Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

Enjoy the video!

A Journey through Rural Lesotho | Travel Documentary

Lesotho Kingdom in the Sky. On this episode of Adventure Calls we travel through Rural Lesotho in a rented 4WD Nissan which had been outfitted for true adventure. We would go horse trekking deep in the Lesotho mountains, visit one of the world tallest waterfalls and drive through the roughest terrains imaginable towards South Africa. We also got an opportunity to donate school materials which was donated by fans, friends and family.

You can learn more about the Malealea Development Trust here where you can also donate to those in need

Lesotho was our very first travel documentary that we filmed.

Lesotho is a fantastic place to visit and a place we highly recommend. If you stay longer and plan to drive around the more rural areas you should highly consider bringing or renting a good 4WD car (the cheapest and easiest option is in Johannesburg, South Africa). Many places are inaccessible without.

We hope you will enjoy this video and please subscribe to our channel for more adventures around the world. Please leave any comments and questions below. We love to interact with our viewers :)

A huge thanks to Darren Lowe for composing our theme music tracks. Fantastic job my friend.

Thanks to Marconi De Morais for helping with the final audio.

Travel Guide to Lesotho

Travel Guide to Lesotho

►Read the blog:

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

Best Places to Visit in Lesotho

Best Places to Visit in Lesotho

There are few countries in the southern reaches of Africa as off-the-beaten-track as little Lesotho. Why? Well, for starters, it’s Landlocked and entirely encompassed by the popular lands of South Africa the country, meaning it’s not exactly the easiest place to get to. And then there’s its veneer, spiked for the most part by impenetrable mountains of stark rock and sweeping plateaus of dusty sandstone – not the easiest place to navigate! But with Lesotho’s difficulties so too come its beauties.

The backcountry is wild and primeval. Sweeping grass plains are broken only by the occasional peppering of thatched San villages. The great mountain rivers are only just being tamed by even greater mountain dams. There are awesome waterfalls or valley panoramas around every corner, and the trekking – well, the trekking is simply to-die-for!

Discover Lesotho - Abelanang Basotho Teyateyaneng

In this episode of Discover Lesotho Mapule takes us to Teyateyaneng (T.Y.) Handicrafts that create memorable traditional Lesotho crafts. Local weaving groups formed Abelanang Basotho which means lets share and they take the product to market for the weavers. They use local mohair from the farmers in the area and they work it all the way to the final product. Every product is done passionately by hand and they include wall hangings, tapestries, rugs, scrafs and cushion covers to mention a few. All of the products tell a story.

Lesotho is Crazy Beautiful

I'm on Instagram at

Lesotho is crazy spectacular. It's just one of those countries that suits me. It's full of incredible mountains, and lots of rugged landscape. There's this wild freedom to the country that just grabbed me right away.

But, Lesotho is also a challenge; especially as a photographer. There are so many amazing things to see and photograph in the country, but it's a bit of a challenge finding ways to properly photograph them. There's very little tourism infrastructure, and even the roads don't really have places that you can safely pull over to make photos.

Still, there is this energy to Lesotho that I really love. It has me back to feeling really good about travel. It has my spirits back up, and has me excited to explore. Lesotho even has me excited for a bit of mis-adventure, and I got some. On my second day driving around, I smashed into a rock and bent the rim of my tire. Luckily, I got some help and eventually continued on my way.

I ended the day at a place in Lesotho called Semonkong. I came here to photograph a waterfall called Maletsunyane. It's the number one reason I came to the country, and though it would be even more spectacular if the water levels were higher, it's still impressive.

Lesotho 2017

Over the Thanksgiving break we took a trip to Malealea Lodge in Lesotho. This video show are overnight pony trek to a remote village up in the mountains.

Lesotho - Drakensberge

Urlaub in Lesotho - Diashow.

Lesotho Village Life

Lesotho is an African country who's boarders are completely surrounded by South Africa. The traditional rural culture is strong amongst its citizens who prefer to live in village clusters on the country's vast mountains. The citizens are mainly agriculturalists; they cultivate crops and herbs to live off of as well as sell in markets. Animals are kept in small farms and used as methods of transportation, assistance with cultivation of crops, and ultimately income.

Music is important to Lesotho culture, and groups of people will come together to sing and play instruments at various community gatherings such as religious gatherings or community festivals. As well as music, Les Grandes Personnes, or the giant marionette puppets, can be seen at festivals, street performances, marching in parades, or even on the world stage.

About Me //
I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more.

Lesotho is a country in Southern Africa. Known as the Kingdom in the Sky because of its lofty altitude — it has the highest lowest point of any country in the world (1400m) and is the only country to be entirely above 1000m! Lesotho is totally surrounded by South Africa and is a fantastic adventure holiday destination.
