I Visited MEDINA, SAUDI ARABIA, as a Non Muslim ???????? المدينة

Medina is the second Holiest city in Islam after Mecca. It's here where the Prophet Muhammad lived and died. Millions of Pilgrims flood to both Mecca and Medina every year.

Whilst touring Saudi Arabia at the beginning of 2020, I passed Medina on my way to Al Ula from Jeddah. Having been told by various sources it was okay for me to roam around the city (but avoid entering the Prophet's Mosque), I decided to take the opportunity to explore. Traditionally, non Muslims have been forbidden from entering Mecca (and this is still the case) but for Medina there is no such enforcement of this rule, and all visitors are welcomed.

Medina as Non Muslim - Solo Travel in Saudi Arabia المدينة المنورة المملكة العربية السعودية أجنبي

Medina is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, and one of the most visited places in Saudi Arabia. As a non Muslim, it was unsure whether I could travel to the city center, reading conflicting reports beforehand. I decided to check for myself, and found that I was allowed to visit everywhere, except inside the main mosque, the Al Masjid an Nawabi.

Medina is known as the City of the Prophet, and considered the second holiest site in Islam after Mecca. This is where Islam’s main Prophet, Muhammad, lived and was eventually laid to rest. All able Muslims are supposed to make the journey to Medina and Mecca once in their life.

This is the third episode of a 6 part vlog style series about my journey through Saudi Arabia. For other episodes, please click here:

Episode 1 - One Day in Riyadh:

Episode 2 - Journey to the Edge of the World:

Episode 4 - Umluj Islands in the Red Sea:

Episode 5 - Camel Racing in Saudi Arabia:

Episode 6 - Jeddah City Tour:

For a view of Saudi Arabia from above:

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled solo to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, Jeddah and the Red Sea coast.

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of the religion of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.

Note: I travel independently and take no money from sponsors. This journey through Saudi Arabia was paid for and organized entirely by myself.

Before my trip to Saudi Arabia, I had no idea that I was allowed to visit Medina. It’s the 2nd holiest city in Islam and I always assumed that it was off-limits to non-Muslims (similar to Mecca) — but I was wrong! Anybody is allowed to visit Medina (even Jews!), they just can’t venture inside the gates of the Prophet’s Mosque.

I went to Medina with my local friend, Abdullah, the same guy who took me on a virtual tour of Mecca. And I really enjoyed my time in the city. There is this overwhelming spirit in the air, something similar to Jerusalem or Varanasi, and it’s something I will never forget!

Have you ever been to Medina? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Also if you’re planning to visit Saudi, check out Abdullah’s company, @88destinstions - they can help plan your trip!

SAUDI ARABIA Solo Travel | Caught in Medina as Non Muslim المدينة المنورة????????

#saudiarabia #medina #solotravel
This is my experience travelling solo in Medina (Saudi Arabia), the second holiest city of Islam, in November 2022. I was caught by the religious police while walking in front of the Prophet Mosque as not Muslim.

Medina is generally considered to be the cradle of Islamic culture and civilization. The city is considered to be the second-holiest of three key cities in Islamic tradition, with Mecca and Jerusalem serving as the holiest and third-holiest cities respectively. Al-Masjid al-Nabawi ( 'The Prophet's Mosque') is of exceptional importance in Islam and serves as burial site of the last Islamic prophet, Muhammad, by whom the mosque was built in 622 CE. Observant Muslims usually visit his tomb, or rawdhah, at least once in their lifetime during a pilgrimage known as Ziyarat, although this is not obligatory.

Medina is my second stop within my 10 days solo travel experience in Saudi Arabia, a country which opened to international tourism in 2019 only and it is is still partly misunderstood.

MADINAH AS A NON-MUSLIM FIRST IMPRESSIONS! | Madinah Saudi Arabia Vlog!

There is a lot of confusion as to whether non-muslims can visit Madinah aka Medina in Saudi Arabia, however after researching I found that Non-Muslims can visit, so I took the bus from Jeddah to Madinah on my own as a solo British female traveller to see what Madinah was like as I had always felt very drawn to this city.

I spent my first evening in Madinah walking around Al-Haram / Al-Masjid An Nabawi and the nearby streets and shops. What I really loved about Madinah on first impressions is how well it is catered to for tourists, which totally makes sense however because no where else in Saudi is like this (except Mecca maybe), I liked this sense of ease and the fact that I was not the only tourist there!

I love@ObaydFox 's Madinah video which you can watch here:

Non-Muslims Can Visit Medina Now (And So Tried It Myself) - المدينة المنورة

This one is personal for me.
Long ago, I would go through Google Maps and watch pictures of places surrounding the Prophet's Mosque in Medina and imagined what it would be like to be there.
You know me, I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to history and society, so visiting one of the two holiest places in Islam was all the way up there in my bucket list.
But I coudln't. Saudi Arabia didn't hand out tourist visas and Medina was off-limits to non-muslims.
And then I read somewhere this was not the case anymore and I realized I had to give it a try. Is it really possible?
Let's find out. We will drive all the way from Al-Ula to Medina, walk the city a see how far to the city center we can get.
Spots like Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) and the world's olderst mosque of Al-Quba are waiting.

We visited the Prophet´s Mosque, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, Saudi Arabia as Non-Muslim tourists. What an amazing experience to witness this holiest of places in the Islamic world. Until recently it was forbidden (Haram) for non-Muslims to visit the Prophet´s mosque in Medina. We felt so privileged as foreign tourists to be able to see this sacred place for ourselves and to see how important it is for so many pilgrims from around the world.
We also visit the holy Quba Mosque, explore parts of Medina and taste delicious Arabic food.

