From epic landscapes to monumental ruins, #Jordan allows us to reach out and touch the eternal and be at one with something far greater than ourselves.

The ancient Greeks knew Jordan’s capital, Amman, as Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. Overlooking Amman is the Citadel, the city’s ancient core. Rising over the Citadel are the remaining pillars of the Temple of Hercules, a Roman temple that in its day dwarfed many in Ancient Rome.

From Amman, #journey north to Jerash, home to one of the largest concentrations of Roman ruins outside Italy. Then, continue north to Ajloun Castle, built to halt the Crusader armies as they rode down Jordan’s northern valley, hell-bent on Jerusalem.

Enter the gravel plains of the Eastern Desert and follow the Desert Castle Loop. For many, the highlight here is Qasr al-Azraq, where Lawrence of Arabia made his winter headquarters.

Travel south to Madaba, famed for the Madaba Map, one of the earliest depictions of the Holy Lands. Continue south along the Kings Highway, which once took Arabs to Mecca, and Israelites to the Promised Land.

Follow the hairpin road 1300 feet below sea level to the Dead Sea. Float in the saline waters and cover yourself in the same mineral-rich muds Cleopatra once enjoyed.

No visit to Jordan is complete without a visit to Petra. Emerge from the shadows of the Siq and gaze up at the Treasury, the greatest of all of Petra’s 500 tombs. Then continue south to explore the emptiness of Wadi Rum.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Jordan Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Jordan.
Jordan is known as The Pearl Of The Orient: a fascinating land with a culture that is thousands of years old, a land of colourful epochs and biblical history, all to be rediscovered in this Hasemite kingdom that was founded in 1946. Pharaohs, Assyrian kings and Persian monarchs once fought for this country. Nabateans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders and Ottomans, each of them left their traces in Jordan.Amman is Jordan’s capital city in which, poverty and wealth live side by side. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam and five times a day the Muezzin calls to the faithful from its Minaret. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad. It was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. Around thirty kilometres northwest of Amman is As-Salt that is situated between two mountain slopes. Up until the First World War this city that had a good supply of water and enjoyed a good climate, was the main metropolis of Trans-Jordan. Saladin had this fortress built on a twelve hundred metre high hill in 1184. Qal’at Ajlun was meant to be a defence against the approaching Crusaders and also to protect pilgrims on their way to Mecca. At an altitude of eight hundred metres is a place of great significance for the Jewish and Christian faiths, Nebo Mountain, where God revealed to Moses the Promised Land for the first time after his forty year journey from Egypt. Near Wadi Musa, The Valley Of Moses, is the fascinating and legendary rose red city of Petra. Its strategic location at the junction of six important caravan routes, including the famous Incense Road, brought much prosperity to the city. The most impressive route to Petra travels through the Siq, a narrow gorge with huge sandstone walls. Jordan is a priceless gem located in the Near East with all the magical romance of the Orient!

Jordan Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations

Jordan is a peaceful oasis in the turmoil of the Middle East. As one of the cradles of human civilization and a part of the Holy Land, Jordan has such invaluable monuments as the Roman city of Jerash, or the mystical capital of the Nabateans, the marvellous Petra, the city carved from red stone. Moses also lies here, but apart from that, one cannot forget the mosaics of Madaba, the national park of Dana, the hot waterfalls of Wadi Zarka and the 70 kilometers long coast of the Dead Sea. The capital, Amman, and Aqaba, which lies on the coast of the Mediterranean See, are real eastern cities with their mosques and bazaars, while the Wadi Rum with is wonderful stone arches and the Red Desert offer the tourists different kinds of experience from off road jeep tours to camel trips and Bedouin camps.

1 week in Jordan! - Not what I expected.

Amman, Jerash, Wadi Rum, Petra, Dead Sea and back to Amman.
Jordan is such a beautiful place with very kind people. You don't get hassled by vendors like you do in other middle eastern countries. They're a very neutral country and call themselves the Switzerland of the middle east... such a treat to travel here.

