Kilimanjaro mountain national park

Kilimanjaro mountain (The roof of Africa) is located about 300 kilometres south of the equator just near the city of Moshi. Kilimanjaro Mountain has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from being the highest free standing mountain in the planet, it is also the highest mountain in Africa. In Kilimanjaro national park you can do;

Climbing,
Wildlife Watching. In trekking you can see baboons, bush pigs, mongooses, elephants and a number of other animals. But keep in mind that you might need to hire an armed park ranger to reach some interior habitats due to the fact that you will be in the potential danger of meeting leopards, buffalos and other large animals
Visiting the Chala Crater Lake
With the top peak being 5,970 ft, Kilimanjaro Mountain has several routes to use while climbing such as Marangu route, Machae route, Rongai route, Umbwe route, Shira route, and Lemosho route and mweka route

Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….

Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.

Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.

--About my Cooperation with G Adventures--
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers outdoor tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

Kilimanjaro To The Roof of Africa - Part 1/4

This is one of the well filmed documentaries on Africa, this time is the Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It was created by David Breashears, creator of the acclaimed IMAX film EVEREST. The following reviewers from IMDB ( have the following to say on this film:

****

Kilimanjaro is called the largest mountain, not the highest of course, but rising from the plains and rain forests which surround it this ancient volcano is huge. Even local Tanzanians only know it from afar but few ever get near its glaciers and its summit.

The team that made this film wanted to make it identifiable by the viewing audience. So the expedition featured 6 hikers not much different from most of us, including an older woman, a 12-year-old girl from the USA, and a 12-year-old local boy who had never touched snow.

The trek takes a week, and takes them from muddy rainforest to almost 20,000 feet. As they say in the film, it is like going from the Amazon to Antarctica.

I am among those not acquainted with Kilimanjaro. For those of us who don't have the time and wealth to explore such places, this IMAX film is superb. ..by TxMike, IMDB user

****

'The movie, Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa, was excellent. Not only was the content of the movie intriguing and interesting, but seeing it on the giant screen transported you out of your seat and onto the mountain. I would recommend this to anyone looking to explore the terrain of a beautiful country, while sitting in the comfort of a movie theater. ..by EL, IMDB user

Primera parte de nuestro viaje a África, Junio 2018.

KILIMANJARO - Part 2 !!! Highest Peak in AFRICA | (Africa Series : Ep 04 )

Mount Kilimanjaro - Part 1

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 m (19,341 ft) above sea level and about 4,900 m (16,100 ft) above its plateau base. It is the highest volcano in Africa and the Eastern Hemisphere.

Kilimanjaro is the fourth most topographically prominent peak on Earth. It is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major hiking and climbing destination. Because of its shrinking glaciers and ice fields, which are projected to disappear between 2025 and 2035, it has been the subject of many scientific studies.

Kilimanjaro is a large dormant stratovolcano composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, the highest; Mawenzi at 5,149 m (16,893 ft); and Shira, the lowest at 4,005 m (13,140 ft).Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again.

Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo's crater rim. The Tanzania National Parks Authority, a Tanzanian government agency, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization lists the height of Uhuru Peak as 5,895 m (19,341 ft), based on a British survey in 1952.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a currently inactive strato-volcano in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. At 5,895 metres (19,340 feet) above sea level, Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and the world's highest free-standing mountain. As such - and aided by its relatively easy ascent - Kilimanjaro has become a major destination for mountaineers and trekkers from around the world.

Although positioned close to the Equator (330 km south), Mount Kilimanjaro is famous as Africa's snow-capped mountain looming over the plains of the savannah. In recent years, however, the snows have been fast disappearing. Kilimanjaro National Park protects the area above 2,700 metres (8,850 ft), on the mountain and includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The Park also has six corridors or rights of way through the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. The Forest Reserve, which is also a Game Reserve, was established in 1921; the Park was established in 1973 and officially opened in 1977.

Kilimanjaro Experience, ☎ +27218526911 Kilimanjaro Experience is a reputable operator on Kilimanjaro. Safety and professionalism are its main concerns.

Cost
====
The costs outlined below are only indicative and exclude flights to and from Kilimanjaro International Airport. They also exclude all inclusive trips which typically include flights, hotels before and after your climb, park fees, guide team and optional extras.

