Quick Cutter Tool Restoration, Remove Rust & Light Nickel Plating - low cost easy DIY basic restore
I found a rusted cutter in a drawer, one that belonged to my late father long ago. For reasons unknown, it was nearly seized closed & very hard to open or close & very rusty.
I used a variable DC power supply & a sodium bicarbonate in water bath with a copper coated nickel anode, the part attached with copper wire to the cathode, then ran the setup at 12.5vdc for about 30 minutes to remove rust.
I took the tool out several times during the cleaning bath stage to wipe it off with paper towel & sanded it with 100 grit sandpaper to speed along the de-rusting restoration part. This ended up giving the tool a light brushed nickel finish in the end.
After most of the dirt & rust removed, I then ran my acetic acid nickel plating bath, with a nickel anode tree hanging from a copper wire as the anode + (red wire) and the part hanging from a copper wire as the cathode - (black wire).
Running the nickel electroplating at 1.6vdc & 0.16 amps for about 40 minutes put a nice light plating of corrosion protecting nickel onto the steel tool & enough rust was removed that it can now be easily opened & closed with 1 hand!
Its not a mirror finish perfect restoration, it was a light 1.5 hour restore using stuff I had around my garage on the fly, spontaneously for a fun activity on Saturday Morning!
I really like watching tool restoration on YouTube, they start out much more rusted, and the people restoring them have a cull workshop with thousands worth of special tools to machine new parts, lathe up new handles, cut metals, paint, plate, etc.
I have a few mason jars with lids that I use as electroplating & electroprocessing bath containers, using common materials like copper wire, nickel strips, vinegar & baking soda as materials, along with regular water, nothing fancy. I use paper towels to wipe stuff clean, sometimes a baby wipe or hot soapy bath in the sink.
This is something nearly anyone can do at a relatively low cost with light technical skills and some cheap affordable stuff around the house, that many people probably or likely already have around their home!
Adult supervision required. Not for children. Excellent science learning project to do something useful around the farm or home or shop!
Some people are allergic to nickel, so the nickel strips & nickel ion bath can irritate skin. This is being done on a tiny scale, so use wisdom when handling the baths, the electricity, the parts etc.
This is only one of many different ways to remove rust from a rusted tool, but the one that I like because it uses electricity & conductive ion baths made with water and an electrolyte, something to enable current to flow since water itself a poor conductor of electricity. I use acetic acid & baking soda as ion agents in my homemade tiny scale electroplating baths. I don't use salt normally NaCl or sodium chloride can release toxic chlorine gas when solutions of salt are electrolytically decomposed with electrical current flow between two DC electrodes, an anode & cathode respectively.
Restoring a Tool; Removing Rust, Nickel Electroplating, & Lubricating
I found a pair of needle-nose pliers in a plastic drawer that previously belonged to my late father Ken, that were corroded with rust on the steel alloy.
I use a sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in water bath with a nickel strip + anode to - cathode strip rust from the tool
Using an acetic acid + NaCl water bath made with a nickel anode & cathode, I utilized a nickel + anode & attach the part as the - cathode to electroplate the tool with a nice corrosion protection layer of bright nickel
In this video I regenerate the nickel ion levels of the nickel plating bath, and use various voltages & currents to accomplish electroplating the tool with nickel.
I add tri-lub gun-oil to lubricate the friction pivot articulation in this tool & to wipe down the tool & polish it lightly.

How to make a decal (Bigfoot) Bentwood ring tutorial. I made the ring using the standard Bentwood ring method. I applied a decal made of permanent vinyl that I cut out on my Cricut machine to the right size based on the width of the ring I was making. After sanding the ring, I applied the decal and covered it with CA glue. I sanded it using micro mesh and finished with a plastic polish. I have made numerous ring using this method, but everyone always seems to wan the Bigfoot.