A Travel Guide to Jordan

A Travel Guide to Jordan
Jordan is an extraordinary country. Although small in size and young in terms of nation state, it is blessed with some of the regions most revered historical treasures, some of its most spectacular scenery and some of its kindest and most hospitable people. It has a delicious cuisine, a good tourist infrastructure – with some great accommodation and knowledgeable guides – and under the much respected royal family, a stable government. Throughout its short history, Jordan has bucked the trends of its neighbours; by welcoming the foreign traveller with open arms, and gallons of sweet mint tea, in many ways it continues to do so.
Amman is a lively, liberal city, modern in character, yet with one foot rooted firmly in the past. With a history dating back to Neolithic times, its journey travels through the Greeks and Romans – when it was known as Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love’ – before being abandoned for almost a thousand years only to rise again in 1921 as the country’s modern capital. Today it carries an air of dynamic self-assurance, and is an easy place to hang out for a day or two. Things not to be missed are the downtown area, the fruit and vegetable market, the Roman theatre, and the citadel with the capital’s most famous monument, the Temple of Hercules.
From Amman the first thing you might like to do is take a day trip to visit the country’s most famous Roman town, Jaresh. Although Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements can be found nearby, the town came to prominence during in the 1st century AD. Sites to check out here are the Temple of Zeus, the South Theatre and its impressive, and renovated, Hippodrome – which has seen a revival of the Roman sport of chariot racing.
Travelling south you’ll pass Mount Nebo, the site from which Moses showed his people the Promised Land and take a look around Madaba, where, among other things, on the floor of St George’s church you can see the first map of the Holy Land in the form of a wonderful mural.
But Jordan isn’t just about sites of antiquity, it also has some stunning natural wonders to experience. Just to the east of Madaba you can go for a float in the Dead Sea – and, if you so desire, cover yourself in the rejuvenating mud, or treat yourself to a spa or swim at one of the regions smart 5 star hotels – before enjoying remote, offbeat locations like the tiny village of Dana, which has recently been reinvented as an eco-village for travellers looking to explore the nearby reserve.
While most people enter Petra from the town of Wadi Musa, through the famous Siq, or narrow gorge, emerging at the Treasury, there is another route in. Taking the rarely used back entrance not only offers a spectacular walk, through the regions beautifully rugged terrain, it also means you avoid the crowds and start your tour of the amazing Pink City at the impressive Monastery, and thus save the Treasury till last.
And what a site Petra is – truly one of the wonders of the world. Covering some 250 square kilometres, the former capital of the Nabateans simply astounds. The beautiful pink rock, carved into magnificent facades showcasing the noble family’s temples and tombs, divided by mighty canyons and gorges, really does leave you speechless. At one time the city was home to some 30,000 inhabitants and the scale of the place is mind-blowing.
And finally you come to the most impressive of all the Petra sites, the famous Treasury, which simply has to be one of the most magnificent monuments ever created.
This is simply one of the most majestic desert landscapes you are ever likely to witness, a place where orange sands drift against towering red cliffs and immense vistas ride out under vast desert skies. This is a great place to stay for the night, either sleeping wild under the stars or in one of the impressive camps, the best of which is almost certainly Discover Circle, Bedu Camp.
And as dramatic as it is, Wadi Rum has been used as a location in a numerous famous movies.
And finally right in the south is the Red Sea town of Aqaba, which as well as being an important port and modern beach resort for locals, also has its place in history.
With plenty of good walks to be had, horse riding holidays to experience, even great diving in the Red Sea, Jordan also has its fair share of activities to enjoy. At the Feynan Eco Resort it has an award winning ethical hotel, at Karak and Shobak it has Crusader castles and in the Azraq Wetlands it offers some amazing birdwatching.

