Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.

**A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly**

Ilulissat Icefjord - Large iceberg breaking over

Once in a life time experience...The last day before returning home this huge iceberg cracked right in front us.

We were quite baffled so please disregard the at times stupid commentary ;-)

Incredible GLACIER CALVING & TSUNAMI WAVE Caught On Camera! | Glacier Wall Collapse (Greenland)

Huge Icebergs collapsing and breaking from the Ilulissat Glacier are often up to 3,000 feet in height (1,000 meter) and are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. Subscribe for more ►

Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. The Ilulissat Icefjord drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces around 10% of all Greenland icebergs. Some 35 billion tonnes of icebergs calve off and pass out of the fjord every year (Find out more here: In the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 0.4 inches (11 millimeters) to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year (Find out more here:

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone (Find out more here:

About this video: Incredible glacier calving & tsunami wave caught on camera
This video is showing huge icebergs flipping over and subsequently a series of multiple iceberg and glacier wall collapses. Due to the enormous amount of ice falling into the water, the glacier calving event even triggered a series of mini-tsunami waves up to 16 feet in height (5 m) breaking on the shore.

We almost DIED in Spencer Glacier calving - Alaska 2019

My buddy Josh (@steeringsouth) and I rode the Alaska Railroad out to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and tent camped over night at Spencer Glacier. We went kayaking in the glacier bay in our Intex K2 Explorer kayaks and witnessed a MASSIVE event as a chunk of a glacier calved about 50 foot from us and created a 10-12 foot wave. We were pelted with chunks of flying ice and buckets of water. To say we are lucky to be alive is an understatement. It was an absolutely stunning phenomenon to witness (and survive) . We learned our lesson and will give glaciers the space they deserve next time we are out exploring. Footage captured using GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Glacier Calving | Polarbears SHOCKED By HUGE COLLAPSE Next To Them!

Symbolic moment for global warming caught on camera when a huge iceberg is breaking off a melting glacier in Svalbard, Norway while a polar bear mommy and her cub are playing in the snow right in front of it! Subscribe for more ►

The Svalbard glaciers cover 6% of the worldwide glacier area outside of Greenland and Antarctica, and many of them have been melting rapidly since the 1980s due to global warming. It is estimated that they could raise the sea level by 1,7 cm once melted completely. This is an archive clip now released in connection with the Glasgow climate change conference.

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. (Find out more here:

HUGE ICEBERGS FROM TITANIC DISASTER LOCATION – In Frigid North Atlantic Ocean

CHASING ICEBERGS IN TITANIC DISASTER LOCATION – In Frigid North Atlantic Ocean
Every single late spring and early summer there is cumulating of icebergs in Iceberg Alley – nearow strait between Newfoundland and Labrador. Whatever is access of capacity of the strait floating ice is passing North coast of Newfoundland while carrying hungry polar bear to the coast of Newfoundland to major displease of local inhabitancy.
While some of the icebergs are really HUGE they are not only passing coast of Newfoundland but advancing further South first to the infamous location where Titanic met its destiny and some of them are advancing even further South all the way to Bermuda and in rare cases even to The Bahamas where tourist on the beaches were surprise when large residual chunk of iceberg landed right next to them.

Icebergs are edges of glaciers that have broken off and slipped into the ocean. Roughly 90% of icebergs seen off Newfoundland and Labrador come from the glaciers of western Greenland – mainly from Ilulissat Fjord/Glacier, while the rest come from glaciers in Canada's Arctic.
Their sheer size will amaze you, and that's without seeing the ninety-percent of iceberg still hidden below the surface of the ocean.

Icebergs are so plentiful around these parts, we actually put them to good use. You can drink it straight, as in Berg water, or in spirits like Iceberg Vodka, Gin, and Rum. Don’t forget the popular Iceberg Beer.

However Icebergs are not to be underestimated. In 1912, only 400 miles from Newfoundland’s coast, one of the icebergs like these sank the infamous Titanic.

Giant +70M Iceberg BREAKING OFF Glacier | Glacier Wall Collapse

Spectacular capture of a large iceberg breaking off the glacier 'Perito Moreno' in Argentina. Subscribe for more ►
In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier is one of Argentina's most beautiful natural wonders, the colors and shapes of the ice remind of a piece of art of Gaudi. The glacier itself is about 5 km (3.1 mi) wide and has an average height of 74 m (240 ft) above the surface of the water. The ice field of the Glacier Perito Moreno is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.

Despite that most of the innumerable glaciers worldwide are retreating as a result of global warming and climate change, one of the few unusual glaciers that maintains a state of equilibrium is the Perito Moreno glacier, because it continues to accumulate mass at a rate similar to that of its loss (

Antarctica: Massive 93 Mile Long Iceberg (A68A) From Larsen Ice Shelf

(Filmed before Pandemic)

I think that only by a fly-over can anyone get the scale of this humungous iceberg. Referred to as A-68A, this berg is bigger than the State of Delaware and said to weigh over weighing one trillion tons!

It broke off the Larsen Ice Shelf in 2017 and is slowly drifting North (like my favorite childhood book, Chilly, Willy, the Penguin). We slowly sail past for what seems like forever while whales blow in all directions. For latest update, visit

Ilulissat Icefjord World Heritage Site Greenland

Ilulissat is situated in Disko Bay at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord which was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. There are three designated hiking trails of varying duration and difficulty in the Illulisat Icefjord (Ilulissat Kangerlua) each providing fabulous opportunities to hike along the edge of the fjord and get stupendous views of a massive number of icebergs that have calved from the most active glacier in the world: Sermeq Kujalleq. We followed the blue route that takes you along a boardwalk past the old settlement of Semermuit and then follows the bare rocky coast above the fjord. We then joined the red route that took us back to the beginning of the boardwalk, which takes about a couple of hours. From here it's an easy 20 minutes walk back into the town, making this an ideal half day activity for those who have come into Ilulissat on a cruise ship.
