Digging a Pile of Megalodon Teeth

We never know what we are going to find when we go digging for megalodon teeth. Sometimes we come home with nothing. Sometimes we only find broken stuff. But on rare occasions, we have a day like today when we are finding big shark teeth left and right and they are all in decent shape. The layer where we find megs is not consistent because everything was shuffled around and deposited by flowing water. Just a few feet can make all the difference between a nothing day and a bag filler. We were on a hot layer band today and it was stuffed with goodies. The megalodon teeth were almost in a pile! I'll let the video do the talking today because it was a GREAT day digging.

Venice Beach the Shark Tooth Capital of the World | Shark Tooth Hunting | Finding Sand dollars

December 8th, 2021 we spent the morning at the Venice Fishing Pier hunting for shark teeth with our handy dandy shark sifters which I made last spring for our trip to Wilmington, North Carolina (to watch those videos, click the links below). We had heard that the beaches south of the Venice Jetty were ideal for shark tooth hunting and that Venice was known as The Shark Tooth Capital of the World; so we had to see for ourselves with hopes of finding a megalodon tooth. Lucky for us the water was extremely calm which made it ideal for shark tooth hunting. We also found a few other fossilized finds during this adventure.

Megalodon Shark Tooth Diving to Beat the Summer Heat

Summer in the south is hot and there's no better way to beat the heat than prehistoric shark tooth diving and that's exactly what Diva and me have been doing. There is a few minutes of near heat-stroke suffering while we gear up and the sun beats down on us as we struggle to stuff our sweaty selves into wetsuits, but all that ends the second we hit the water. We slowly swim down the sand banks into the dark depths and forget about the world above to concentrate on the pleasure at hand - finding giant shark teeth that litter the bottom. The currents have eroded them from the geologic formations that originally contained them, and they lie in the algae and muck covered river floor, perilously exposed to the natural rock tumbler. The fast flowing currents constantly shuffle around the bottom, eventually grinding everything to nothing so it is our task to save the fossils before that fate befalls them. We climb over piles of fallen trees, swim down into dark holes not knowing what is below. Its usually a big catfish, but sometimes its a snake and its possible that it could be an alligator. We have to push that to the back of our minds, we are not gator food but this is their habitat so it pays to be mindful. But seriously if they wanted us we would never know until it was too late. It brings me peace to know that I am gamey and foul tasting, gorging steadily with Taco Bell and ice cream. No self respecting alligator would stuff itself with junk food when there are non-GMO bass and organic catfish readily available. And there's no way a scuba tank is easily swallowed - unless you're a megalodon that is, and that's what I get my mind back to. Megalodon teeth, giant awesome fossils of the greatest predator that ever lived. That's the prize and I actually found some on this dive! There not as big as some I have dug recently, but all I had to do was swim and pick these up so its hard to beat that kind of convenience. I also found an ice age horse tooth, some mako, sand tiger, modern tiger, and even some angustidens teeth, which is a shark much older than megalodon, the evoluationary grandfather of the meg. Angustidens get big too with teeth reaching 5 inches, and diving is where its at to find those, though neither of us found one that big on this dive. It was super fun but it doesn't take long to breathe a whole tank and before we knew it, it was time to surface, lest we run out of air and prematurely begin our own process of fossilization.

Hurricane Ian Exposes Incredible Prehistoric Shark Teeth in Summerville SC

Hurricane Ian blew through Summerville last week. Thankfully we were spared the devastation Ian dealt to our friends Florida - Our thoughts are with everyone there and we can't wait to see the spectacular finds of Sunshine state collectors! Folks here in South Carolina took this storm seriously and everything shut down so we were just sitting in the house in the dark with nothing to do, listening to the wind howl and the rain pelt the windows. Of course our thoughts drifted towards hunting shark teeth - after all, nothing is better than hurricane rain for eroding out prehistoric goodies. It didn't take long to make up our minds and we quickly gathered up our rain gear and headed out the door. The roads were deserted. During a hurricane is the only time without traffic jams so the drive was actually nice, despite all the traffic lights being out. Oh wait, that was nice too. We arrived at the spot and saw other collectors already there. Not a surprise! We got a lot of rain in just a short time so everyone was thinking the same thing as us. It normally would bum us out not to get there first, but it was raining so hard that it took only minutes to erase footprints. There were rivers of water where it was bone dry just hours before. The wind was driving the rain so hard it stung our faces. Umbrellas were useless so we just trekked through the flood and the mud hoping to see a blade, some serrations, maybe a root. It was actually hard to walk against the wind but we pressed onward, picking up teeth along the way. I would write about what we found, but the simple fact that I posted a video says it was worth the time to collect and to make a video, so sit back and enjoy the show as we brave the elements and resist nature to bring you our latest shark tooth hunting adventures!

Fossil Hunting at Thousand Trails Peace River RV Campground Searching for Megalodon Shark Teeth

Our family loves the adventure of hunting for treasure! This video shows how we got to explore for fossilized treasures in the Peace River. Peace River runs from central Florida all the way to the Charlotte Harbor and is known to contain all kinds of amazing fossils, both large and small. While there are tons of various size sharks’ teeth to be found, you also have a decent chance to find a large Megalodon Tooth! Additionally, you can find, artifacts, ancient turtle shells, and fossilized bones, just to name a few. Our family collectively found lots of cool teeth, bones, and more!

The campground we stayed at is called Peace River RV & Campground, which is part of Thousand Trails. It’s located near Wauchula, Florida in Hardee County. Peace River runs along the Campground and there are nice walking/bicycle trails along the river, allowing the opportunity to see plenty of nature and wildlife. There are also places for easy access into the river. The Campground even rents out screen boxes used for shifting through sand in your search of teeth and fossils!

Have you ever been able to search for fossils in Peace River? Were you able to find a Megalodon Tooth or something really cool? We’d love to hear about it. Thanks for watching our videos and following along our RV journeys! If this is your first time watching, we’d love for you to subscribe to our channel and be a part of our RV adventures!

Finding Amazing Fossils at the Peace River, Florida

For two days, we searched for fossils in the Peace River, where Pleistocene ice age land fossils mix with much older shark teeth and other marine fossils. We were careful to be alert for the many alligators in this river. Turns out, we found a few uncommon fossils.
