Hammock Ridgelines

When you talk about a ridgeline, you may be referencing three different parts of your hammock setup. Our founder, Dutch, explains the difference between these three ridgelines.

The first ridgeline is the apex of your tarp. A tarp ridgeline helps keep your tarp tightly secured so it can protect your hammock underneath.

The second meaning of ridgeline refers to the equipment that suspends your tarp above your hammock. You can create a split or continuous ridgeline with this gear. At DutchWare, we provide the accessories you need for both types of ridgelines so you can set up your tarp without complex knots.

The third instance in which you would use the word ridgeline is when referring to the hammock ridgeline. DutchWare offers two different types of structural hammock ridgelines: adjustable and fixed. With either of these two kinds of ridgelines, you can adjust the amount of sag in your hammock to your liking. Make sure you're referring to the right item when searching for ridgelines for your camping gear.

We know you depend on your outdoor gear to protect you from the elements. When you shop with DutchWare, you can be confident you're getting the best hammocks and accessories at the best prices.

Warbonnet Ridgerunner Dogbone Suspension Retrofit using 7/64th Amsteel

KdawgCrazy did a video where he expressed that he wanted to change out the stock dogbones on his Ridgerunner and I took full advantage to play with Amsteel. I am making Kdawg 2 matched sets out of 7/64th Amsteel.

The issue is the stock dogbones are quite long, probably for stability, and if you want to make a winter palace out of a long tarp, his was a Kelty Noah's Tarp 12, the two dogbones are so long that having the closed overlapping doors aren't happening. By shortening up the dogbones, the tarp should close now.

The measurements that I found work for my is a piece of 7/64th Amsteel 49.5 inches in length. From each end I mark spots of 3.5 inches for the bury, then 3 inches from that mark or 6.5 inches from the end. I also put a mark at 5 inches just so I can compare the measures and to help see that I am being accurate.

Fixed Structural Ridgeline For Hammocks using 1/8th Amsteel

Doing some experimenting with hammock suspension. Upping the overall strength capacity. This is the ridgeline now that I know the length that works for this hammock so decided to go fixed. I am using 1/8th amsteel that has break strength of 2500lbs.

????LIVE UCR Universal Constrictor Rope For Hammock Ridgeline Using Amsteel

A continuation of a series I am doing while I make a hammock for my daughter. In this video we make the UCR, or Universal Constrictor Rope to be used as the adjustable ridgeline. Turned out I didn't leave enough room on the constrictor so I will need to remake it. Same process, but a little longer restrictor and I don't want to record it all over. I hope the method is clear enough.

DIY Robic Hammock, Amsteel Suspension, Tree Huggers and Bugnet for Kentucky Woodsman

Had a lot of fun collaborating with Chris of the Kentucky Woodsman channel, . We built a super lightweight hammock using Olive Drab Robic 1oz ripstop for the main hammock, 15 foot 1 inch webbing treehuggers, amsteel whoopie slings and adjustable ridgeline, 0.5oz bugnet and ridgeline organizer.

DIY Hammocks, Whoopie Slings, Tree Huggers and Structural Ridgelines

I made a couple hammock systems. One for Stan at Deep South Experience and one for Shane at Pennsylvania Shane.

They are 12 foot hammocks of 1.9oz nylon with webbing for tree huggers, whoopie slings and structural adjustable ridgelines. The stuff sacks have 550 Firecord to tighten them up.

Making Big Whoopie Slings for Heavier Hammock Hangers

For more information on this and other topics please visit

I needed to make some whoopie slings for my new REI Quarter Dome Air Hammock so I could hang with the big trees around here. I had also been wondering about going a little bigger with 1/8th amsteel, rather than the 7/64th size to up the strength. The procedure is the same, but the end overall strength to forces almost double.

The average break strength:
7/64th is 1600lbs
1/8th is 2500lbs

The weight of a whoopie sling made from 12.5 feet of 7/64th was 0.6 ounce, while the 1/8th came in at 1 ounce even.

To me the 0.4 added ounce is worth the weight in accordance to the added strength added.

And I love to experiment and learn.

How to make a Marpat Hammock
