GUAM | Things I Miss About Guam | If I visit again, these would be the first things I do!

#guam #guamlife #islandlife

It's been about 9 or 10 months since I left my beautiful island home Guam, and now I'm definitely missing certain things that I can't get anywhere else. If you're a newcomer or you may be moving to the island soon, here are my top 8 things I miss about Guam!

1. Guam beaches! It is an understatement to say that Guam beaches are some of the most beautiful sites you'll ever experience. Not only are they gorgeous, but they're also so easy to get to! My favorite beach for fun, drinking, and sports was definitely Dungca's Beach next to the Jimmy Dee's bar in Tamuning. For quiet and calm scenery, I loved places like the Inarajan Pools, Lotte Beach, Alupang Drive, and so many more. These were perfect settings for meditation or a nice drive away from your busy lifestyle to just be one with nature.

2. My favorite dishes from certain restaurants! Granted you may be able to find dishes similar to these, but of course you can't get an exact match. Some favorites include the spicy tomato penne from Capricciosa, Manicotti and Fettuccine Alfredo from Vitale's, and the soups from Simply Food.

3. Fiesta plates! If you ever get invited to a village fiesta or family fiesta, you must go! You'll fall in love with all the local dishes prepared. Some of my favorite items are Chamoru BBQ, red rice, kelaguen, and pancit.

4. Coconut trees and flame trees! You know you're in a tropical paradise when there are coconut trees everywhere LOL! The more sentimental reason I miss coconut trees is because our dog Max loved playing with coconuts and husking them :(

5. Carabao Brewing's Coconut Porter! Living in Virginia now, yes I have access to so many breweries, but I have yet to find a dark beer that comes close to that awesome porter on Guam. However, that does make it more special because knowing that's the only place I can get that beer, it's just going to taste that much sweeter whenever I get to pay a visit back :)

6. My favorite bars! My favorite nightlife spots would have to be Horse and Cow, Old Traditions, and Porky's Bar. Horse and Cow has a great food and beer selection, but it also has a lot of fun elements for you active adults, like pool tables, a jukebox, video games, and beer pong tables. Old Traditions is located in the quieter side of Tumon, and it was our favorite spot to play darts, foosball, beer pong, and enjoy live music when they had it. It was also one of the very few places that allowed us to bring our dog Max with us, so that was pretty awesome! Porky's Bar in the busier part of Tumon was our go-to for live rock music, from 80's to acoustic, you name it. The positive vibe from everyone just having a great time, plus the awesome service from the friendly bartenders, made this an easy spot to have a fun night.

7. Rockit Ride! This rhythmic cycling studio was a huge part of my workout regimen. I would do 4-5 classes a week because I loved it so much! I haven't really looked around Virginia much to find a place like this, but I'm sure they got to be around here. More so, I'm so sad that I left when my sister started training to be an instructor and is now one of their main ones! I'd love to take her class if I get the chance to visit.

8. Snorkeling! I never knew how much I loved this until I couldn't get the same experience out here. Guam's waters are not only safe and warm, but they're also so clear, which means you can see exactly what you're jumping into LOL! Once you get in though, there are so many species of marine life--from jellyfish to turtles to black-tip sharks, you're always bound to see something whenever you go snorkeling on Guam. My favorite spots would have to be Fish Eye, Ague Cove, Gun Beach, and Gab Gab, but of course, there are so many other awesome snorkeling locations to discover!

0:46 Location - Where is Guam? We're a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, within the vicinity of Australia, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. It's very easy to travel from here to other parts of Southeast Asia.

1:34 Size - 30 miles long, about 210 sq. miles. As of 2021, its population is roughly 168,000. From personal experience, you could drive around the entire island in about 2 hours, which means commute from home to workplace is never more than 30-40 minutes.

2:10 Weather - It is consistently humid on Guam. Summertime is when the warmer temperatures are felt with highs between 88-91 degrees F and lows between 77-80 degrees F. You WILL sweat so dress light! Cooler temperatures in the 70s occur during the months of November to January/mid-February.

2:50 Religion - Guam is a predominantly Catholic community, but there are other smaller church groups such as Baptist, Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist, etc. that exist.

3:09 Schools - There are 27 public Elementary Schools, 8 public Middle Schools, 6 public High Schools, and about 13-14 private schools that house a variety of grade levels. The two college level schools present are the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Guam colleges are highly recommended if you want to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.

