Adham Khan, son of Maham Anga, a wet nurse of Akbar, was a nobleman and general in Akbar's army. In 1561, he fell out with Ataga Khan,- Akbar's Prime Minister, and husband of Jiji Anga, another wet nurse, and killed him, whereupon he was thrown down from the ramparts of Agra Fort twice, by the order of the emperor Akbar and died.

In 1830s, a British officer named Blake of Bengal Civil Service, converted this tomb into his residential apartment and removed the graves to make way for his dining hall. Though the officer died soon, it continued to be used as a rest house for many years by the British, and at one point even as a police station and a post office. The tomb was vacated and later restored by the orders of Lord Curzon, and the grave of Adham Khan has since been restored to the site, and lies right below the central dome, though that of his mother Maham Anga never was.

This video is based on our visit to Jodha Bai ka Maqbara(जोधा बाई का मकबरा) or Jodha Bai ki Samadhi. Jodha Bai was also known as Mariam uz Zamani and this place is called Mariam uz Zamani Tomb. Jodha Bai ki Kahani(जोधा बाई की कहानी) is also searched for on Youtube as she was married to popular Mughal Emperor Akbar and there are some famous Jodha Bai bhajan or Jodha Bai ka bhajan(जोधा बाई का भजन) related to their love story. Jodha Bai movie(जोधा बाई फिल्म) is quite popular in which Jodha Bai movie song(जोधा बाई सॉन्ग) was shot in Amer, Jaipur and Jodha Bai ka Mahal(Mariam uz Zamani Palace/जोधा बाई का महल) is located in Fatehpur Sikri. Some people ask Jodha bai kiski putri thi(जोधा बाई किसकी पुत्री थी/जोधा बाई किसकी बेटी थी) or Jodha bai kaun thi(Mariam uz zamani kon thi/जोधा बाई कौन थी), and Jodha bai kahan ki thi. I must tell you that Jodha Bai(जोधा बाई का इतिहास) was a resident of Amer and was daughter of Amer's king Bharmal and later she got married to the Mughal Emperor Akbar(Mariam uz zamani Jodha Akbar/जोधा बाई अकबर). A television serial was also made on Jodha Bai and Akbar

In this video's thumbnail, you will also see Jodha bai original photo(Mariam uz zamani real photo). Mariam uz zamani children's name was Hassan Mirza and Husaain Mirza but later they died and after some years she gave birth to Jahangir(Mariam uz Zamani son). There is not much evidence of Mariam uz zamani death(जोधा बाई की मृत्यु कैसे हुई/जोधा बाई की मौत कैसे हुई) in history. There are no details about Mariam uz zamani sisters in history or Mariam uz zamani Jodha bai.

Mariam-uz-Zamani's or Mariam's Tomb is known to be the mausoleum of Mariam-uz-Zamani, who is popularly known as Jodha bai, the favorite consort of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The tomb was built by her son Nuruddin Mohammad Salim (known as Jahangir), in her memory between 1623-1627 and is situated in Sikandra, next to Akbar's Tomb, towards the direction of Mathura. She is known to be the only wife of Akbar who was buried near to him.

Mariam-uz-Zamani was actually born as a Rajput princess and was called Harkha Bai, and she was the eldest daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amer. She was married to Mughal Emperor Akbar in the year 1562 CE and was honored with the prestigious title of Mariam-uz-Zamani ('Mary/Compassionate of the Age') after she gave birth to her 3rd son, Nuruddin Mohammad Salim (Jahangir) in 1569 CE. She died on 19 May 1623 in Agra and was buried quite near to her husband Akbar. There is no concrete evidence that states the reason for Jodha Bai's death but it is believed to be due of sickness. Her son Jahangir made a tomb for her between the year 1623 and 1627 CE. The tomb is situated 1 km away from Akbar's tomb, and is known to be the only nearest of all the tombs of his all other wives. She is better known as the first and last love of Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Alongside Empress Mariam-uz-Zamani, her grand daughter known as Bahar Banu Begum is also buried in the same mausoleum compound which tells that she might have been her favourite.

This tomb has been quite damaged by the addition of a lot of white plaster during the British rule which actually shadowed the tomb's former beauty. This mausoleum was known to be used as a printing press for an orphanage centre during the British rule and has suffered a lot of damage. Before the mutiny when the High Court used to be in Agra, the Government Press was located in this mausoleum and the Native Christian school as well as the Orphanage occupied some portion of the garden. Ever since the government press was transferred to Allahabad the whole mausoleum and garden was passed into the hands of the native government who put up a huge number of partitioned walls in the mausoleum and made factories there, which actually damaged the tomb. After India-Pakistan partition the tomb also housed Sindhi refugees and at that time it was degraded further.

Mariam-uz-Zamani made a large garden close to the tomb of Akbar in Sikandra which originally had an open baradari (pleasure pavilion) that was built during the rule of Sikander Lodi, in the year 1495 AD. After Mariam's death in May 1623, she was buried 1 km away from her husband's tomb and the baradari was converted into a mausoleum by Jahangir who made a large tomb over her grave and made a crypt below the central compartment and finally remodelling it drastically with a lot of additions of embellishments such as frescoes and floral carvings.

The mausoleum consists of three tombstones: one out of which is the underground mortuary chamber, which is actually the grave; the cenotaph is just above it; and there is one more cenotaph on the terrace. The ground floor has a total of forty chambers, which has faint traces of paintings on plastered walls. The center of the ground floor consists of the cenotaph of Empress Mariam-uz-Zamani.

