So I headed for the one place I figured I'd find desolation: U.S. Highway 50, a/k/a The Loneliest Road in America! This stretch of highway runs through some of the most sparsely populated parts of the West, and is said to be one of the most desolate areas in the United States. Is it just marketing hype? The Loneliest Road in America - A Two Day Drive From Fallon to Baker
Recently we had a chance to take a trip on Highway 50 in Nevada, the Loneliest Road in America from Fallon, NV to Baker, NV (Great Basin National Park). The Loneliest Road, which follows along the Lincoln Highway and the route of the Pony Express, is one of the most famous drives in the United States. We did the drive over two days in September 2020.
In this video we drive from Fallon to Great Basin National Park, stopping at Sand Mountain, Middlegate Station, Austin, Hickison Petroglyphs, Eureka, Ely, and Great Basin National Park.

In July of 1986, Life magazine dubbed Nevada’s Highway 50 the “Loneliest Road in America.” This is the final video of the three part series featuring the Loneliest Road in America. This video features US-50 east from Eureka to Ely, Nevada. In this video we cross some truly desolate landscape, which is home to around 1 person per square mile.

The Loneliest Road in America: U.S. Route 50 in Nevada
U.S. Route 50 stretches over 3,000 miles from Ocean City, Maryland in the east to Sacramento, California in the West. Originally part of the U.S. Highway system created in 1926, it was a major transportation route until the creation of the Interstate Highway system in 1956. In 1986, Life Magazine nicknamed the Nevada portion of Route 50 “The Loneliest Road in America,” noting that it is “America minus tourist traps” with only three small towns in 400 miles of empty desert.
I wanted to experience “The Loneliest Road in America” for myself, so I drove west to east from Carson City to the small town of Baker near the Nevada-Utah border. While it is true that the route is pretty desolate, its winding mountain passes and long, open stretches of desert valleys tell the story of a time in American history dominated by Manifest Destiny, Westward Expansion and a Gold Rush. U.S. Route 50 parallels the iconic Pony Express route and you can visit the remains of a few outpost stations to this day. Just off Route 50 in the east, in between the cities of Ely and Baker, lies the beautiful Great Basin National Park – home to the mesmerizing Lehman Caves.

When I first decided to go on this US 50 road trip, the main reason was to explore through was it called The Loneliest Road in America, which refers to this section of Nevada. The entire trip up to this point has been a blast, but I was really looking forward to this! And it didn't disappoint! There are only 3 incorporated towns across the over 400 miles of US 50 in Nevada (only one in this video). So much wide open road - which I love! I also had the chance to go a few miles off US 50 to visit a national park and several mining ghost towns. What a fun couple of days in Eastern Nevada!

I Rode The Loneliest Highway In America And It Was Great!
In 1986, Life magazine dubbed Highway 50 the Loneliest Road in America and warned its readers not to travel on it as there were no points of interest.
In looking at the map, highway 50 didn't exactly strike me as motorcycling heaven. With its dead straight roads and desert like conditions, it seems better suited for RVs instead of motorcycles, but I did notice that it was built following the old route of the Pony Express.
And like most motorcyclists, I'd like to think that I could have made it as a cowboy, so I decided to check out this historic highway for myself.

The Loneliest Road in America continues through western Nevada! As we leave Austin the road is definitely very lonely - and beautiful in my opinion. Many years ago there were plenty of mining towns that dotted this landscape, but now it's hard to believe when you actually drive through it. Halfway through this video I stay the night in Fallon, which is the largest town since way back in Colorado. From there we are closing in on California and Lake Tahoe and the population starts to appear. When I started this trip, Nevada was the place I was most excited to visit and it definitely did not disappoint!

We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.

But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.

Highway 50, through Northern Nevada, was named the loneliest road in America by Life Magazine. Since then, it has become an unofficial tourist attraction in the state and a fun road trip if you are looking to experience Nevada's raw beauty. This drive follows the old Pony Express route and the Lincoln Highway as it traverses across the state. My dad and I set out to drive the route over 3 days, and here is our road trip that includes ghost towns, rail yards, ancient trees, and haunted hotels.

Hi friends! ???????? What a journey it's been lately. We have been traveling full-time in our truck camper for the past 8 months now. And for the past three, we have been visiting friends and family. You could say we have been feeling a little exhausted after the holidays, and we couldn't think of a better place to unwind than in the middle of the Nevada desert. So, we did just that–we took our truck camper along the loneliest highway in America (highway 50) to desert dwell, camp, make homemade food, explore new towns, and most importantly, we found some epic hot springs to unwind at and stargaze. Nevada has more public land than majority of the other states here in the US, which means theres tons of opportunities to disperse camp and find yourself surrounded by nature without any neighbors... although we did run into some loud ones (you'll just have to watch the video to find out). After several days of relaxing and adventuring in the desert, we feel ready to roam again in our truck camper! Where to next? You'll have to stay tuned for the next video ???? Bye for now!
