An Unbelievable Tour Through the Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel
Touring Mont Saint Michel was incredible! The story, architecture, the food, it was lovely. We stayed very close, just on the outside of the walls and took a free shuttle in to see the city. You can stay inside the walls if you like. I prefer to have the view each day in the distance. We walked through the abbaye and strolled through the slopped streets for an afternoon. It was nice.

16th May-Day 5 of 17: At 4 pm we arrived at Le Mont Saint Michel, coming from Honfleur.
In order to get the most out of your visit it's necessery to avoid the mass of tourists. Therefore we have chosen a hotel INSIDE the walled city. So, when the day-tourists left the Island, we started - at 5pm - the tour throught the abbey.
At dawn / night the island is almost an empty place - very romantic.
On the next morning - early ! - we continued the sightseeing tour, just before the rush hour began. At 10 am we moved on the our next destination - Dinan.

Mont Saint-Michel and its Abbey at the Peak of the Rocky Island
Mont Saint-Michel is a small UNESCO World Heritage site located on an island just off the coast of the region of Lower Normandy in northern France. The island is best known as the site of the spectacular and well-preserved Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Michel at the peak of the rocky island, surrounded by the winding streets and convoluted architecture of the medieval town.
The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times, and since the eighth century AD has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it. On top God, the abbey and monastery, below this the Great halls, then stores and housing, and at the bottom, outside the walls, fishermen and farmers' housing.
Now a rocky tidal island, in prehistoric times the Mont was on dry land. As sea levels rose, erosion reshaped the coastal landscape, and several outcroppings of granite or granulite emerged in the bay, having resisted the wear and tear of the ocean better than the surrounding rocks. The Mont has a circumference of about 960 meters and is 92 metres above sea level at its highest point.
The tides can vary greatly, at roughly 14 metres between high and low water marks. Popularly nicknamed St. Michael in peril of the sea by medieval pilgrims making their way across the flats, the mount can still pose dangers for visitors who avoid the causeway and attempt the hazardous walk across the sands from the neighbouring coast.

The Abbey of Mont Saint Michel is thought to date back to the year 708, when the Bishop of Avranches built a sanctuary in honor of the Archangel Michael on a barren rock lying just half a mile offshore of the coast of France. The mount soon became a major pilgrimage site and gradually a village grew up below its walls. In the 10th century, the Benedictines settled in the Abbey and began construction of the enormous crypts, upon which the church and abbey would eventually stand. Today, Mont Saint Michel is still a pilgrimage site; tourists by the thousands flock to this fairy-tale castle lies in the tidal basin where the Couesnon River flows into the English Channel, surrounded by water at high tide and muddy sand flats at low tide. Though most come for the architecture and history, I most enjoyed the noon mass. The crystal clear voices of the singing nuns, heard in the above video, reverberated through the cavernous church and sent chills down my spine.

The Mont Saint Michel Abbey is located within the city and island of Mont-Saint-Michel in Lower Normandy.
The abbey is an essential part of the structural composition of the town the feudal society constructed. On top, God, the abbey, and monastery; below this, the Great halls, then stores and housing, and at the bottom (outside the walls), fishermen's and farmers' housing.
The first text about an abbey is the 9th-century Latin text Revelatio ecclesiae sancti Michaelis in monte Tumba written by a chanoine living at Mont Saint Michel or at the Cathédrale Saint-André d'Avranches.
The abbey has been protected as a French monument historique since 1862. Since 1979, the site as a whole, the Mont Saint-Michel and its bay – has been a UNESCO world heritage site.