In The Land Of The Nabateans (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Documentary about the Nabateans tribe in Jordan.
The Jordan Desert is a beautiful, natural landscape and was once home to a legendary and mysterious people that fell into oblivion some centuries ago, the Nabateans, whose realm was at its zenith some two thousand years ago and resulted in some of the most fascinating ruins of antiquity. Due to their remote and obscure location the remains of Petra, a legendary Nabatean city of rock, were for many years merely regarded as a myth and only a few local Bedouin tribes knew of the existence of certain ancient buildings in the south of what is now Jordan. Both El-Barid and Petra were located in a very favourable position at the junction of several ancient trading routes that led from the Arabian Peninsula to as far as Anatolia and into today’s Syria and Egypt. Caravan trains brought great wealth to the Nabatean realm. The technical knowledge and achievements of this ancient desert tribe were quite remarkable. Drains that were several kilometres long supplied the local population with fresh water, an essential commodity in the desert. One of the region’s most famous natural landmarks is situated in the northern part of the Wadi, Rum, The Seven Pillars Of Wisdom, a striking rock that was named after a novel by Lawrence Of Arabia. Inspired by the enthusiastic writings of the legendary secret agent, film director David Lean decided to shoot the film at the original locations mentioned by Lawrence. The shining colour of the rocks and the fascinating desert landscape of the Wadi Rum have been made famous by the historic film. The conquest of this region by the Arabs in the middle of the seventh century marked the decline of the legendary rock city of Petra. For more than a thousand years the ruins of this ancient civilisation lay hidden beneath the desert sands of Jordan before they once again revealed some of their secrets to a new and fascinated world.

Petra (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Petra in Jordan.
Between the Gulf Of Akaba and the Dead Sea, close to Wadi Musa, the “Valley Of MOSES” in the heart of Jordan and hidden beyond near impenetrable mountains, is the fascinating and mysterious ancient city of Petra. Its strategic location at the junction of six important caravan routes, including the famous Incense Road, brought much prosperity to the city. The almost two kilometre long Siq follows the dried out riverbed of the Musa whose course was redirected by the Nabnataeans in order to protect their capital from dangerous flood waters. A canal that follows the Siq around two metres above ground is a fine technical masterpiece that was also created by the Nabataeans. There are only two routes that lead to the rocky city of Petra a narrow mountain pass in the northwest and, to the east, the sometimes two hundred metre deep Siq Gorge. It is believed that the Treasury, carved out of solid rock walls, was built in the first century B.C. It is the main landmark of the ancient Nabataean metropolis. Six splendid columns form the lower part of the atrium that in common with most of the architecture here has been exceptionally well-preserved.

Wadi Rum (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Wadi Rum in Jordan.
Around fifty kilometres from the Jordanian city of Aqaba is one of the most fascinating desert landscapes in the world, the Wadi Rum. Despite its desolate terrain and hostile environment the region was first inhabited several thousand years ago. The beauty of the mountains has inspired several authors the most famous of whom was Englishman, Thomas Edward Lawrence. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lawrence Of Arabia, as he became known, visited the Wadi Rum on several occasions. It is no coincidence that one of the region's magnificent rock formations bears the same name as that given by Lawrence to his famous autobiography, The Seven Pillars Of Wisdom. One of the most popular destinations in this region and also one of the most famous landmarks of the Wadi Rum is the imposing rock bridge situated at Djebel Burdah. It is a natural work of art: the Um Fruth Rock Bridge is a further impressive example of the powerful forces of erosion that for millions of years have created what is visible today. The thing that makes the Bedouin police a little different is their mode of transport. For centuries the camel has been the loyal servant of those who inhabit this region. Gone are the days when the Bedouin possessed camel herds that numbered a hundred thousand and yet age old traditions still play an important role in the everyday life of the people. The Wadi Rum is well worth a visit!

10 Things NOT To Do in Jordan!

Jordan isn’t the war-torn, inhospitable country most people imagine. It is a land of beauty and tradition with friendly people who welcome you with open arms!
But as with every country, there are some things you shouldn’t do.
Here are 10 Things NOT To Do in Jordan!

1. Don’t Ride the Camels
Yes, it may seem like fun but its actually hard work. You’ll be nearly thrown off when it gets up, and when it kneels down and on the ride you’ll be behind another camel watching how it farts, pees and poos.

2. Don't Be Late Whilst Visiting Petra
Petra is a big tourist spot. If you want to explore the ancient city and visit the treasury, the royal tombs, and the monastery without the crowds, arrive before opening time.