Non-Muslim In MEDINA ????They Don’t Want To Rent Me A Room!

Day 339-340. 83km (71837kms)

The ride into Medina continued to be a lovely one through greenish hills. Coasting around a descent I was surprised to find another bike-tourer heading the opposite way! Stopping for a chat I learned he is a fellow Brit taking roughly the same route as me, in reverse, but with the addition of Kuwait to the itinerary. After exchanging notes on respective routes, and intel on Medina, Tieran continued uphill into the wind as I resumed my descent into the holy city.

Unsure about how much Medina I would get to experience I stopped tentatively at a miqat or pilgrim station. I was allowed entry and discovered hundreds of people preparing themselves for pilgrimage. Huge toilet and shower blocks allowed folk to wash and change into the prescribed pilgrimage clothing which for men is two pieces of white unstitched cotton. There isn’t a specific dress code for women but many were in very fancy white garments, with a football scarf or similar with which to identify other members of their group in the crowd.

Continuing on into the city I discovered a centre of big new hotels surrounding the huge Prophet’s mosque. I knew the cheaper accommodation to be in the north of town so started there but quickly discovered an unwillingness to rent a room to a solo non-Muslim woman. I tried in the the posh hotels but found only 3 or 5 bedroom suites available. In one I overheard a porter referring to me as ‘kafir’ - non believer - to the embarrassment of his companion.

Back amongst the cheaper hotels I managed, with help, to find a kind Pakistani hotelier who would accept me. Thanks to Jaime Lee and Katja’s Paypal support I’m able to stay two nights in a teeny tiny room, with fabulous views of central Medina from the rooftop.

Dressing conservatively I explored the area surrounding the mosque which remains off limits to me. Half a dozen times a day the call to prayer produces waves of thousands of pilgrims to and fro at one of only a couple of mosques worldwide to accommodate a million worshippers. In general when people asked if I was Muslim I received no ill-will when I replied in the negative. While signs welcomed ‘esteemed guests and worshippers’ I loitered at the entrance to the women’s section to see if I would be invited inside but understandably was not. In any case I count myself very lucky to have been able to experience at least to some degree this massive human spectacle.

Can You Visit Medina as a Non-Muslim?

I was fairly nervous about my recent trip to Medina especially because it is the site of the second holiest mosque in Islam. I managed to find a hotel that was on the very edge of the Haram square with an amazing view of the mosque.

#medina #haram #haramsquare #medinamosque #sauditourism

This was a weekend trip that also included visiting Jeddah and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. I used the brand new Haramain High Speed Railway that connects Medina all the way to Mecca. The train service can travel at up to speeds of 300 mph cutting our journey time to just 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Should Non-Muslims Go To Madinah? How Visiting Madinah Helped Me Become Muslim!

After I visited Madinah in February 2020 and posted a vlog from it, a lot of people asked how I was able to visit Madinah, was I really allowed there as a non-Muslim and there were many comments saying I should not have visited.

In this video I explain can non-Muslims visit Madinah, how non-Muslims visit Madinah, because it's not like Mecca in this way, and my opinion on whether non-Muslims should visit.
As you will know if you have seen my other videos on becoming a revert Muslim from the UK, Madinah played a big part in my journey and if I hadn't have gone I don't think I would have understood and accepted Islam.
Also, will Madinah become the next big tourist hotspot for non-Muslims?? I don't think so and I explain why due to what tourism in Saudi Arabia is like.

One Year Ago in Madinah & Becoming Muslim 6 Months Later. Memories from my time in Medina.

One year ago I was travelling around Saudi Arabia and I felt really pulled to visit Medina after Jeddah, I knew that non-Muslims couldn’t visit Mecca but I read that non-Muslims can visit Madinah so I went.

I had an amazing 2 days there and it totally changed my life as afterwards I started looking into Islam and 6 months later I did my shahada alhamdulillah.

Here are my memories from being there and I hope that it brings back memories for you if you’ve been or shows you how amazing it is if you haven’t and you will go one day soon inshallah.

Was I Wrong To Visit MEDINA? ☪️

Day 341. 94km (71931kms 6yrs)

My budget hotel room - while having the best views in Medina - did not have wifi so I took myself and Gibbo back to the edge of the central zone for a Starbucks. I’d dressed conservatively yesterday, not in an attempt to disguise myself as Muslim, but just as in Ta’if, as an act of respect. I didn’t therefor want to cycle right into the centre and draw unnecessary attention to myself.

On the way out of town at stopped by another important mosque with two directions of prayer. The story goes that mid sermon Mohammed changed direction of prayer from Jerusalem to Mecca instigating the practice that exists to this day. Once again I couldn’t go in but encountered no problem in being non-Muslim (an inquisitive but kind man here asked if I was a man or woman ????) A little further on I passed a sign marking the edge of the ‘haram’ area making me question the morality of my being in Medina, but I’m hoping the sign dates from the recent time when the city was entirely off limits to non-Muslims.

A little further in two men stopped their car to give me water, and later a date farmer invited me for dates and coffee which he produced from a flask in his car.

A very powerful tailwind and slight decline meant I covered my normal distance despite not leaving until the afternoon. Towards sunset I rejected a couple of roadside mosques hoping to find a cooked dinner at a nearby service station. Regrettably the servo was a small one with no activity save for a little shop, but the mosque was unlocked. Half tiled half carpeted it allowed me room to check my front wheel which had been seemed quite off centre. It seems hitting one of the many brutal traffic calming bumps had shifted the wheel slightly off centre. Resetting the wheel corrected most of the wobble but there is still some play which I put down to the bearings having gone in the Dynamo hub. Something else to add to the growing list of equipment to be shipped to the UK and brought to me in Jordan.