Humayun's Tomb

Humayun was sandwiched between the ambitious Babur and the visionary Akbar. Add avaricious brothers and defiant governors into the mix, and you have a king caught in a bad place. He struggled, but managed to hold on tenaciously to his kingdom. And when he died, his son, Akbar built a tomb befitting of an emperor for him.

Humayun’s tomb stands in all its majestic glory in the heart of Delhi, ensconced in its own lush gardens, one of the earliest mausoleums to be built this way. It has inspired many later buildings, including the Taj Mahal. Who else is buried in this tomb complex? Just how did the insides look when it was first built? And what happened to this imposing monument when the Mughals lost power?

Join us on the Storytrails podcast, and listen as Ms Swapna Liddle takes us through this glorious monument called Humayun’s tomb.

Mughal Tombs

The square domed tomb has an arcaded entrance in eachof its four sides. Blind arches provide relief on the facade and a sixteen sided blind arcade provides the springing point for the dome. Thebuilding has split with cracks through the centers of each of the four sides; these had to be carefully stitched back together using traditional materials and techniques.

Tomb of Rahim

the architects of the Taj Mahal derived their inspiration, from two buildings at Delhi which predetermined it in certain aspects of its conformation. These are the mausoleum of Humayun and the Tomb of Abdur Rahim Khan I Khanan

Abdur Rahim (1556-1627) was the son of Bairam Khan-i-Khanan, who was a close associate of Emperor Humayun and the regent of young Akbar.
His tomb is situated in Nizamuddin East on the Mathura road, near Humayun's Tomb, in New Delhi. It was built by him for his wife in 1598, and his body was placed in it in 1627.In 1753-54, marble and sandstone from this tomb was used in the construction of Safdarjung's Tomb, also in New Delhi.

Quli Khan’s Tomb, Mehrauli, Delhi.

Quli Khan’s Tomb, Mehrauli Archaeological Park, is one of the most stunning tombs in the entire city of Delhi. Its magnificence is matched only by its seclusion. Annexes were added to the tomb by Sir Thomas Metcalfe, the British Agent (negotiator) at the court of the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah “Zafar” II, from 1835-53 A.D. who bought the tomb and converted it into his monsoon retreat.

#TRAVELOGY EP 25 PART 06 HERITAGE BUILDING | BERKUNJUNG KE HUMAYUN'S TOMB NEW DELHI

▶ Check out my gear on Kit:

About Fort -
Mehrangarh the Fort of Jodhpur crowns a rocky hill that rises 400 feet above the surrounding plain, and appears both to command and to meld with the landscape. One of the largest forts in Rajasthan, it contains some of the finest palaces and preserves in its museum many priceless relics of Indian courtly life.

For over five centuries Mehrangarh has been the headquarters of the senior branch of Rajput clan known as the Rathores. According to their bards, the ruling dynasty of this clan had at an earlier period controlled Kanauj (in what is known as Uttar Pradesh). Like other prominent medieval Rajput rulers – including the famous Prithviraj Chauhan – they were defeated by the invaders from Afghanistan at the end of the 12th century. This catastrophe led to the disruption and migration of the early Rajput clans that they led. The Rathores came to Pali, in Marwar, in what is now central Rajasthan. It is claimed that they were to settle there to protect Brahmin villages against cattle-rustling local tribes. The story may seem somewhat fanciful, but the protection of the priestly caste in one of the traditional roles assigned to the Rajputs. Their task in Pali was the basis of their expanding power in the region.

Rao Chunda (r. 1384-1428), the twelfth Rathore to rule in Marwar, established his capital at Mandore, which he had acquired as a part of a dowry. Two generations later, Rao Jodha (r. 1438-89) began to build a fort at a new site six miles to the south, on an isolated rock with a higher elevation and better natural defences. Jodhpur, the town that sprang up at its base, was named after him. The fort was named Mehrangarh, meaning ‘fort of the sun’ – a reference to the clan’s mythical descent from the sun god Surya. Over 500 yards long, its wall rises in places to a height of 120 feet and is 70 feet thick.

For Rao Jodha’s successors, these defences were essential, though not always adequate. The centuries following the fort’s foundation were marked by rivalries between the Rajput clans and by other external threats. A dominant influence over the region was asserted first by the Delhi Sultanate and later by the Mughals. As they built their empire in India, the Mughals sought to subdue Rajput states like Marwar and its neighbours in Rajasthan, but they did not wish to eradicate them. To most established Indian rulers they preferred to offer terms of subsidiary alliance: serve the empire, they said, and you can retain control over your ancestral lands. Four successive generations of rulers in Marwar, between 1581 and 1678, accepted this challenge and became loyal allies and in effect feudatory chiefs of the empire. But for decades both before and after this phase, the understanding with the Mughals broke down, the city and fort of Jodhpur were overrun, and the Rathores were reduced to guerrilla-style resistance in their own kingdom. It did not make matters easier that their relations with the bordering Rajput states such as Jaipur and Bikaner also tended to be volatile.

In those unstable times, a fort like Mehrangarh was an object of great power and prestige; in today’s terms it would be rather like owning an aircraft carrier. Its uses, perhaps, were somewhat more varied; it was not just a military base, but also a palace for the rulers and their wives; a centre of patronage for the arts, music, literature; and with its many temples and shrines it was also a place of worship. These diverse uses are reflected in many buildings within.

The current head of the Rathore clan and custodian of the fort, Maharaja Gaj Singh II, has preserved the buildings and developed the museum as a record of the lives of his predecessors. His ancestors ruled the state of Marwar and over many generations built this architectural treasure, and it falls to him to ensure that their legacy is maintained and understood.
