Driving from Dingle down to Killarney, where we walk the main streets and take a horse carriage ride passing one of the lakes of Killarney. Then on driving towards Kinsale in the south of Ireland. It's one of the prettiest parts of the country.

Killarney is most famous for its three lakes, and the town itself is quite attractive. Killarney is the nation's most popular destination after Dublin. People are drawn here primarily for the natural beauties around in the National Park, but the town itself has developed into a major tourist magnet.
There are quite a few shops packed into a small area. Those main streets outlined in blue add up to only about 1/2 a mile so it's quite easy to walk through the center up and down both sides of the street.
One of the most popular activities here is riding in the horse carriage with some commentary by your local driver.
Killarney does have nice wide sidewalks in the downtown area with trees and some benches, and the shops each seem to be unique. It's not like going to a big shopping mall. This place has a lot of character. The center of town, marked in the red circle is the crossroads of busy streets: High Street Main and New. Cars drive down the streets, so there's no pedestrian zone as such, but the sidewalks are nice and wide, it's easy to take a comfortable stroll.

More than a dozen of the pubs and restaurants feature Irish music on a daily basis, such as Scruffy's Bar.
Killarney is the most popular town in the country for visitors, outside of Dublin, and in this program you will see why.
Killarney is in County Kerry, just about three hours from Dublin by car or train.
It's a fairly small town with just three main streets, and it's about 800 meters from one end to the other. Population is just 15,000 people, and yet there's plenty to see and do. The streets are filled with really good shops, and some excellent restaurants, and a lot of pubs with food, conversation drinks and music.
Another special feature of the town is that most of the shops and restaurants are family-owned rather than being part of a big chain, and the typical big high fancy stores that you see all over the world. These shops have their own unique character and the people who work there are friendly.
Our visit happened in the month of May, which is considerably less-crowded in the summer. Perhaps one of the only problems about Killarney is that it's too popular, and it could get a little congested if you're here in the peak season of June and July. And yet the weather in the summer is really quite lovely. That's what brings people here. Ireland does not usually get very hot. Of course you're going to have some rain, the most famous element of Irish weather. That's what keeps it green, keeps the streets clean.
Killarney does have nice wide sidewalks in the downtown area, with trees and some benches, and the shops each seem to be unique. It's not like going to a big shopping mall with a diverse mix of shops, restaurants and pubs.
Cars drive down the street, so this section is not a pedestrian zone, but with this layout, it's easy to take a comfortable stroll.
Some other Irish towns have a pedestrian zone, such as in Galway, and Kinsale, and parts of Dublin, but most towns don't.
Around the corner you'll get to Plunkett Street, which is a little different – its more narrow, it's one lane, and you see people are just strolling in the road. Occasionally it is reserved just for pedestrians. It's much more friendly to people out strolling. Hardly any cars come down Plunkett and when they do, they'll drive slowly, so it's very safe.
At the end Plunkett merges into College Street, which is also a very nice retail neighborhood. Being so pedestrian friendly, it supports a nice range of shops and restaurants, and there are even some AirB&Bs that you could rent here.
We're going to drop in on a handful of restaurants and talk to the owners and workers, and get a feeling for the food and the place.

The small town of Killarney is tucked at the base of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland’s largest mountain range. This charming community has been a popular spot for European visitors since the 1800s, thanks in part to its striking surrounding woodland and temperate climate. Killarney’s tourism has been a major boost for its economy; aside from Dublin, there are more hotel beds in Killarney than in any other Irish community.
Start your Killarney tour with a walk down High Street or College Street, where you can try out some authentic Irish fare. Grab a drink in one of the town’s many pubs, or stop in at a café if you want to forgo the alcohol. The town continues to hum along even after the sun goes down; if you’re a night owl, you’ll love spending the later hours checking out eateries, cafes, and nightclubs.
Any Killarney sightseeing should include Killarney National Park, which is located just two miles from the town. This gorgeous landscape is home to wildlife and a number of Killarney’s famed tourist attractions. Wander through some 24,000 acres of lakes and mountains, which are home to red deer, ospreys, and even Arctic char.
Ready to be impressed? Killarney National Park also houses Ross Castle, a genuine medieval tower perched on the shores of Lough Leane. Looking for something a little less medieval? Tour Muckross House, a 65-room mansion that once hosted Queen Victoria. Before you head back to town, grab a picture on the Old Weir Bridge. How old is it? No one is entirely sure, but historians think it may have been constructed in the 1500s. Like Killarney itself, the bridge remains an endearing place to visit.

First Impressions exploring Killarney Ireland
Having spent over a week in Dublin, Ireland it was time for me to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to visit more of rural Ireland. With this in mind, I headed over to Killarney by myself by train. While visiting the city I was impressed by the passion locals have for Gaelic football (green and gold was everywhere) and I spent the majority of my time exploring Killarney National Park en route to Ross Castle. Although I didn't have a lot of time to spend here I did have a very favorable first impression and would gladly return again in the future if given the opportunity.

