Humayun's Tomb

Humayun was sandwiched between the ambitious Babur and the visionary Akbar. Add avaricious brothers and defiant governors into the mix, and you have a king caught in a bad place. He struggled, but managed to hold on tenaciously to his kingdom. And when he died, his son, Akbar built a tomb befitting of an emperor for him.

Humayun’s tomb stands in all its majestic glory in the heart of Delhi, ensconced in its own lush gardens, one of the earliest mausoleums to be built this way. It has inspired many later buildings, including the Taj Mahal. Who else is buried in this tomb complex? Just how did the insides look when it was first built? And what happened to this imposing monument when the Mughals lost power?

Join us on the Storytrails podcast, and listen as Ms Swapna Liddle takes us through this glorious monument called Humayun’s tomb.

हुमायूँ का मक़बरा का रहस्य | Strange History of Humayun's Tomb | Humayun Ka Maqbara New Delhi

Humayun's Tomb building complex is a tomb monument inspired by Mughal architecture . It is located near Mathura Road in Nizamuddin East area near Dinapnah i.e. Old Fort of New Delhi . During the Ghulam dynasty , this land used to be in Kilokari Fort and used to be the capital of the then Sultan Kekubad , son of Nasiruddin ( 1268-1287 ). The main building here is the tomb of the Mughal emperor Humayun and it houses the tombs of many other royal figures including Humayun's tomb. This group is declared World Heritage  India , andIt is the first example of Mughal architecture inThis mausoleum follows the same Charbagh style , which later gave rise to the Taj Mahal . This mausoleum was built in 1562 on the orders of Humayun 's widow Begum Hamida Banu Begum . The architects of this building were Syed Mubarak ibn Mirak Ghiyathuddin and his father Mirak Ghiyathuddin, who were specially called from the city of Herat in Afghanistan . The main building was completed in about eight years and became the first example of the Charbagh style in the Indian subcontinent . Red sandstone was first used here on such a large scale.   In 1993 the building complexwas declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The main building in this complex is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Apart from Humayun's tomb, there are tombs of his Begum Hamida Banu and Dara Shikoh , the eldest son of the later Emperor Shah Jahan and many successor Mughal emperors Jahandar Shah , Farrukhshiyar , Rafi ul-Darjat , Rafi ud-Daulat and Alamgir II etc.  The building marked a major change in Mughal architecture , withBabur 's mausoleum in Kabul was completely different from Bagh-e-Babur . With Babur, the tradition of burying the emperors in the mausoleums built in the garden started. Based on the mausoleum of his ancestor Timur Lang in Samarkand ( Uzbekistan ), the building became the inspiration for the mausoleums of later Mughal architecture in India. This architecture reached its zenith with the Taj Mahal .

Yamuna River was chosen because of its proximity to the Hazrat Nizamuddin (Dargah) . Saint Nizamuddin has been a famous Sufi saint of Delhi and he was highly regarded by the rulers of Delhi . His then residence was also situated in Chilla-Nizamuddin Auliya, near the place of the tomb, in the north-east direction. In later Mughal history, the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar along with three other princes took refuge here during the First Indian War of Independence in 1857 . Later he was arrested by Captain Hodson of the British Army from here and then he was sent to Rangoon . I was imprisoned till death.  Bahadur Shah Zafar related his departure from Delhi in these words:

Two 16 meter high double-storeyed entrances are made in the west and south to enter the huge stone-built building. There are chambers on both sides of these gates and there are small courtyards on the upper floor. A six-pointed star similar to the one on the iwan of the main building adorns the main entrance. The mausoleum is basically constructed by joining the stones with mortar and is covered with red sandstone . White marble for mosaic, floor surface, window grills, door-frames and balconyhas been used. The huge main dome of the mausoleum is also covered with white marble. The mausoleum stands on an 8 meter high original plinth, the upper surface of which is 12000 square meters, surrounded by a red reticulated balustrade. The corners of this square platform have been trimmed to give an octagonal impression. There are 56 cells built in the foundation of this platform, in which more than 100 graves are made. The entire structure stands on a platform a few steps high.

Influenced by Persian architecture , this mausoleum is 47 m. It is high and 300 feet wide. The Persian bulbous dome is built on the building, which was first seen in the tomb of Sikandar Lodi . This dome is built on a 42.5 meter high neck-shaped cylinder. A 6 meter high brass crown urn is installed above the dome and the moon is placed on it, which is found in the tombs of Timur dynasty. The dome is made in double layer, the outer layer is covered with white marble and the inner layer is made in the form of a cave. Apart from the pure and clean white form of the dome, the rest of the building is made of red sandstone, on which mosaic work has been done with white and black marble and yellow sandstone. The combination of these colors gives a different aura to the building

'It takes an entire day's labour to manually chisel a 2x2 ft brick for this monument'

In this episode of Ravish Ki Report, we visit Humayun's tomb and speak to the personnel in charge of renovating the monument. Huge efforts are being made in replenishing the original splendour and design of the building. Artisans having the traditional expertise of constructing such monuments have been brought over from Bharatpur for the purpose. One of the contractors in charge of supervising the activities says that it takes an entire day to manually make a single four square foot brick for the monument. [Audio in Hindi] (This episode was aired in January 2011 and was re-telecast under the NDTV Classics series)

Exploring Humayun’s Tomb After Lockdown || Vlog 2 || Exploring Delhi || Safar Destiny ????????

Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi is the first of the grand dynastic mausoleums that were to become synonyms of Mughal architecture with the architectural style reaching its zenith 80 years later at the later Taj Mahal. Humayun’s Tomb stands within a complex of 27.04 ha. that includes other contemporary, 16th century Mughal garden-tombs such as Nila Gumbad, Isa Khan, Bu Halima, Afsarwala, Barber’s Tomb and the complex where the craftsmen employed for the Building of Humayun’s Tomb stayed, the Arab Serai.

Humayun’s Tomb was built in the 1560’s, with the patronage of Humayun’s son, the great Emperor Akbar. Persian and Indian craftsmen worked together to build the garden-tomb, far grander than any tomb built before in the Islamic world. Humayun’s garden-tomb is an example of the charbagh (a four quadrant garden with the four rivers of Quranic paradise represented), with pools joined by channels. The garden is entered from lofty gateways on the south and from the west with pavilions located in the centre of the eastern and northern walls

Isa Khan Niazi Tomb| Humayun Tomb complex| Delhi Tourist Places #solotraveller

Isa Khan Niazi was born in 1453 and his last brother was born in 1478. He died in Delhi in 1548 at the age of 95. He was in the same tribal unit of nobles as Ibrahim Lodhi, Sher Shah Suri. Most of these families were attached to the Delhi sultanate. Isa Khan's tomb was built during his lifetime (ca 1547-48 AD). It is situated near the site of the Mughal Emperor Humayun's Tomb complex in Delhi which was built later (between 1562-1571 AD). This octagonal tomb has distinct ornamentation in the form of canopies, glazed tiles and lattice screens, and a deep veranda surrounding it, which is supported by pillars. It stands to the south of the Bu Halima garden at the entrance of the complex. An inscription on a red sandstone slab indicates that the tomb is that of Masnad Ali Isa Khan, son of Umar Khan, the Chief chamberlain, and was built during the reign of Islam Shah Suri, son of Sher Shah, in 1547-48 A.D.[1] On 5 August 2011, restoration work on this tomb led to the discovery of India's oldest sunken garden. Isa Khan’s garden tomb is considered the earliest example of an Indian sunken garden attached to a tomb. This concept was later developed at Akbar’s Tomb and at the Taj Mahal.
