Walking Chinatown And Little Italy in Manhattan NYC

I walk through Chinatown along Mott Street. If you want authentic Chinese food in New York City, you have to come to Chinatown. I like the soup dumplings at Hop Kee. If you want to try crazy ice cream flavors you can get nowhere else in NYC, try The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.
From Mott St, I walk to Canal St and over to Mulberry Street in Little Italy. Here you can get some really good Italian food along with gelato and Italian Desserts.

Little Italy FOOD Tour NYC

In this Little Italy food tour, we visit many generational independently-owned food businesses in the Little Italy neighborhood of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC. Little Italy is considered by many as a tourist destination but we visit shops which are close to or well over one hundred years old and definitely worth a visit even for a native New Yorker.

We start the day with a visit to Alleva Dairy, the oldest Italian cheese shop in America. We go inside this iconic Grand Street #Italianfood shop and check out their homemade mozzarella and watch one of their signature heroes being made. We then visit Piemonte Ravioli right next door to Alleva Dairy and look at their vast selection of homemade pastas made fresh daily and purchase some fresh tomato basil and black pepper fettuccine.

We then walk down Grand Street to the corner of Mott in #littleitaly where we visit Di Palo's Fine Foods. Inside Di Palo's we speak with the third-generation co-owner Sal Di Palo and purchase some of their delicious #foodie Italian cheeses. We also visit E. Rossi & Company, an Italian gift shop located across the street from Piemonte Ravioli, and speak with the third-generation owner Ernest Rossi.

We end the day with a visit to Caffe Reggio on Broome Street at the corner of Mulberry where we not only go inside and see their original interior and extensive selection of homemade Italian pastries, cakes and cookies but sit down with our dog Hudson at their outdoor patio area and enjoy cappuccino, cannolis and their refreshing homemade Italian lemon ice.

Along the way, we see lots of colorful street art including a mural of Audrey Hepburn by Tristan Eaton next to Caffe Roma and a flower mural next to Piemonte Ravioli by Michael De Feo.

New York City Food Tour - A Taste Of Little Italy And Nolita

Our second full day in New York City and we head downtown to NoLIta, ‘North of Little Italy’ for a food tour with Foods of NY.

A good food tour is a great way to get know a place and to visit some hidden restaurants and shops you may probably walk pass when on your own.

We had perfect weather for the walk and thanks to our great guide, Jordan.

These are the highlights of the food tour, there was plenty of food from fresh cakes and chocolate, Pizza, French, South American and Mexican.

Originally the Little Italy area of New York was quite rough but like most cities, gentrification has occurred and now it is full of boutiques and trendy restaurants and bars.
Watch out for the hipsters.

New York’s Little Italy is the area where Martin Scorsese grew up and got the inspiration for many of his films. We actually pass his childhood home on 239 Elizabeth Street during the tour.

Chinatown via Little Italy - a night out in New York

Whilst in New York in early 2019 we caught up with family friends from home town and headed out to explore Chinatown. We heard about a amazing little dumpling place on a side street so we headed there to start the evening. We ate dumplings on the sidewalk before deciding to find a restaurant for dinner. To finish off, we walked to Little Italy to Ferrara Bakery & Cafe to end the night with Cannoli.

Somehow we found ourselves returning to our hotels in midtown in the back of a old black stretch Limo. It's a long story how we managed to find the car, but a funny adventure all the same.

Such a fun great night out.

LITTLE ITALY, NEW YORK Then and Now 7-4-2014 HD 1080p

Some images of old Little Italy were from the internet and some info was from Wikipedia.
Little Italy on Mulberry street used to extend as far south as Worth Street, as far north as Kenmare St, as far west as La Fayette and as far east as Bowery. It is now only 4 blocks on Mulberry Street and Grant Street..
After WWII many residents began moving to Brooklyn and Staten Island in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. Chinese immigrants became an increased presence after the U.S. immigration of 1965 removed immigration restrictions. In 2004 Bill Tonelli New York magazine said You can go back 30 years and find newspaper clips chronicling the expansion of Chinatown and mourning the loss of Little Italy.
In 1910 Little Italy had almost 10,000 Italians; that was the peak of the community's Italian population.
Powerful members of the Italian Mafia operated in Little Italy, they were very active in the 1970's when we lived there for 12 years, today we did not see anyone that looked like a wise guy!. The area is currently referred to as Little Italy more out of nostalgia than as a reflection of a true ethnic population. We still heard Italian spoken in the street, some might be tourists from Italy, a few waiters we saw looked Italian and they wore bow ties.
Umberto's Clam House is an Italian seafood restaurant located at 132 Mulberry Street in Little Italy in (New York City) (north of its original site). Umberto's became known for its tasty dishes of calamari, scungilli, and mussels, but initially became prominent, weeks after opening, for being the site of one of the more sensational Mafia murders in New York City in recent history. The restaurant was founded and is owned by members of the Ianniello family. Two months after opening, on April 7, 1972, New York gangster Joe Gallo was shot and killed at the eatery.
In 1996, the restaurant was closed due to lack of funds and the building was sold, but it reopened in 2000 in a new location, two blocks north of the original site. Today, the space formerly occupied by Umberto Clam House is occupied by Italian restaurant Da Gennaro.
Ferrara Bakery and Cafe was established in 1892 by Antonio Ferrara. Ferrara has remained a family owned business since its inception and is operated at its original location on 195 Grand Street. The 1st location in this movie is a bakery and a small cafe on Mulberry street, the 2nd one shown is a sit down bakery and gelato restaurant.
We were pleasantly surprised on the way back to our hotel, the Millenium Hilton, to catch a unique phenomenom, the Manhattanhenge, sometimes referred to as the Manhattan Solstice - is an event during which the setting sun is aligned with the east--west streets of the main street grid of Manhattan.