First Impressions of Killarney, Ireland Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning everyone. It's bright and early here in Dublin and I'm about to board a train bound for Killarney - a city I've never visited before.
Audrey is off on a friends and family road trip so unfortunately you'll have to be putting up with me the whole time.
Anyways, let's get going.
It's nice, only one transfer today. The journey has been really pleasant so far. It's been really scenic and I should be in Killarney in about an hour.
After arriving at Cill Arine station minus my sweater, I dropped off my bags at the hotel and set off on foot to explore the downtown core.
I quickly found myself impressed by how passionate the city is about its Gaelic Football with Green and Gold displayed everywhere. With no shortage of restaurants and pubs at my disposal it wasn't long before I sat down for lunch.
For lunch I'm going with Fish and Chips and a pint of Guinness. It never gets old.
Well, that really hit the spot. Now it is time to go out and check out the town.
Well, well, it didn't take me long to escape the bustle of the downtown city core. And so far my first impressions of this place have been really positive. It's a nice change of pace from Dublin where you know it is a really big city and it is really hectic. So over here it is much much smaller and literally it took me 2 minutes to walk out into the woods here and now I'm down a path. Just what I want.
It appears I've made it to the entrance of Killarney National Park. But before I go there, there is a cathedral right in front of me that looks absolutely amazing, so I'm going to go check that out first. And then onward to the park.
An interesting fact is that Saint Mary's Cathedral served as a shelter and hospital for the sick and dying during the great famine before it was even fully completed in 1855.
It appears I have options galore in terms of where to go.
Well, Ross Castle it is. And after that gigantic lunch I've got a lot of calories to burn off.
Something you really appreciate in Ireland is when you have a gorgeous day like this. When it is sunny outside, when there is hardly a cloud in the sky. Because it does rain a lot here and so any excuse to put away your umbrella and get outside and go for a walk is definitely worth taking advantage of.
You know how sometimes in life you hit a fork in the road. Well, apparently sometimes you also hit a flood in the road. So this road is flooded here. I'm probably less than five hundred meters away from the castle. I can't see it right now but here is the dilemma. How do I get there?
That appears about as far as I can go unless of course I can magically find a pair of rain-boots or a canoe.
Open to the public Ross Castle built in the 15th Century is situated on the edge of Killarney's lower lake. Visiting its grounds is the perfect ending to a walk in Killarney National Park. In terms of nearby attractions it was definitely my favorite.
I often find when traveling you have these unexpected days. You have these days where you lose your sweater and you try to reach somewhere and it doesn't work the first time or the second time and maybe not even the third time. Luckily it did for me the third time. But anyway this is the kind of adventure that really make traveling interesting for me. I like that days are varied and that you never know what is going to happen.
So I'm going to finish off this adventure with a river-walk back to the hotel.

You NEED to Do This in Killarney - Ireland
Boating through Killarney National Park and Biking through the Gap of Dunloe. I didn't know Ireland was such an adventurous destination.
I was in Killarney to attend TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) and one of the tours they put together, through Failte Ireland, was to boat across Lough Leane and cycle through the Gap of Dunloe, both close to Killarney.
We were pick up at the INEC (Ireland's National Event Center) and transported to Ross Castle on Lough Leane. We took boats, provided by Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours, across the lake to an island with ancient monastery ruins and then navigating through Muckross Lake and Upper Lake before being dropped off at Lord Brandon's Cottage.
From there we mounted our bikes, provided by Ireland Walk Hike Bike, to cycle up the Mountains of East Kerry for the 11 kilometer road through the Gap of Dunloe. The sights were incredible. It did rain on and off the whole day but it just added to the experience and made it more memorable.
We stopped at Heather Restaurant for a delicious meal and the best Irish Coffee I have ever had. Our last stop of the tour was Beaufort Bar, a pub that is as traditional as you can find with live music and dance performers to welcome all us bloggers to Ireland.
It was an amazing first day in Ireland for me and I highly suggest Killarney as a stop on your Ireland trip.

KILLARNEY TOWN, IRELAND
My first visit to Killarney Town. I only spent about two hours exploring the town and it's many shops, pubs, and restaurants. It's a real tourist haven, particularly because of it's location within Killarney National Park and its close proximity to its lakes and mountains, and many forest trails.
Its primarily the starting and ending point if you want to travel on the scenic ring of Kerry.
It is of close proximity to the famous Gap of Dunloe and Macgillycuddy's Reeks Mountain range which has Ireland's highest mountain named Carrauntoohil.
It is well worth a visit, so much things to do and see.

The Drive starts in Killarney National Park at Ross Castle, moving on to Muck Ross House and then the short walk from there to Torc Waterfall.
Driving out of the Park we head up into the hills and see Panoramic views of the lakes and National park at Ladies View, stopping for an early lunch.
Hugging the coastline along Kenmare Bay, there are plenty of places to pull over and take in the views.
Arriving at one of the furthest points Park Plaza we can see Skellig Michael (even though overcast) this was a famous filming location for Star Wars The Last Jedi
Continuing round the route Ballycarberry Castle now derelict and sadly not accessible close-up, but you can still get some good pictures from 100 metres away. It is also near to the Leacanabuaile Stone Fort. On top of the hill you get panoramic views of area and Castle.
It took us about 9 hours to do the drive, before starting to head for Dingle our stop for the night. From there we will tour the Slea Head Drive, and see how it compares to the Ring of Kerry.
There is so much to see and do. We have shown you just a small amount of things and really stuck to the road route. You need a few days to explore all the attractions in the centre of the Peninsula.

Killarney-One of My Favorite Places in Ireland! (With Live Pub Performances)
Killarney, Ireland has a small town feel to it, like a quaint village. In my opinion, it has the best live Irish pub music in Ireland (which you will see and hear), and we went to pubs in five different Irish cities. Killarney is also a short ride away from Ross Castle and from getting a jaunting car (horse and carriage) ride back from the castle. It's also close to beautiful Killarney National Park and is a great place to start your Ring of Kerry tour.

A day in Killarney, Ireland
Hi Friends, On our visit home to Ireland, went down to Killarney and stayed overnight. I wish I had spent longer there and will definitely be doing it again. It is such a pretty town and I highly recommend visiting.
