???????? FALCONRY of Kenya: African Birds of Prey, Reptiles & Old Tortoise {Budget Travel Malindi, KENYA}

With protective gloves, falconry is fun!

Falconry of Kenya, in Malindi, Kenya, displays several species of Kenyan raptors who have been trained in this spectacle. The birds are in captivity for rehabilitation or because they're permanently injured and cannot be released into the wild.

This sanctuary is in a natural setting and in addition to the feathered friends, many reptiles and amphibians share the facility. Snakes alive, there are poisonous serpents plus crocodiles and tortoises.

Taking center stage is a century-old tortoise who is expected to live the better part of 300 years. Talk about needing to pace yourself through life.

Along with Matt, a school field trip has the students get up close with the animals.

Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus)
Martial eagle is the largest eagle in Africa, weighing about 14 pounds (6.5 Kg.) and has a wingspan of about 6 feet. Avery powerful avian predator amongst all other eagles. Has a remarkable eyesight (3 - 4 times human acuity). Due to this power, they can spot potential prey from a very great distance. The diet of the Martial Eagle varies greatly with prey availability and can be dictated largely by opportunity. Their diet is made up of birds, particularly medium-sized ground-dwelling species such as francolins, guinea fowl, young ostriches and quelea. They breed in various months in different parts of their range. This video was recorded by chance in one of our game drives in Masai Mara. Video recorded by HD Canon Vixia gh 10. for adventures in the wilderness.

Maasai mara Birds of prey

Beate Apfelbeck - Research in Taita Hills, Kenya

Kenya's Taita Hills is a dense cloud forest teeming with wildlife. While that may sound like paradise, the forest is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation – which is raising concerns amongst researchers. This video was taken as part of research on the effects of habitat degradation on parental behaviour in placid greenbuls in the forest. The two nestlings were first fed by the breeding male (identified by his colour rings), and then by the breeding female. The noise in the background when the goshawk appears are the parents who try to distract the goshawk from the nest.

Lappet-faced vultures, Maasai Mara, Kenya

These two lappet-faced vultures are roosting on their nest at the edge of the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya. Also known as the Nubian vulture, they are the most aggressive of the African vultures and push other vulture species off of carcasses. It is the longest and largest winged vulture in its range.

Unfortunately, they are now listed as engarged with population declines due to habitat destruction, poisoning with pesticides, and disturbances of nesting sites. Estimated global population is less than 9,000 individuals.

Critically endangered raptors receive food donation from Governors'

We recently supported the work of the Kenya Bird of Prey Trust by providing 305kg of beef for their raptors which includes these critically endangered Rüppell's vultures. This is a fun (if somewhat entertaining) short video which shows the food being handed out to the birds during feeding time.

Please do visit the Naivasha Raptor Center if you are in the Naivasha region or staying with us at Loldia House.
