Jamaica North South Highway, Kingston to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
The Highway 2000 construction project was initialized by Government of Jamaica (former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson) in September 1999. The main objective of this project was to upgrade Jamaica's infrastructure, provide economic opportunities for growth and create jobs. The Project is a public-private partnership structured to maximize operational efficiency and minimize costs. The project is still ongoing, with the direct link to Montego Bay yet to be determined.
Notably, the intention of connecting Jamaica via such a comprehensive highway system, was first expressed and clearly defined in the Jamaican Transportation Survey of 1968/69; as a matter of fact, much of the current Highway 2000 alignments were proposed and defined therein, including the phase 1, East-West Leg and Portmore Causeway, phase 2, North-South Leg as well as a proposal to connect the East-West Leg to Montego Bay.
The proposed highway system was also included and adopted in the National Physical Plan for Jamaica 1970-90 with suggestions to have an alternate North-South Leg from May Pen to Discovery Bay as opposed to the one actually constructed (at present) from Caymanas to Ocho Rios. The NPP was a non-partisan Plan for Jamaica, first conducted under the United Nations Special Fund Project Assistance in Physical Planning.
The Plan was drafted by the then Town Planning Department (now NEPA) of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Jamaica, and vetted by the then Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer ON OJ, as well as the Minister of Finance and Planning, the Most Honourable Edward Philip George Seaga ON.

Traveling via the Jamaica North-South Highway (JNSH) is a stress free way to travel. It is a four lane controlled-access tolled motorway with fully graded separated interchanges and intersections built according to modern international standards. The highway connects the capital Kingston to the town of Ocho Rios, passing through St. Catherine.
The start of the highway is near the Caymanas Economic Zone which connects with the Mandela Highway. The North-South toll road passes through Spanish Town, Bog Walk, Linstead, Ewarton, Moneague, Golden Grove, and Ocho Rios; terminating in Mammee Bay, which is east of St. Ann’s Bay and west of Ocho Rios.
The JNSH consists of three (3) Sections:
SECTION 1:Caymanas, Kingston to Linstead, St. Catherine
SECTION 2:Linstead, St. Catherine to Moneague, St. Ann.
SECTION 3:Moneague to Mammee Bay, St. Ann

Currently, the JNSHC utilizes the following payment options:

E-Pass/ On-Board Unit (OBU)
Each toll plaza is designed with an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane to allow commercial users and other motoristsuninterrupted passage onto the motorwaywith their e-pass.
This is used by the JNSHC to reduce the need to have cash used while travelling on the Toll Road. E-Pass/OBU can be purchased at our Caymanas, Angels and Mamme Bay Toll Plazas.
Future Payment Method
Motorists are issued a card with vehicle-class and point of entry information, upon entering the toll road at the toll plaza. At the point of exit, motorists are required to hand over the card to the toll collector, where they will be informed of the amount to pay. Total payment is calculated based on distance traveled, which is the unit rate per kilometer (km) and the classification of their vehicle.
VEHICLE CLASSIFICATION
The JNSH classifies vehicles in four classes:
Class 1: Height not exceeding 1.7 metres and length not exceeding 5.5
Class 2: Greater than 1.7 metres high: length less than 5.5 metre or less than 1.7 high and greater than 5.5 long
Class 3: Greater than 1.7 metres high: length greater than 5.5 metres
Class 4: Two-wheeled or Three-wheel bikes

The highway's North-South Leg begins in St. Ann at the Mammee Bay interchange which links T3 with the Northern Coastal Highway (which links Mammee Bay/Ocho Rios with Montego Bay). The highway cuts through the interior of the parish and has 2 additional interchanges (Lydford and Unity Valley) which have tolled on/off ramps and a rest stop at Unity Valley. The highway then transitions into St. Catherine.
