The Highest Country in the World - Lesotho| South Africa Day 9

9/23/18 We crossed from South Africa into the country of Lesotho. We stopped to buy some food and water at the Pick N Pay mall location in Maseru and also grabbed some Barcelos to go. The roads to the Ha Kome caves were too questionable, so we ended up just going to get checked in at our airbnb. Our host literally hopped in the car with us, and we all went to see the Subeng Dinosaur Footprints. I was definitely feeling overwhelmed by the end of the day!

Ha Kome Cave Houses in Teyateyaneng, Lesotho

The Kome Caves are a group of cave dwellings made out of mud in the district of Berea, Lesotho 25 km east of Teyateyaneng. The caves are still inhabited by the descendants of the original people who built the caves. The site has been classified as a National Heritage Site.
The Ha Kome Cave Village is situated at Pulane area in Berea district. The caves were a hideout for the Basia and one Bataung clans during the Lifaqane Wars and cannibalism. The cave is still inhabited by their descendants to this day. There are also faded San paintings in the cave which indicates that the San also occupied the cave some time prior to their arrival albeit briefly.

The Kome Crafts and Information Office that is about 500 metres up the road from the caves houses locally-made crafts including crafts from Lesotho Mountain Crafts in Teyateyaneng, 21 km from the centre. You will also find a tuck shop and a small café at the centre.

At the Kome Crafts and Information Centre you can have picnic and even strike up a barbecue/braai at one of its many stands. The helpful staff at the centre can help you organise pony treks around the Pulane area and even assist you with guided tours of the Kome Cave Village. Catering is available upon request. Camping is permitted but there aren't any shower facilities.

A high clearance vehicle is recommended if you driving down to the centre and sensible footwear for the the trip to the cave dwellings.

Other places of historical significance near the Ha Kome cave dwellings are the Bokhopa pinnacle where cannibals waylaid their grass robes to trap the passersby and a large overhang where that inhabited in Malimong (Place of the cannibals).

Visit the Cave Dwellings of Ha Kome Village

Visit the Cave Dwellings of Ha Kome Village - An episode of series: The 15 Best Things to Do in Lesotho.
For an insight into Lesotho’s human history, pay a visit to Ha Kome Village near the western town of Teyateyaneng. Here, descendants of the country’s Basia tribe continue to live in the cave dwellings in which their ancestors first sought refuge during the Lifaqane Wars of the early 19th century. Known as Mfecane in South Africa, this period saw widespread conflict between the tribes of Southern Africa, with several wiped out completely and others in Lesotho driven to cannibalism by drought and famine. For more information, book a guided tour of the cave dwellings at the Kome Crafts and Information Center. .

These Women Live in Caves in LESOTHO

Would you believe me if I told you that 3 elderly women have been living in a cave since the 1940s, inside of tiny houses that are made of cow manure in Lesotho?

I found this hidden community somewhere in the middle of Lesotho…. The journey took us hours and hours of driving up steep dirt roads, picking up a hitchhiker who helped give us directions, and running into little boys who were herding hundreds of sheep across the open plains. Lesotho is full of surprises!

The 3 women were ecstatic when we visited them, and it was a very humbling experience to witness their lifestyle overall. This is just another example where I realize that money can’t buy happiness.

Lesotho Daily Life

Lesotho (le-soo-too), officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. The first settlers were Bantu speaking people who called themselves the Basotho.

Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, and easily accessible from Johannesburg, Lesotho is a vastly underrated tourist destination. In comparison to South Africa, Lesotho's Basotho people are unique in culture, along with the highland terrain, which is a topographical extreme. The country's hospitable mountain lodges and trading posts will give travelers a refreshing perspective of Southern Africa.

Lesotho is essentially an alpine country, where villagers on horseback in multi-coloured balaclavas and blankets tread precipitous terrain. The hiking and trekking is often made on a famed Basotho pony, in order to enjoy the world class infrastructure of its three stunning national parks.

The 1000m-high lowlands offer craft shopping and sights, but don't miss a trip to the southern, central or northeastern highlands, where streams traverse ancient ground where dinosaurs flourished.

From Lesotho, we journey to a nearby fishing village just beyond the kingdom's peripheries, near Johannesburg.

Ancient homes(houses) | Life in past(caves) | Old lifestyle |Mountain caves of Umarzai Kpk

The old lifestyle was based on simple houses like caves in mountains. Some of these caves were natural while some were made by people. Life was simple and people used to make caves in ancient times to be used as shelters just like modern houses. This video is made on old and ancient caves which shows life in the past

Lesotho - Drakensberge

Urlaub in Lesotho - Diashow.
