Košice is a very beautiful city in Europe, the largest city in Eastern Slovakia and the City of Gold, known for the largest hoards of gold ever found anywhere. In this Slovakia travel video, I'm going on a walking tour through this very beautiful city in Europe which has quickly become my favorite city in Slovakia. It's a very beautiful city, one of the great cities in Europe and seems to be away from big tourist routes. It's really just a great place to see in Eastern Europe.
But Košice is not only a nice place in Eastern Europe and central Europe. Being the economic and cultural centre of Eastern Slovakia, Košice is also an important industrial hub for the entire country. In 2013 Košice was even the prestigious European Capital of Culture, together with Marseille in France.
Are you looking for the best Europe travel ideas? Košice offers the most historic buildings in Slovakia and some of the best historic sites in Eastern Europe. If you are looking for a church to visit, St. Elisabeth Cathedral is definitely among the best churches to see in Eastern Europe. Košice, this beautiful city in Slovakia, is situated on the river Hornád near the border with Hungary. With a population of approximately 240,000, Košice is the second-largest city in Slovakia, after the capital Bratislava.

Kosice, the 2nd largest city in Slovakia, will surprise you with its architecture which is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. You cannot miss the Main street, which is full of aristocratic palaces, Catholic churches, medieval houses as well as boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. Number 1 must-see place is St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia. The splendid State Theatre, built in 1788 in neo-baroque style, is for all the lovers of drama, ballet and opera. Do not miss Slavia Café, the fanciest restaurant in the city. New Orthodox Synagogue built in 1927 is a reminder of one of the largest Jewish communities in Slovakia before 2 WW. During the day you can visit many of cities galleries and museums while in the evening you can enjoy nightlife with plenty of bars and restaurants. The city is known as the first town in Europe to be granted its own coat-of-arms.

Slovakia has a long and varied history and contains Europe’s youngest capital city and also its highest mountain range, as well as cultural masterpieces and unspoiled nature. Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. Surrounded by the City Hall and several palaces, it is like being taken back in time into a rich and glorious past. On the Danube’s Slovakian side, and to the east, is the town of Komárno. In the old urban market square a Miniature Europe with forty five buildings has, in recent years, come into existence. Towers, domes, arcades, half-timbered buildings and woodcarvings frame the square at whose centre is the Millennium Fountain. It is a unique mixture of architecture that signifies the common culture of European countries. Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of the almost hidden and forgotten Vlkolĺnec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today it is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Further north is Terchová, birthplace of Slovakia’s national hero, Juraj Jánošík. The legendary robber chief has an exhibition dedicated to him in which the living conditions and customs of that time are on display. The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe. A magnificent mountain landscape with rocky mountains and many lakes. In 1947, the National Park of the same name was founded. Slovakia is a land of fortresses, castles and cities that date from the Middle Ages and, despite its many mountain regions, a southern-influenced way of life.

The ancient royal city of Košice was once the centre of Northern Hungary and is today located in eastern Slovakia. In the fourteenth century it was granted many privileges and became a city of goldsmiths and bell-founders and also an important trading city. The Gothic Saint Elizabeth Cathedral characterises the architectural ensemble of the Old Town. It was named after the Hungarian king's daughter, Elisabeth, who was married to the Thuringian landgrave, Ludwig The Fourth, and who lived on the Wartburg. From 1380, and influenced by French architecture, the construction of the cathedral took a hundred and thirty years to complete. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century, and in corresponding spirit, that it was radically adapted according to Neo Gothic design. In the middle of a large market place, playful water fountains entertain beneath shady trees. In time with the music, the water jets perform balletic movements that never fail to attract many onlookers. Next, a freestanding carillon that has twenty two bells which ring out hourly with the melodies of east Slovakian folk songs. The East-Slovakian Museum is one of Slovakia’s oldest museums and contains the history of the city and surrounding area. It is also where the Golden Treasure Of Košice can be admired in full: almost three thousand gold coins from eighty one European mints dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries, plus a Renaissance gold chain. Košice became a powerful centre of both trade and culture and one of the largest and most prosperous cities of mediaeval times.

Kosice (Kassa), Slovakia, Travel Video | We Travel
Kosice, or Kassa in Hungarian, is the second-largest city of Slovakia and the centre of East Slovakia. It has a rich history and culture; it used to be an important industrial, commercial, cultural and educational centre of the East-Slovakian region.
The most famous buildings of Kosice can be found on its characteristic, upland, spool-shaped main street and square. The main square is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings and is bustling with life and energy.
Tourists who want to familiarize themselves a bit more with the history of East-Slovakia should visit the East-Slovakia Museum, where a rich architectural, ethnographical and scientific collection provides the visitor with the chance to find out more about the past of the region.
The St Elisabeth Cathedral can be found in the middle of the Main square.
The sculptures of the cathedral portray the Hungarian saints and this is where prince Francois II Rákóczi lies since 1906. South of the cathedral we can see the Saint Michael chapel built in the 1340s. 17 old tombstones can be found in the Gothic-style cemetery chapel and partially original murals can be seen on the inside.
The 45-metre Orbán tower looms on the northern side and was built to replace the red tower that stood there previously. The tower also houses a wax museum that shows the famous people of Kosice.
We can find really tasty and quality specialities in the shops. The National theatre also stands in the Main Square.

Košice / Slovakia is a city the East of the country, close to the Hungarian border. Kosice is the second largest city of Slovakia (after the capital Bratislava) with a population of around 240,000. Its location far away from other big tourist favourites makes it less visited by international tourists. Bratislava is close to Vienna and Budapest .We arrive in Kosice from Miskolc / Hungary.
Our walking tour of Kosice starts at The Singing Fountain (Spievajúca fontána). We soon head to the main square which is home to two Gothic churches: the St. Elisabeth Cathedral and the 14th-century St. Michael Chapel. We walk around the city center and head south first before we walk to the northern end of the inner city. It's more quiet there so after a round we get back to the city center.
On this evening we have time to see the Crafts lane and the Jakabov palác on our way back to our starting point. After 1h 10m we finish our walking tour of Kosice at the St. Elisabeth Cathedral.
