Hydrogen Bomb vs. Atomic Bomb: What’s The Difference?

x

Why is a Hydrogen bomb more powerful than an #AtomBomb?

#shorts #shortsvideo #shortsfeed

Hydrogen bombs, also known as thermonuclear bombs, are significantly more powerful than atomic bombs, also known as fission bombs, due to the fundamental difference in their energy-producing mechanisms.

Atomic bombs harness the energy released from nuclear fission, a process that splits the heavy nucleus of an atom into lighter nuclei. This splitting releases a tremendous amount of energy, but the amount of energy released per unit of mass is relatively small compared to nuclear fusion.

Hydrogen bombs, on the other hand, utilize nuclear fusion, which is the process of combining two or more light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus. This fusion process releases even more energy than fission, resulting in a much more powerful explosion.

To illustrate the difference in power, consider that the first atomic bomb, Little Boy, dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, had an explosive yield equivalent to about 15 kilotons of TNT. In contrast, the first hydrogen bomb, Castle Bravo, tested by the United States in 1954, had an explosive yield of 15 megatons of TNT, over 1,000 times more powerful than the first atomic bomb.

The reason for the vast difference in power lies in the binding energy of nuclei. The binding energy is the energy that holds the nucleus together, and it increases as the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus increases. When light nuclei fuse to form a heavier nucleus, some of the binding energy is released as energy. This released energy is what powers the thermonuclear explosion in a hydrogen bomb.

In summary, hydrogen bombs are more powerful than atomic bombs because nuclear fusion releases significantly more energy per unit of mass than nuclear fission. This difference in energy production results in explosions that are thousands of times more powerful.

73. Deng Jiaxian, the Father of China's A- and H- Bombs

Nuclear physicist Deng Jiaxian was the first to be ordered to the experimental base. Leaving behind a family photograph at his home, he simply vanished. That year, he was just 34. On the night he said goodbye to his wife, he told her: I’m dedicating myself to a job I have to do. This will be the event that will give my life meaning.

It was August 1958, when Deng Jiaxian arrived at the experimental base in the Gobi Desert. He’d set out from home, without leaving a mailing address. His wife spent the following years not knowing where he was or what he was doing.

In a secret room, using just slide rules, Deng and his team ran repeated calculations on the key data for the atomic bomb detonation. In this way, they worked out the theoretical design.

However, Deng suffered an accident that would cause severe damage to his health. During an experiment, he neglected to wear protective gear. Several years later, his condition became terminal.

In June 1986, the hospital where Deng was being cared for, reported that he was on the point of dying. Out of respect, the Central Military Commission declassified the reports on his work. The country’s major newspapers carried his story on their front pages, under headlines that described him as the “Father of China’s A- and H-bombs”. This was how his silent contribution lasting 28 years was honoured.

Hiroshima, Japan-First Atomic Bomb (With Historical Facts)

Hiroshima was the site of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, during World War II. Over 140,000 people were killed. I visited the A-Bomb Dome building which was the only building in that area to survive the explosion.

Underwater atomic bomb test, 1946

Stunishing and rare clip of the first underwater atomic explosion conducted in Bikini Atoll lagoon, on July 25, 1946, by the U.S military.
Notice the massive power of these (at the time) new weapons of destruction, detonated at a depth of 27 meters.

An underwater atomic blast that contaminated the surrounding test ships making them “radioactive stoves”. This test was later on called 'Baker test'.

This test was the most dangerous by contaminating nearby test ships with radioactive mist which has burned all living things aboard with invisible and painless but deadly radiation.

Hiroshima was hit by an atomic bomb in August 1945. Today, you can visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Park and Museum to learn more about this horrendous event which affected thousands of people.

Another way of learning more and discovering information not available in museums is to speak to Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Survivors, another fascinating addition to your list of Things to Do in Hiroshima.

Visit Social Book Cafe in Hiroshima on the 6th of each month to speak to survivors of the Atomic Bomb. In this video, I talk about the story of Takaaki Morikawa, who was just 6 years old at the time of the Hiroshima bomb. He provided fascinating and intreresting information relating to his experience during and after the atomic bomb.

Please note that I chose not to film the actual meeting for this video as I didn't feel comfortable; ie I didn't feel it would be respectful. Why not visit Social Book Cafe in Hiroshima to hear Takaaki's amazing and unimaginable story for yourselves!

Kiriaki: Atomic bomb survivor

Chieko Kiriaki was 15 years old when an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. This is a short excerpt of her story from that day. For an event that occurred over 70 years ago, her memory is fresh. She tells the story in a very matter of fact manner, yet stirring strong images in the mind of the listener. It was an honour to interview her.
