Top 10 Places to Visit in Central Asia and the Caucasus - Silk Road Travel Video (Documentary)

Welcome to Central Asia and the Caucasus, two beautiful regions on the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Often overlooked as travel destinations, the countries here provide some of the most rewarding and unique experiences. From stunning mountain landscapes of the Pamir Highway to historic monasteries in Armenia, from spectacular monuments along the ancient Silk Road to the modern skylines of Baku and Astana.

I traveled through these regions for four months in 2013, and in this short travel documentary I share with you my personal top 10 places to visit. The countries included in the video are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.

The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.

In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.

Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

More than 2,000 years ago, the great trade routes that linked Europe and China opened Central Asia to foreign cultures, customs and religions. MIR's iconic tour, Journey Through Central Asia: The Five 'Stans, is a modern-day caravan on an epic Silk Road journey to five of these exotic countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

01:44 – KAZAKHSTAN
Kazakhstan is the largest and richest of the five 'Stans. We visit the country's former capital, Almaty, known as the Capital of Apples; Zenkov Cathedral; as well as a falcon farm for an up-close look at these beautiful birds used in hunting.

02:38 – KYRGYZSTAN
Mountainous, unspoiled Kyrgyzstan is Central Asia's best-kept secret. We visit Lake Issyk-kul; learn about horses and traditional horse games; visit Burana Tower; and in the country's capital, Bishkek, we listen to a portion of the famous poem, Epic of Manus – with nearly half-a-million verses.

04:42 – TAJIKISTAN
Tajikistan is a country infused with the influence of Persia, Islam, and Russia. We visit the 2,000-year-old city of Khujand; in this old Silk Road town we explore the colorful covered Panjshanbe Bazaar.

05:06 – UZBEKISTAN
Some of the most famous UNESCO-listed Silk Road sights are in Uzbekistan. We visit Osh and Rishtan in Fergana Valley; explore the country's capital, Tashkent; wander through Samarkand, known as the Crossroad of Cultures with Registan Square's blue-tiled mosaics, mosques, and madrassahs; and see Shakhrisabze, birthplace of Tamerlane the Conqueror. Bukhara was an oasis in the desert for Silk Road camel caravans long ago, and still is for modern travelers today. In Khiva, the Old Town called Ichon Qala looks much as it did centuries ago, while Nukus is known for its once-banned avant-garde Soviet art at the Savitsky Museum.

07:56 – TURKMENISTAN
Turkmenistan is a country of tribal culture and camels as well as modern cities and transportation. We visit three UNESCO-listed sites: Khorezm's Kunya Urgench and Kutlug-Timur Minaret, Merv, and the 2,000-year-old city of Nisa. The tour ends in Turkmenistan's capital of Ashgabat, filled with white marble buildings, as well as a nearby visit to an Akhal-Teke horse-breeding farm.

Solo border crossing from Kazakhstan - Silk Road Travel to Uzbekistan

Join my lovely Patreon community for behind-the-scenes content!

After spending a couple of weeks in Kazakhstan, I headed south to Uzbekistan which is historically known as the land of traders and craftsmen.

Overland travel in Central Asia has always been something I’ve been intrigued by, despite the fact that border crossings in this region tend to be unpredictable.

After studying the border crossing map in Central Asia, I decided to enter Uzbekistan via a popular border crossing which connects Shymkent and Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
(Douglas Grimes, MIR Co-Founder and President)
00:00 One of my favorite clients is a Canadian couple that has two Land Rovers. One is driven by the husband and one is driven by the wife. Their first journey was going to be from the China Sea to Paris. Once we started designing the trip, they kept adding things. So by the time we finished that first trip, it was almost a six-month journey.

00:23 It started in China and went up through Xian and around different parts of China that most people don't go to. It crossed over into the Gobi Desert and up around Mongolia, and continued up to Siberia and all the way across Russia and Ukraine, and went through the Baltics.

00:42 By the time we were finished we thought, 'Oh wow! These people have covered everything!' But lo and behold, six to eight months later after they finished that trip and left the Land Rovers sitting in Venice – I think it was – they called me up and said, 'Hey, we're thinking about doing something else. And I said, Well, what about the Balkans – the former Yugoslavia? And he said, Oh, that sounds great!

01:08 So they drove up around and came in to Slovenia. We took them for two-and-a-half months all over the Balkans, and ended up in Budapest, and then it was planning the next trip.

01:21 It's really led from one trip to the other. Fantastic people; we've really enjoyed helping them fulfill this dream and doing these trips that are just the dream trip – really, the dream trip. Driving your own vehicle, and really interacting with people, and slow-paced – you know, not rushed – and doing it on their own terms.”

0:00 “We are here to help people imagine their dream trips – especially to a certain part of the world, and places that people maybe never originally thought that they would go to, or maybe it is on their bucket list. It’s always a lot of fun to work with people and talk to them about what they want to do, what they want to see. And the crazier, the better for MIR – it seems like, anyway!

0:47 We come in as the specialists, the designers. All the logistics, all the accommodations, things that are difficult like visas and that – we are very familiar with that. We’ve been doing it for 30 years. It comes across when people call us. We know these places like the back of our hands.”
