Inside Papua New Guinea’s Ocean Slum (living on trash)

We went inside Papua New Guineas Ocean slum where residents live on stilt villages with trash underneath them. Located in Port Moresby which was described as the worst capital city to live in by The Guardian. To get to the houses the walkways are falling apart and people often fall through into the trash. Yet our experience there was nothing but friendly people and kids who wanted us to take photos with them.

Living in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

A rough compilation of clips taken by me over a period of two months in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Before I traveled to PNG from the USA, I searched YouTube for anything I could watch about contemporary life in Papua New Guinea, and I noticed there wasn't a whole lot of content available. This video isn't professional, but maybe it'll give you a small insight of what to expect in Port Moresby. Or simply satisfy your curiosity!

Papua New Guinea - My Good And Bad Experience in Country #22 To Visit All UN Recognized Countries

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in Papua New Guinea which is my country #22 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. I had mixed feelings while travelling in Papua New Guinea. Despite my mixed feelings, I would definitely like to return to that country one day and explore the island or Rabaul and the autonomous region of Bougainville.

To everyone watching this video; I hope you like it, and i hope that it inspires you. Forces you to hope that there’s still some amazing left in Port Moresby, and in this country.

To all my Papua New Guinean brothers and sisters; Happy 44th Independence. Let’s all agree to act our age yeah?

Modern Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Capital city of Papua New Guinea is growing! During the time of the former prime minister, Peter O’Neil, he initiated a lot of projects that change the face of Port Moresby. Couple skyscrapers are still under construction and are expected to be completed soon.

Port Moresby is not a cheap place to live for foreigners! That is if you wanna live a life like the first world: Having access to nice home, health care, good food. However, majority of the population in the city lives in the settlements, predominantly a life below the poverty line. They depend on informal economy, but the Covid 19 has hit hard when they were forced to discontinue such.

When my trip to Papua New Guinea was approved to happen, I honestly had no idea what to expect.

The first things that came to mind were tribes painted and dressed in traditional wear, and climbing through thick jungles. Since I was there as an ambassador to an NGO, I also expected to be mostly in meetings. I subconsciously hoped there would be some nice beaches, but since I hadn’t seen much posted about that, I didn’t think much about it.

Then, after meeting with the team members at @pngtribalfoundation, and hearing how they’re helping others, and what kind of help I could do as an influencer, I was taken to Duke of York Islands, where my mind was absolutely blown, and my mission became clear!

Imagine me not knowing an island-hopping tour was planned, complete with an unexpected visit from a hundred dolphins!!

I remember thinking “THIS is what people need to see and think of when they hear ‘Papua New Guinea’, not ‘It’s Dangerous’”. And so here we are ????

Every country has danger and safety issues. You all probably know this already, but I’m more scared to be in USA than the majority of countries I go to, including PNG. So let’s stop associating Papua New Guinea with danger, and start to highlight its incredible beauty as well, shall we?

What countries have you visited that everyone said was dangerous and turned out to be incredible?

Also, fun fact! If you look closely, the kids where I was cliff jumping have mostly blond hair, and that is a common gene in this area of PNG! They also looked very concerned after I jumped since there was only a small clearing amongst the coral (prob the most “danger” I had the whole trip ????????)

For difficult logistical purposes, I still only recommend going to PNG with an established company like PNG Tribal Foundation. More info on my blog!

Goroka Highlands | My Papua New Guinea Experience Part 2

Monika Mixova travelled solo and on low budget to Papua New Guinea in 2014 to meet local tribes and learn about their culture, drug addiction, betel nut effects and cannibalism. In part two she is story telling how did she fly to Goroka Highlands with no plan where to sleep and met a helicopter engineer on the airport in Port Moresby. She explains why is Goroka dangerous and how much was teh pilot worried, how did she go out shopping in Goroka and where did she get contact for papua tribe people which will take her to the jungle.
The first episode was about one week on Fisherman's Island with the locals, learning pidgin, learning how to chew betel nut.
She is talking about her experience with modesty and kindness of local people, how is their every day life affected by civilisation and how there is more tourists travelling to Papua New Guinea now.
This is an honest story of a solo travelling white young woman.
In part two, she is sharing photos from Goroka, Highlands taken in 2014.

Amazing Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Amazing Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, as seen at Ela Beach on Friday, November 25, 2022.
Port Moresby is an amazing and beautiful city, however, it has only been the behaviour of a minority that is tarnishing its name.
However, the good and law-abiding people of Port Moresby continue to live and work in this city, which we call our home.
It is my hope and prayer that we all work together towards creating a better Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea for all of us, now and into the future.
