that used to mark the eastern boundary of Old Town enabled the construction of what is now Plaza Independencia. Eventually Boulevard Artigas was built around Centro, but by 1910, suburbs were already developing beyond it which were later annexed into the growing city.
Montevideo is not a large city, and many of the sites can be seen in several days as they are clustered together.
Ciudad Vieja — Montevideo's Old Town. Enter through the portal called Puerta de la Ciudadela at one end of Plaza de Independencia.
Plaza de Independencia — The square at the end of 18 de Julio Ave., with the latter being the main commercial artery of the city.
Palacio Salvo — Next to Plaza Independencia. Once South America's highest building, the Palacio Salvo still dominates Montevideo's skyline.
Mausoleo de Artigas — This large monument in the Plaza de Independencia pays tribute to José Gervasio Artigas, one of the heroes of the Uruguayan Independence. Under the monument is the mausoleum, which is open on the weekends. It contains an urn with his ashes and two honor guards keeping watch.
National History Museum — Spread between five old historic houses, holds important bits of the country's history. No entrance fee.
The sexual diversity monument, erected in 2005, is located on Policia Vieja St., between Plaza de la Constitución and Plaza Independencia. It reads Honouring diversity is honouring life; Montevideo is for the respect of all identities and sexual orientations. It's South America's first monument dedicated to sexual diversity. Other places of interest to gay people include the Edificio Liberaij, where two gay Argentine bank robbers (featured in the 1998 movie Plata Quemada) died in 1965.
El Día del Patrimonio, — On the last Saturday of September (or beginning of October), all the museums and historical places of interest around the Plaza de Independencia open for free to the public. There is also a large Murga, or a traditional South American parade in which all the Uruguayan political parties take part.
MAPI - museum of indigenous art and Uruguayan archaeology.
Museo Torres Garcia - displaying works of this most prominent Uruguayan artist.
Barrio Reus - a small neighbourhood with charming coulorful houses.
Palacio Legislativo - national parliament, the first one in South America and an iconic symbol of Uruguay´s long lasting democracy.
Museum of Natural History - built in the form of a mosque and located at the beach promenade.
Museo del Carnaval
MNAV - national museum of modern Uruguayan art.
Fortaleza General Artigas at Cerro - it now houses a collection of armoury. It is the original fort from which Montevideo originated.
Palacio Taranco - seat of the Museum of Decorative Art.
Mercado del Puerto - this is a covered market full of restaurants and some shops selling handicrafts. The main market is open every day during lunch hours. The restaurants around the exterior offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and they remain open for dinner.

Nacional - not only the name of the world famous football team but also the stadium where the first game of the first World Cup Uruguay 1930 was played.

Central Cemetery - a historic cemetery with sculptures

Uruguay is a country in South America. It has a South Atlantic Ocean coastline and lies between Argentina to the west and Brazil to the north. It is the second-smallest country in South America (after Suriname).
The name Uruguay means river of the colorful birds. It is a word in Guarani that was spoken by the natives of the area.
About half of the country's population is crammed into the Montevideo metro area and a strip of sprawl reaching east to Punta del Este. The rest are distributed among the small towns, farms, and ranches in the interior.

One of the best experiences to have while your stay at Uruguay is to watch a game between Nacional and Peñarol, the two most followed football teams in the nation.
Currency is the Uruguayan peso. Prices are often quoted using the U$ or $ symbol, which may be easily confused with the US$ (US dollar) symbol, so we use the International Standards Organisation's symbol of UYU placed before the amount with no intervening space.
Prices: Uruguayan cuisine is typical for temperate countries, high on butter, fat, and grains, low on spice. It is primarily Spanish with a very strong Italian influence (pizza and pasta) due to Uruguay's long history of Italian immigration. If you are from the Mediterranean, you will find it bland, but if you come from Northern Europe, Russia or the US, you won't have trouble getting used to it.
The legal purchasing age of alcoholic beverages is 18 and is strictly enforced, although there isn't a legally defined drinking age.
For nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a respite from the fast-paced world, there are many estancias in serene and peaceful environments, surrounded by many species of native and migrating birds, which offer an unique opportunity to reconnect with nature.
Historically, Uruguay has enjoyed a very low rate of violent crime compared to its neighbours, with the stress on the word violent. Thus, Argentines and Brazilians traditionally go on vacation in Uruguay (even though Rio de Janeiro has far more beautiful natural scenery) because they love not having to worry about being carjacked, kidnapped, or assaulted while on vacation. Even today, Uruguay is still relatively free of those types of crimes.
Although Uruguay has become The Netherlands of South America, its drug laws are completely different from that of the Netherlands, as there is more government regulation.
Cannabis was fully legalized in the country in December 2013. That being said, don't think you can just take a trip to Uruguay for the purpose of consuming cannabis. The new laws only apply to citizens of Uruguay that are 18 or older. Cannabis is prohibited to non-Uruguayan citizens. If you wish to become a Uruguayan citizen, you should be aware that you must register with the Uruguayan authorities in order to consume cannabis.

Montevideo is the pleasant capital city of Uruguay, a country in South America. It is situated on the east bank of the Rio de la Plata and is the southernmost capital city in South America. It revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. This plaza leads to Ciudad Vieja (the old town), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and landmarks including the towering Palacio Salvo and neoclassical performance hall Solís Theatre. Mercado del Puerto is an old port market filled with many steakhouses.
Montevideo was founded in 1724. For much of its early history, the city consisted of what is now known as the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). By the mid-19th century the city began to grow eastward towards what is now known as Centro. The demolition of the old fort that used to mark the eastern boundary of Old Town enabled the construction of what is now Plaza Independencia. Eventually Boulevard Artigas was built around Centro, but by 1910, suburbs were already developing beyond it which were later annexed into the growing city.
The nation’s capital and home to nearly half of Uruguay’s population, Montevideo is a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life. Stretching 20km from east to west, the city wears many faces, from its industrial port to the exclusive beachside suburb of Carrasco near the airport. In the historic downtown business district, art deco and neoclassical buildings jostle for space alongside grimy, worn-out skyscrapers that appear airlifted from Havana or Ceauşescu’s Romania, while to the southeast the shopping malls and modern high-rises of beach communities such as Punta Carretas and Pocitos bear more resemblance to those of Miami or Copacabana. Music, theater and the arts are alive and well here – from elegant older theaters and cozy little tango bars to modern beachfront discos – and there’s a strong international flavor, thanks to the many foreign cultural centers and Montevideo’s status as administrative headquarters for Mercosur, South America’s leading trading bloc.
Montevideo is not a large city and it boasts a very efficient public transportation system so getting around is not difficult at all. If you are not bashful about your Spanish, feel free to ask people which bus route you need to take to get to your destination as it can be the most effective and cheap option. The Rambla is a waterside roadway has people biking, fishing, drinking mate, and enjoying the great views. Spend part of Sunday morning with the locals on La Feria Tristán Narvaja Flea Market. Pocitos barrio lies about 2 miles south-east of El Centro. The Pocitos beach runs east from Punta Trouville for about a mile.
