Having spent 3 weeks in Belarus, I continued my journey to the Far East region. A spark of curiosity has led me to travel to these less visited regions. I was interested in gently peeling away the layers of Belarus and connecting more deeply with the people. By taking the time to observe, it allows me to understand the culture more and have a greater appreciation of the different human stories I hear on the road.
On today’s journey, I took a small van from Vitebsk, south through the countryside to Mogilev before continuing Southeast to my next destination, Gomel. I walked around the city, visited another Lenin monument and stumbled upon a traditional market. I then headed out to a smaller town that was greatly affected by the Chernobyl disaster and got to experience a traditional weaving method before being helped by a bunch of teenagers while trying to return home.

Having stayed in multiple different villages on my previous travels, I was inspired to do the same in Belarus. I reached out to several Belarusians and got the wonderful opportunity to visit Krupitsa village after meeting Ira through Couchsurfing. Ira was so excited to invite me to come and stay with her parents and her son. I was excited to see life in the countryside and got lucky to be present during Ira’s father's birthday.

???????? With reports that the city of Kyiv was soon to be closed off I decided the best thing to do was to join the crowds and leave for the border before being stuck. Whilst it was a sad to see the people leaving their homes behind and taking their kids and pets with them towards an uncertain future it also showed the best of the people. Spirits were high, nobody panicked, people shared food and drinks with each other. It was humbling to be a part of it.

In an effort to feed Ukrainian civilians in the border town of Kozacha Lopan' which is just a few miles from Belgorod Oblast in Russia, we drove into the danger zone of a previously occupied area of Ukraine to deliver soup and bread.

As I was looking at the Belarus map during my research, the North and Far East region was something that intrigued me. These are regions that many tourists don’t visit and pay attention to. I was also curious to see what the people and places are like in areas close to the borders.
I took a 3-hour high-speed train from Minsk for 16 Belarusian Rubles. Prior to my departure, I managed to get in touch with Vitali whom I found through Couchsurfing. Despite our language barriers, Vitali was very excited to show me his hometown.
Being one of the oldest cities in Belarus, Vitebsk is believed to be found in 974 by the Princess Olga of Kiev and has been mentioned in ancient Russian chronicles since the 11th century.
This Northernmost regional city has an advantageous geographical location as it is located at the crossroads of the most important trade between Russia, Baltic states, Ukraine, Central and Western Europe.

As we drove through eastern Poland into the border city of Medyka, we passed miles and miles of parked semi trucks, and them many more miles of parked passenger vehicles on the side of the highway.
The trucks are hauling supplies into Ukraine.
We were told by local officials that the passenger cars are full of people from Ukraine who'd left, and are now choosing to drive back home. Some want to evacuate other family members or move belongings, while some thought life as a refugee abroad was more difficult than facing the Russian invasion at home.
Crossing the border in a vehicle can take a day or more at this checkpoint.

Today we arrived in the village - Ust-Anzas. This remote village is located in the Tashtagol region. The population is approximately 100 people.
There are Shors live. This is the indigenous people of Russia. There are very few of them left and these people are threatened with complete extinction. In total, there are 13,000 Shors left on Earth. And most of them live on the territory of Mountain Shoria. Kemerovo region of Russia.
Not far from Ust Anzas there are such villages as: Ust Azas, Za-Mrasu, Chazy-Bug (up the river Mrasu); Far Kezek, Near Kezek, Cheley and the village of Parushka (down the Mrasu River). There are no roads to these villages, so many of them are already abandoned.
For a long time, taiga people lived without electricity, gas, communications and roads. And only in 2019, the authorities provided every house with solar panels. Now the locals have refrigerators and TVs in their homes. But still there is no cellular communication and the Internet. There is no school. In September, children are sent to a boarding school in Tashtagol. And they come to their parents only for the holidays. It was such a time that we found them in this amazing village.
Mountain Shoria (Shorsk. Taglyg Shor) is a mountain-taiga region located in the southern part of the Kemerovo region at the junction of Altai, Sayan and Kuznetsk Alatau. The region can conditionally be attributed to the Altai mountain system.
Mountain Shoria got its name from the indigenous people - the Shors.

The Journey Is Over ????????
This journey that started for me aged 17 in Anna’s Russian class has now come to an end. I have been officially banned from Russia for a period of three years. What great memories were created. From the villages of the Komi republic to the mountains of Dagestan, to the Siberian forests and Baikal, we have experienced so many adventures. I'll always remember the amazing Russian people I met with great fondness but it's time to to bring the curtain down.

Crossing the Poland-Ukraine border into Lviv
After 9 weeks in the wonderful country of Poland, it was time to head to Ukraine for my first ever visit. But first, I had to cross the Rava-Ruska – Hrebenne land border. Reviews on Google Maps didn't fill me with confidence withh reports of having to wait up to 10 hours to get through! However, this was during Covid times and less people were travelling so it wouldn't be THAT bad, right?
Once I reached Ukraine, I headed to the city of Lviv where I would begin my Ukrainian adventure.

After 18 months of a life on pause, thanks to the sodding corona virus, and endless hours on Google Maps checking out all the places I want to visit, the time has finally arrived to begin my travels in Europe.
Starting in Berlin, I plan to travel east as far as Georgia and taking in pretty much all of the countries in between.

Situation at UKRAINE ???????? Hungarian???????? Border
Since the start of Russia-Ukraine fighting, the news channel I have been watching are just showing situation at the Poland border, but Ukraine also shares its border with Slovakia as well as Hungary in the EU.