3. Don’t Forget to Get The Jordan Pass Before You Arrive!
A standard tourist visa costs $56, entry into Petra costs $71. As long as you’re planning on staying at least 3 nights, the Jordan Pass includes all this as well as entrance to other attractions for $99!

4. Don’t Go To “Petra by Night”
This is more of a tourist gimmick than a sight worth seeing, it costs $24 and consists of an underwhelming traditional music performance and an equally disappointing illumination of the treasury. It's better to spend your money at “The cave bar” which claims to be the oldest bar in the world.

5. Don’t Think They Hate You!
Jordan relies on tourism and welcomes tourists. They are hospitable and want you to enjoy your stay. There has been a lot of scaremongering due to Jordan’s neighbors Iraq and Syria but that’s like saying Beverly hills is full of crime because its close to Skid Row.

6. Don’t Pay to Float in the Dead Sea
There are several places on the coast offering showers, hotel facilities, and food but if you follow the coast further south there are places where you can float for free.

7. Don’t Try Diving in the Dead Sea
Not only is it impossible due to its buoyancy, but it’s 34% salt content will make your eyes and nose sting. Also don’t swim if your freshly shaven or have cuts or scratches.

8. Don’t Offend the Locals
Every culture has certain religious do’s and don’ts here are some quick ones
Don’t point the soles of your feet at anyone
Don’t walk in front of someone who's praying
And Don’t interrupt someone who's praying

9. Don’t Refuse Coffee or Food
In general, it’s best not to refuse an offering. As a people, they are very hospitable and take pride in offering too much food and drink so they may take offense if you refuse.

10. Don’t Worry About Your Clothes
They are not as conservative as you think, many wear jeans and t-shirts. Just don’t dress too provocatively and keep your elbows and knees covered!

Which Don’t surprised you the most?

Jerash (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Jerash in Jordan.
Northern Jordan contains many magnificent historic locations including that of Gerasa, today’s Jerash, that is one of the most well-preserved metropolises of ancient Rome.Gerasa had its economic and cultural high season in the first century A.D. while under Roman rule. Situated on a small hill, the Temple Of Zeus was built in the years 162 and 163 A.D. The town developed quickly within the union of the Greek Dekapolis, a federation of ten important ancient cites in the Near East and profited from the agriculture of the surrounding area and from ore mining in the nearby Aljun Mountains. This financial success gave rise to the city’s large building projects, particularly in the second century A.D. A further remarkable feature of the architecture in Gerasa is the wide and eight hundred metre long street, the Cardo Maximus, once the city’s main street. It was originally flanked by columns, five hundred of which have survived. Directly south of the Artemis Temple are the remains of the Sankt Theodor Church that has the three aisled ground plan of a basilica and dates back to the fifth century. At the beginning of the nineteenth century Gerasa was rediscovered by archaeologists. The twentieth century brought with it new excavations that have since returned this amazing ancient city into the full light of day.

Jordan's Crusader Castles (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Jordan's Crusader Castles in Jordan.
The ruins of the Crusader castles of Jordan serve as a reminder of the bloody battles that once took place between the Christians and Moslems and that shook the Near East at a time in history known as The Crusades.Around four kilometres from the small town of Ajlun is Jordan’s sole surviving castle, Qalaat Ar-Rabad. It was designed to protect the pilgrims who were on their way to Mecca but was also a symbol of military power aimed well and truly at the Crusaders. The year 1115 marked not only the victory of the Crusaders at the Battle Of Tell Danit but also the beginning of Shoubak’s construction. After a siege that lasted eighteen months, Shoubak fell in 1189 to Ayyubiden. Shortly afterwards it was enlarged by the Marmeluccs and in the 19th century the Ottomans moved into the fortress. The most famous of the Crusader castles is situated in the city of Kerak around twenty kilometres southeast of the southernmost extremity of the Dead Sea. The fortress had great strategic importance as those who controlled Al Kerak also controlled large areas of Palestine and an area that extended to the southern section of the Dead Sea. Almost a hundred years after the conquest of the fortress the last French outposts in the Near East were also abandoned and today it is only the mighty and impressive ruins of the Crusaders that have survived: an atmospheric reminder of a glorious and colourful past.