Before getting to Kilimanjaro

The cost of equipment, visas, vaccinations and medications are often forgotten by prospective climbers. In general you will spend anywhere between $500-$1,500 on equipment as most climbers need to buy an extreme weather sleeping bag, a duffle bag, suitable clothing and other climbing accessories.

You will also need to get a Yellow Fever vaccination as this is a mandatory requirement to enter Tanzania. You might want to get booster injections for Hepatitis A and other related diseases. Seek medical advice from your travel clinic but budget at least $100-$200. Tanzania is a malaria zone; however mosquitoes do not occur at altitude (over 1,800 meters). You will be spending most of your trip above this altitude but will be exposed before and after the climb. If you decide to take malaria tablets budget at least $50

Finally you will be required to get a Tanzanian visa. In 2013 the cost was $50 and for US citizens it is $100. You can get the visa before departing or on arrival in Tanzania.

Organised Tour (incl. Park Fees)
----------------------------------------------
To climb Kilimanjaro you have to use a licenced guide. If you are not well-versed in the logistics of Kilimanjaro climbs then the only realistic way to trek Kilimanjaro is through a tour operator. A no-frills 5 day, 4 night trek up the Marangu will set you back by around $1,100. However, if you are not accustomed to altitude it is highly recommended you take a 6 or 7 day trip which start at over $1,400, depending on the route.

Remember fees for all inclusive packages vary due to factors of route choice and length of climb, but also depend on the quality of the tour operator and service delivery. Do your research and ask as many questions as possible before you decide on a tour operator. Better operators who treat their staff more ethically and employ professional guides who are trained to look after your well-being tend to be more expensive. For a more luxurious climb, you will be set back by as much as $2500-$3,000 for your climb. Luxuries include hot showers, portable toilets, larger more comfortable sleeping tents and mattresses and private transport, etc.

Budget camping safaris usually cost $260 per day and luxury lodge safaris cost $470 per day depending on where you want to stay. The price include all meals and game drives usually in a 4x4 safari vehicle with an open roof.

Africa, Tanzania, Summit Mt Kilimanjaro, Part1 Episode 131

Africa (Tanzania) in the rain season has its advantages. No tourists. I'm the only tourist in the package. Just me, the guide, porters, cook, cook's assistant and only a half dozen westerners in the entire park. I decided to summit Kilimanjaro in the rainy season for that reason (and because I am cheap and was hoping for a discount). Remember that in season you can expect 600 fellow westerners.it seemed ideal for an isolated hassle free summit attempt. Oh and did I mention wet and rainy?

How to climb Kilimanjaro (part 1)

Our story of climbing Kilimanjaro (part 1)
voice-over courtesy vocodes.com

Kilimanjaro - part 1/3

We went to Moshi to climb mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain of Africa (Speech mostly in Swedish with occasionally moments of high altitude confused English).

Kilimanjaro is located in the north part of Tanzania. Altitude of Uhuru peak is 5895 meter. Starting at 1700m, the climb is more than 4000 vertical meters. The Machame route can be done in 6 or 7 days and is very popular due to the acclimatization system the route offers which gives a high success rate. The route is also the most beautiful one.

It's possible to fly direct to Moshi. We went from Dar es Salaam to Moshi by bus. We like to recommend Kilimanjaro Backpackers hotel in Moshi. Very service minded staff and nice place to stay. It's possible to book the trek in Moshi as late as 12 hours before start, but you will get a last minute trip with last minute quality. There are only a few authorized companies. The national park should have a list of agencies and the permit to arrange treks is expensive. Bring cloths you don't want to bring home again. Give it away to the porters after. They will appreciate all equipment and this includes your old trekking boots and socks.

Anyone can climb this mountain. It will just be easier if you prepare yourself with some training before you go.

Kilimanjaro 2011 - The Movie - PART 1

Part 1 of our trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro in October / November 2011 with Action Challenge for Macmillan Cancer Care.
In this part we commence the Lemosho route, clamber our way through the rainforest, get a bit damp on the Shira plateau and start to feel a bit ill and hit the Diamox quick. In the next part we attempt the mighty Matt Bianco wall. Sorry, Barranco wall.
