???????? Whilst exploring an old Soviet village in Azerbaijan I was stopped by a polite old gentleman who asked for my documents. Who was he? Why did he want them? Who did he work for? Did I do the right thing? Who knows but I think I just me the Azerbaijan version of the KGB.

Who are the Molokans? Russian Christian Sect exiled to Azerbaijan
Who are the Molokans? The Russian Religious Christian Sect exiled to Azerbaijan from Central European Russia in the 1800’s. This group of people don’t have photos in their homes, don’t watch TV, don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. They set up home in the village of Ivanovka in the centre of Azerbaijan. A place where they were free to practice their own religion and live in peace.
These ethnic Russians were banished here during the Russian Empire period by Tsar Katherine the great for their different religious beliefs and in the hope to cause them issues from the local Azeri muslim population. However, this wasn’t the case and the Russian population were welcomed in to Azerbaijan and have stayed here ever since, throughout both the Soviet Union period and the period of modern Azerbaijan.
Nowadays, there are generations of Molokans who speak Russian, are ethnically Russian but have no association with the modern country. We travelled to Ivanovka to explore and fond out more about this unique Christian sect, their traditions and how they live in 2022 & modern Azerbaijan more generally ????????????????

Inside Perm 36: The Last Gulag
???????? Under Stalin the G.U.LAG ( Main Administration of Camps ) system spread out across what was the former Soviet Union, swallowing up citizens and foreigners from all corners of the empire. Ukrainians, Estonians, Kyrgyz etc. were taken from their homes and sent north in box cars to the camps to work away their stretches. Millions passed through the camps and many never returned home. Those camps have long been dismantled or converted into regular factories and work places and you'd be hard pressed to know that you were visiting a former camp. However Perm 36 logging camp has been preserved and so I travelled to the very edge of Europe to a village called Kutchino to visit the last Gulag and to see how the prisoners lived.

???????? Azerbaijan Road Trip Part 5 - Red Bridge Customs Post to Ganja
After Tbilisi, we started to head towards Ganja early in the morning. We bought some gas in the Georgian side which was a mistake as gas prices were way lower in Azerbaijan. After an hour of drive we reached the border. It was called Red Bridge Customs Port (Qızıl Qöprü). It was rather easy to complete the Georgian exit formalities but it took more than hour to have the car enter into Azerbaijan. They wanted to search for it and our friend was inside by himself and we couldn't help him as passengers in the car are considered pedestrians and are required to pass the border by themselves without the car. The driver had to deal with the car and load off all the luggage and pass it from x-rays if required. Anyhow, finally without any problems he was able to complete the procedures and we entered the Azerbaijan safe and sound. We wanted to reach Ganja that day and find a place to eat and stay and continue our travel to Baku. But once we reached Ganja, we had to update the plans and ditched the Baku plans and decided to go to Sheki instead. This video is on the way to Ganja only. We stopped by on the way to get some watermelon and ate it on the spot thanks to the super friendly young man selling the watermelons.

The village at the end of the world ????????
Follow the stony steel-grey Qudyalchay river upstream out of drab Quba and into the mountains. The buildings become sparser and the mountains loom higher. This was a dirt track until it was sealed for a presidential visit in 2006. Follow it until the road runs out. There lies the village of Khinalug and the speakers of its eponymous language isolate. The colossal glowing south wall of Mount Shahdagh presides over it as a witness to the ancient rhythms of life in this lonely outpost, where, save for a few obvious signs of modernity like 4x4s and phone lines, life seems to proceed much as it has for centuries. Join me on a quest to Azerbaijan's highest and most isolated mountain village to find out what language they speak at the end of the world.

The old KGB building in Riga Latvia - not a place anyone would want to be a guest of back in the day
In the dark days when Latvia was behind the Iron curtain and subjected to the evils of communism, the KGB had a building right in the centre of Riga Latvia from 1944 to 1991. It's now a museum so of course due to my fondness for espionage history I went to have a look at it. In this very brief video, I give my very brief opinion on this Top tourist attraction.