3:38 Military on Guam - There are two main military installations, one being Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo and the other being Naval Base Guam (Big Navy) in Santa Rita. There are other smaller installations around the island like NCTS, Naval Magazine, Naval Hospital, etc. which means many federal job opportunities AND a high turnover cycle for military personnel and families stationed on Guam.

4:15 People - This mini melting pot is home to so many! Ranging from CHamorus, Filipinos, tourists, military, and other Micronesian Islanders, you're bound to meet people from so many backgrounds and ethnicities. DON'T mix up the CHamorus with chods/chauds. A true CHamoru will be very welcoming and hospitable to newcomers while a chod/chaud will be more closed off.

6:38 Where to stay - This is a broad statement because the bottomline is that you should definitely explore the different areas and villages IN PERSON. From a general description, the noisier, busier parts of Guam would be the villages of Dededo, Tumon, Tamuning, and sometimes east Agana. The quieter areas that are away from the hustle and bustle would be villages like Mangilao, Yona, Talofofo, Inarajan, Asan, Agat, Santa Rita, Umatac, and Merizo.

8:10 Different personal experiences - I'm not going to lie and say everyone has loved Guam; people have either loved their time here or they've hated it. However, it all depends on what YOU make of it. Are you going to stay at home the whole time and miss out on potential experiences and friendships, or are you someone that will explore the island and make an active effort to meet people and discover all the hidden gems Guam has to offer? It's really up to you when you get here.

GUAM | 6 Things You Should Know

If you’re planning to visit Guam or are potentially moving to Guam, this video shares about some interesting things and fun facts you should know about the island life. If you want to learn about the basics of Guam like everyday weather, location, people, etc. then you can definitely check out these videos:

Guam | People, Weather, Military, Travel:
Guam | Basic Needs:

1. Geckos - You can find geckos almost anywhere on Guam. In fact, it would be odd to visit and not see at least one! They are completely harmless though, even if they can be a little annoying if you see them in your house. The good thing is that they prey on other pests like roaches, ants, and spiders, so as long as I don't see those around, geckos a welcome annoyance in my house!

2. Roads - Guam doesn't have the smoothest roads unfortunately. Other than the main route that goes north to south across the whole island, a lot of the side roads are very bumpy, uneven, and sometimes have potholes. So you definitely have to be careful how you drive in certain areas. If you're not cautious then you'll be spending a lot more on tire maintenance!

3. Base access (visitor passes) - The military bases on Guam are definitely more strict than the ones in the states when it comes to letting civilians in. The process of attaining a visitor's pass involves a thorough background check which usually means a longer wait time, sometimes over an hour! It can be tedious but necessary, of course.

4. Babies (ma'goddai) - If you have babies, don't be alarmed if the older Chamoru people insist on touching or pinching them for the sake of protecting them from spirits. This stems to an old Chamoru belief that some spirits who are attracted to cute babies may try to steal them. So pinching babies and making them fussy or cry would give them an ugly appearance that would then make them unappealing to the spirits. Ma'goddai refers to the strong urge or desire to hug, pinch, or squeeze a baby because they are just so cute. However you should't feel pressured to let your baby be pinched just because of this local belief.

5. Locals dating (or not dating) locals - There is a good number of local people who choose not to date within their culture, purely because there's a chance they may be related to that person. In my experience, when two people were interested in each other, they would have them meet their families pretty early so that the older members of the family could figure out where their family name stems from and know if they are related or not. Better to know early on!
If a non-local was interested in dating a local, the introduction to the family would still happen pretty early just to get an impression of the newcomer. As Guam is very family-oriented, if things worked out well between the couple, that non-local person would be embraced lovingly by the whole family. Most local families are very emotionally invested in their children/nieces/nephews/grandkids and just want to see them in a happy and healthy relationship.

6. Weight gain - Guam has some of the most delicious cuisine and restaurants, so it's natural to want to indulge in whatever you can when you are visiting. It is also a big community-like culture, so you'll find yourself invited to a lot of events that involve bonding over food. Enjoy your time when visiting, but if you are planning to live on Guam for a longer period, then you might want to be careful of how much to indulge in the local food. It does include a lot of fried foods, starch, and heavy meats so if not eaten in moderation, this can take a toll on your health!

Why I Really Don't Like This Country ????????

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.
